Overview

Released in 1992, Otogirisou is the first Sound Novel developed by Chunsoft (later known as Spike Chunsoft) for the Super Famicom system. Otogirisou was the next evolution of Japanese Adventure games, having stripped down the Command Menu, Text Parser, and Point-and-Click controls of previous Adventure games, instead limiting its gameplay to simply reading NVL text and making a selection of choices that affects the narrative. With different scenes triggered by your choices, a branching narrative that leads to unique "stories" (what would later be known as Routes), and conclusive Endings for each of these stories, Otogirisou was a pioneer of the genre. It, alongside its follow-up Kamaitachi no Yoru in 1994, would redefine Adventure games into what we call "Visual Novels" here in the west. Needless to say, this game has very important historical significance.

In Otogirisou, your character (canon name: Kouhei) is driving down a forest road in the middle of a stormy night with your girlfriend Nami, when suddenly a series of events causes your car to swerve off the road and be crushed by a falling tree. Seeking shelter, the two of you soon find a western-style mansion surrounded by a garden of hypericum flowers (otogirisou). However, not everything is as it seems within the mansion, as many dangers seem to lurk inside, and a mysterious past can be uncovered within its walls. Was it coincidence that you found yourself in this home, or is there something that has brought the two of you here...?

Please note that the following guide is exclusively for the Super Famicom version of Otogirisou and it is not compatible with the Playstation remake, as that version adds brand new scenes, a new Bad Ending, POV swaps to Nami's perspective, and around 15 new Epilogues. Additionally, this guide is written based off the fantranslation by Translated Games; the text will likely not be a perfect 1:1 match for the other fantranslation by the user ButThouMust.

Route/Ending List, and Unlock Conditions

Otogirisou is a late-branching style of Visual Novel, in which 80% of your run consists of the game's "Common Route" and then splits into 6 different routes, with 10 endings total. Three of these routes are unlocked from the start, meaning you can get 5 out of the 10 available endings. Each of these endings exist within their own independent canon; any backstories or supernatural events you encounter in one ending may not exist in another ending. They are basically parallel universes dictated by your choices, rather than timelines that split off a consistent universe.

Here are the endings of the game (please note these names are not official, some have been taken from JP guides and some I've made up myself):

Spoiler

Available at the start of the game:

  • Burned Route
    • Burning Coffin Ending
    • Burning Basement Ending
    • Delusional Ending
  • Twins' Curse Route
    • Twins' Curse Ending
  • Mother & Father Route
    • Mother & Father Ending

Available after getting at least 1 ending:

  • Fish Monster Route
    • Fish Monster Ending
  • Shadow Route
    • Shadow Ending

Available after getting the Fish Monster Ending (no other specific ending is required to unlock these):

  • Monster Family Route
    • Monster Curse Ending
    • Monster Bloodlines Ending

Available after obtaining the Pink Bookmark (requires getting all 9 previous endings):

  • Monster Family/Lovers' Route
    • Fireflies Ending

As you navigate through the game's Common Route, you will encounter different choices that are either serious in tone or lean into a more comedic nature. The endings/routes for this game run down a scale of content, where the more serious the scenes are, the higher they are on the list above, and the more comedic they are, the lower they are on that list. So for example, the choices that play the story as straight as possible will most likely lead you to the Burned Route, while the choices that have exaggerated jokes will most likely lead to the Monster Family Route.

You're free to get the endings in whichever order you like, as long as they've been unlocked for you. My recommended route order is nearly the same, and it'll be the order in which this guide is organized:

  • Burning Coffin (most serious)
  • Burning Basement
  • Delusional
  • Mother & Father
  • Twins' Curse
  • Fish Monster
  • Shadow
  • Monster Curse
  • Monster Bloodlines
  • Fireflies (most comedic)

Remember, if you're trying to get an ending higher on this list, try to aim for serious choices, and if you are trying to get an ending lower on the list, choose the funnier options available.

In addition to these 10 endings, the game also contains 9 Epilogues that can be obtained after clearing specific endings twice or more. I will cover these Epilogues in greater detail later on.

Lastly, this guide will be separated into 3 types of guides: Flowchart guides which will showcase every choice in the game and where they lead, allowing for maximum freedom, Freeform guides that will mark the choices that specifically lead to routes/endings while still allowing players to freely explore the game, and Individual Ending walkthroughs that will showcase a set of specific choices that lead directly to each ending, restricting freedom for more linear and consistent experiences. For the individual walkthroughs, the choices I will list out will allow the player to obtain every single scene in the game in just 10 playthroughs of the game, one for each ending, and will be optimized so that each of the scenes in the Common Route for that playthrough will correspond to the appropriate ending you are aiming for. For example, if a specific ending does not contain any supernatural elements whatsoever, then the walkthrough to that ending will avoid any scenes in the Common Route that contain supernatural encounters to remain canonically consistent with that specific ending.

