  1. I'm not sure why we live in a world where translators think that just because they've received years of education, training, and practice and lived in parallel cultures for years, that they're qualified to... uh... translate.

  2. This take always makes me facepalm. By this logic nothing should be translated at all, as the voiced lines will always differ from the translation. If you understand the voiced lines, what are you doing reading a translation instead of the original.

  3. I have witnessed the progress of an English speaker transitioning out of referring to themself in the third-person and into the first-person. The toddler in question finished making that change shortly before their third birthday. So if you want to feel like Saya is two years old while you're reading that game, go for it and apply that patch. Meanwhile, any halfway decent translator is going to understand how inaccurate it is to render 3rd-person self-reference in Japanese as 3rd-person self-reference in English.

  4. Don't presume to speak for "the target audience". That's hubris enforced by the echo chamber you live in. Most people do not engage online communities. Only the biggest diehard fans do. A small subset, skewed heavily towards those with strong opinions, is not a representative sample. And your opinion is not even universally shared among the online community.

  5. I never said I could understand the voiced lines, it's just really easy to tell when the Japanese voice is talking in 3rd or 1st person, it's really unnecessary to not translate it exactly as it appears, it's not a faithful translation if the translator doesn't include a characters 3rd or 1st person speaking, sure you don't find that many visual novels that do that but that is no excuse to change it to not include it. Your logic is wrong though, you're just putting words in my mouth which I never said anything close to it.

  6. A character talking in the 3rd person should never be changed in the western release because the voiced lines will still be doing just that which will just make the translator look like an idiot.

    Greetings from Poland

First of all, Hello and thanks for having me. 2) Introduction well... not much to write here. I am finishing up my bachelor degree on university, and also working. I've been around Anime games/VN's for at least 3 years I think. It was quite a journey so far. I am mostly a PC - Steam player, watching VN's growth from there was something to note especially once policy on nudity in games was changed. For better or worse. I am also sometimes reviewing h-games on ATC group. Other than that I have old YT channel with few AMV's. 3) Why am I here? Well just to bring some conversation around I hope. VN's are rather solitary type of games that might be easily spoiled. Neverless they should be somehow promoted and discussed. See you around!

  8. Hey there everyone! As some of you might know, I'm a PhD student in sociology and for a long time I've been doing projects about fan communities and fan productivity of different kinds. This survey is an element of my current one, focused on the history of visual novel fan translation and the ties between the fan translation scene and the development of the professional VN localization market. It's directed to people that participated in FTL projects in various roles, asking them about general details of their involvement and other kinds of localisation/translation work they might've been involved in. If that's you, please consider filling out the survey – it's mostly simple single-choice or multi-choice questions that'll take you very little time to answer. If not, you can help by spreading the message, especially if you know places connected to the fan translation community that I might not know of or have no access to. The survey will be open at least until Sunday 6th – it might be prolonged depending on the number of responses. Here is the link to the survey The results I get will be shared back with the community within a month and a half after closing the survey (it'll take me some time to process it all, as I have a conference I need the data for in the meantime). If you have any questions, please ask them here or contact me directly at [email protected]. I'll do my best to respond ASAP. Thank you for your time!

  11. Yeah. I think seiya-saiga just uses most "efficient" order to 100% the game, so completing the routes in the order they branch off make sense from that POV. If nothing else pops up, for now I'm sticking with Mashiro -> Rika -> Misaki -> Asuka.

  12. I've only managed to find two guides and I imagine it's the same ones you found, where one says the suggested playing order is Rika/Mashiro followed by Asuka/Misaki, and the other one just lists the routes in the order the writer finished them. Confirmation from someone would be nice, but if that doesn't happen, I'm going to assume that the guide that actually mentions a suggested playing order is the one to follow.

  15. I am very poorly experienced in otome sub-genre but one title was quite memorable, cause of it's opening (it basicly bought me with it years ago) Amnesia: Memories It's very, very, cheap on Steam during sales also it's from Otomate. Nothing else comes to my mind. I have titles that you mentioned on my wishlist btw. Hope it helps.

  16. Finally got around to publishing this after letting it sit in the oven for four months. Life happened, I guess. Anyway, instead of doing what I usually do and copy-pasting my article here on fuwa, I thought I'd just leave the link to my blog. Feel free to make use of the comment section below, however, as we're still working on setting up Disqus. I tried to make the article as spoiler-free as possible, so that those who haven't yet played the game can enjoy it nonetheless. https://j-addicts.de/great-ace-attorney-impressions/ This article was written on May 3rd. There's a chance that some of the information might be outdated regarding the fan translation group Scarlet Study. However, this should not affect the content of the article itself. Also, a huge shoutout to @Tyrosyn for working tirelessly on the new website design and making everything look nice, as well as his countless suggestions to improve my work. I'd also like to thank @Zander for giving my article a quick editing pass, that which finally forced me to finally getting around to publish it. Although I call it an impressions article, it grew wild beyond my expectations. With that out of the way, please do enjoy reading my review.