Flowcharts

Here are flowchart images containing every choice and ending in the game. There are 4 different charts, each one representing a different "phase" of the game in which more content is unlocked. The first image is the beginning of the game where everything is locked, while the last image is once you've obtained the "Pink Bookmark" and unlocked everything available to you.

Route Guide (Freeform)

If the flowcharts appear confusing or daunting for you, but you still want to explore the game with full freedom, the route guides are the ones for you.

Burned Route

The Burned Route is unique to the other routes in this game as it splits off the Common Route much earlier than the others. This guide will tell you what choices lead to the Burned Route, and which choices can lock you out of the route:

Spoiler

Eventually your character will encounter a ringing telephone within the mansion. There are 10 versions of this scene, and 8 of these versions have choices that can lead you to the start of the Burned Route (the other 2 versions are not available at the start of the game). The choices that will take you to the start of the Burned Route are:

  • A. "We have to find where they're hiding!"
  • B. Nami and I looked at each other.
  • A/C. "Guess I'll stick with you to the end." That's what I said, as I stood up.
  • C. "It's a poltergeist." I said, with a shudder. —> B. "There's nothing to worry about." I left it at that.
  • B. "Nami, come with me." I told her directly. —> B. "There's nothing to worry about." I left it at that.
  • A. "I knew it! Somebody must be here!" —> B. "There's nothing to worry about." I left it at that.
  • A. "Alright, let's go check it out!" I pulled Nami along by the hand. —> B/C. I got worried about Nami, and I turned to look at her.
  • B. "Probably not a mouse." —> B/C. I got worried about Nami, and I turned to look at her.
  • C. "Let's start from here, already." I impatiently opened the closest door. —> B/C. I got worried about Nami, and I turned to look at her.
  • C. "As the saying goes, one must do one good deed a day." —> B/C. I got worried about Nami, and I turned to look at her.
  • C. I wondered what happened to that motorcycle afterwards. —> B/C. I got worried about Nami, and I turned to look at her.

If you miss any of those choices once you encounter them, you will have several opportunities to enter the Burned Route through "alternate entrances". The choices that lead to these alternate entrances are:

  • B. "Don't say that! Please make it for me now!"
  • B/C. Now that I think about it, dried fish are kinda like fish mummies.
  • B. I felt like taking a nice, leisurely bath.
  • B. "You can find a shower yourself! I'll go along with you."
  • C. "That cat needs to get its claws trimmed."
  • C. "Don't fall, Nami!" I tried to pull her out of the hell she was falling into.
  • C. "I'd go without breakfast for three whole days without a single complaint!"

Once you're inside the Burned Route, you can also accidentally exit out of it by making the wrong choices. Most of these are not available on the first playthrough, but either way, the choices that will take you back into the Common Route are as follows:

  • C. "I think this is the shower here…" I opened the door.
  • B. "There have got to be as many medicines as there are illnesses." I said, but I was more interested in whether or not we'd be able to use the shower.
  • C. "Maybe we should just leave?"
  • D. She's probably just tired, huh?
  • C. I couldn't keep this up. I thought I should just say whatever was needed to move on.

And lastly, once you've found either a photograph or a pair of maternity diaries, you will be presented with 3 choices that will determine which ending you will get. These choices are:

  • A. I ran to the hallway over to the door that had shut. —> Burned Coffin Ending
  • B. I hurried to the piano hall. —> Burned Basement Ending
  • C. I followed the wet footprints. —> Delusional Ending

Rest of the Routes

The rest of the routes are reached at the end of Common Route, once you reach a scene where you either find a photograph or a pair of diaries. The following are the choices immediately after these scenes that lead directly to the routes in question:

  • A. I was perfectly fine with Nami being a monster, actually. —> A. I figured if I didn't have enough blood, for her, I could try watering it down with tomato juice. OR C. I wondered if my blood type was compatible with her.
  • C. This could be a good chance for me to propose to her. —> A. I figured if I didn't have enough blood, for her, I could try watering it down with tomato juice. OR C. I wondered if my blood type was compatible with her.

  • C. I changed into my swimsuit as I chased after Nami.

In order to reach the Firefly Ending, please follow the walkthrough for that specific ending down below, as the path laid out down there follows a continuous storyline for that ending.

Navigating the Monster Family Route

Once you obtain the Pink Bookmark (gained by clearing the first 9 endings), new choices are unlocked throughout the game, and especially within the Monster Family Route, allowing access to the Fireflies Ending. As such, navigating the Monster Family Route can cause trouble and lead you to the wrong ending. I will list out the best way to keep track of how to avoid getting forced into a specific ending.

Spoiler

Starting off, the following choices are secret options that will take you away from the Monster Family Route into a completely different route without rhyme or reason:

  • B. "Even if your family's a bunch of monsters, Nami... I'm okay with that." —> Shadow Route
  • D. I threw it into the fireplace, where it made a horrible stench. —> Monster & Father Route
  • B. "Who cares about that old lady? I can turn into an old man myself, you know!" I chased after Nami, who had fled. —> Monster & Father Route
  • D. I shouted and tried to use it to light up a barbecue. —> Twins' Curse Route
  • D. "Neither seek nor shun the firefighter!" I said as I chased after Nami, who had run into another room. —> Monster & Father Route
  • D. I just walked forward without any particular destination in mind. —> Burned Route (just prior to the ending choice)
  • D. I had no idea what to do. —> Shadow Route
  • C. I thought about where Nami might have gone. —> Fish Monster Route

The following choices will force you into the Monster Curse path, which will prevent you from reaching the Fireflies ending:

  • A. I decided to go up the stairs.
  • A. The love I felt for Nami made it clear to me exactly where she was.
  • B/E. I could feel Nami sending wavelengths of love my way.
  • B. I felt like I was getting caught up in Nami's delusions now too.
  • C. "You're joking, right Nami?" I laughed.
  • B. For some reason, I suddenly lost the strength to argue with her.
  • B. "Nami, ditch these creeps!"
  • C. I quietly closed my eyes. "I understand."
  • C. This is awesome! You should come join me, Naomi!" Might as well take her down too.

The following choices will force you into the Lovers' Path, which will lead directly into the Fireflies Ending and prevent you from getting the Monster Curse or Monster Bloodlines Endings:

  • D. "I'll show you just how much I love you, Nami!"
  • A. I smacked away at it while trying to protect Nami.
  • B. I felt Nami clinging to me.
  • A. When I came to, Naomi was gone, and I was standing there, holding hands with Nami.
  • B. I was blown away by the wind, and when I came to, Nami and I had both been knocked to the ground.
  • D. I fought back and held her down too. "You're coming with me, Nami!"
  • D. "Nami, we're doing this, together." I held onto her, tightly.
  • C. I grabbed Nami and forced her to lie next to me. "Come on over here! It's pretty comfortable!"

And at the end of the Route, depending on which path you're on, the following choices will appear while attempting to escape the fire:

  • A. I grabbed Nami's hands as we went flying. —> Monster Curse Ending
  • B. I hugged Nami close to me. —> Monster Bloodlines Ending
  • B/C. Nami and I were unable to move at all. —> Monster Curse Ending
  • A. "We'll be fine! We can make it through this fire!" —> Monster Bloodlines Ending
  • B. "Then which way should we go? I'll go wherever you tell me!" —> Monster Curse Ending
  • B/C. "Trust me! I can handle this!" —> Monster Bloodlines Ending
  • D. "Hold on! I'm gonna run for it!" —> Fireflies Ending
  • A. "This way! Go!" I had Nami take the lead. —> Monster Bloodlines Ending
  • B. "That's it! Run!" I shouted. —> Monster Curse Ending
  • B/C. "I love you, Nami! Now come on!" I pulled her arm and ran for it. —> Monster Bloodlines Ending
  • D. "It's okay, Nami. As long as I'm with you, I'm okay with dying." I gave Nami a gentle hug. —> Fireflies Ending

Obtaining the Epilogues

If you get any ending on the Monster Family Route a second time, you will unlock an Epilogue that extend the story for slightly longer. If you get these Epilogues a second time, some of them will extend even further into a second Epilogue. You can even get up to 5 Epilogues stacked back-to-back after clearing the Fireflies Ending 5 times. Each of these Epilogues requires an entire new run of the game, as the game forces you to autosave with your progress and you are unable to use older saves to reach certain endings faster.

Despite what some online sources might say, you DO NOT need to obtain the Pink Bookmark to get these Epilogues (at least the ones not exclusive to the Fireflies Ending). All you need is to reach a Monster Family ending a 2nd time or more, no matter your current progress.

The 9 Epilogues available are as follows:

Spoiler
  • Vampire Bite Epilogue
  • Vampire Bats Epilogue
  • Dr. Einstein Epilogue 1
  • Happy Epilogue
  • Frankenstein's Monster Epilogue
  • Bouquet of Flowers Epilogue
  • Dr. Einstein Epilogue 2
  • Invisible Man Epilogue
  • True Epilogue

Here is as best a guide as I can provide for each Epilogue:

Spoiler

When reaching the Monster Curse Ending a second time, the following choices appear:

  • A. I hugged Nami as tightly as I could. —> Dr. Einstein Epilogue 1
  • B. I stared hard at Nami. —> Dr. Einstein Epilogue 1
  • C. I told Nami it was time to leave. —> Vampire Bite Epilogue

When reaching the Monster Bloodlines Ending a second time, the following choices appear:

  • A. "I love you, Nami!" I made my feelings clear for her, one more time. —> Dr. Einstein Epilogue 1
  • B. "Nami… There's something I want to ask you." I was thinking of asking her to marry me. —> Vampire Bite Epilogue
  • C. "D'heh heh… It's just the two of us now." I was feeling like my old self again. —> Vampire Bite Epilogue

When reaching the Fireflies Ending a second time, the following choices appear:

  • A. I wiped away Nami's tears. —> Bouquet of Flowers Epilogue
  • B. I held Nami, thinking I didn't want to marry her with a family like that. —> Dr. Einstein Epilogue 1

When reaching the Vampire Bite Epilogue a second time, the following choices appear:

  • A. "Yes… Now I've become a member of the Dracula family too!" My head still in a daze, I thought maybe we could suck each other's blood, just giving it to each other, back and forth. —> Dr. Einstein Epilogue 1
  • B. "Oh, why did Nami have to belong to the Dracula family, of all things?" As the warmth gradually returned to my head, that was all I could think about. —> Vampire Bats Epilogue

When reaching Dr. Einstein Epilogue 1 a second time, the following choices appear:

  • A. I felt like we'd be happy, from the bottom of my heart. —> Happy Epilogue
  • B. I felt like something bad was about to happen. —> Frankenstein's Monster Epilogue

When reaching the Bouquet of Flowers Epilogue a second time, it automatically continues into Dr. Einstein Epilogue 2.

When reaching Dr. Einstein Epilogue 2 a second time, the following choices appear:

  • A. I felt truly blessed, from the bottom of my heart. —> Invisible Man Epilogue
  • B. I was twisting around with pleasure from the inside out. —> Frankenstein's Monster Epilogue

When reaching the Invisible Man Epilogue a second time, it automatically continues into the True Epilogue, which acts as the game's final True Ending. This means that, in order to get the game's True Ending, the player must reach the Fireflies Ending 5 times, then go through the Bouquet of Flowers Epilogue, Dr. Einstein Epilogue 2, the Invisible Man Epilogue, and finally the True Epilogue.

Individual Ending walkthroughs

Start(s) of the Game

Before starting the game, it is important to understand that the opening scene of the game is randomized every time you start a new run. You can tell which version of the opening you're reading based on what activity you and Nami were doing before the scene starts: you were either playing tennis, you were fishing at a river, or you were playing in the river itself (this one is only available on a 2nd run onward). Your first choice dictates which of the following 5 scenes you will trigger, based on what Nami tells you:

Spoiler

For Nami to say "I noticed them earlier", select the following:

  • A. "Are you sleeping, Nami?" I called out to her gently.
  • B. I shivered, like I'd just had a premonition of something sinister.
  • B. "Your cheeks are blushed, Nami. You look drunk. That's why I looked over."

For Nami to say "Oooh, I'm all ears!", select the following:

  • B. "Wake up, Nami!" I shook her shoulder.
  • A. I thought about how cute Nami was.

For Nami to say "You know everything, don't you, [Name]?", select the following:

  • C. "Na-…" I didn't finish saying her name. I swallowed my tounge, thinking I'd let her sleep a little while longer.
  • A. "Heh heh… You're just so eye-catching that I couldn't help myself!"

For Nami to say "You know all about weird-looking flowers", select the following:

  • C. I felt like something interesting was about to happen.
  • C. "Well, forget peeking, then. I'll just have myself a nice, long stare!"

For Nami to say "It's just the two of us out here, huh?", select the following:

  • D. I took a look at Nami's miniskirt.
  • D. "I was thinking of giving you a kiss."

For most of the ending walkthroughs, I will dictate which of these 5 scenes you should start with, so that you can follow the string of choices necessary for each ending without issue.
