Random Translation: Pantheon

Excerpt from the prologue of the abortive smartphone game, Dies Irae: Pantheon.

Kouha's intro

Spoiler

Is it fortunate or unfortunate to live for a purpose?

I don't know the answer to that, but I can say this.

My life belongs to me.  I will decide my purpose in life and I refuse to follow the rails someone else put down for my life.

After all, they were the same way.  The six eras, the six worlds I observed were all different from one another, but the pride that lay at their core was always the same.

'I think, therefore I am.'  They cried out 'This is how I am!'  'This is who I am!' with all their power.

They found their own way of living, followed it to the end, and bet their lives on it.

That is what it is to be human, and that is the world.  It is the kaleidoscope of creation created from the colors drawn by all.

People have a history and drama.  Regardless of status or caste, everyone is the protagonist of their own life...

... and so I think I want and think I should be the same.

As I sit here looking eternally upon the drama of others existences, I began to consider my own life.

I wanted to be a protagonist I could be proud of.

For the sake of what is to come, I think I will look back on what has come before.

 The First Era: 1:29-3:32

Spoiler

The first era was a tragedy.  At the time, I'd just been born and didn't really understand anything, but I now understand it was amongst the worst of the eras.

First, too many people died.  Two opposing factions warred against each other without end for tens of thousands of years.

The slaughter of black and white carried out on a universal scale.

I call this the Era of Good vs Evil, but of course, there is no real meaning to that phrase.

It was an era where scholarly definitions of good and evil had no place.  Two groups with irreconcilable mentalities called themselves Good and Evil, so I decided to call this era that as well.

However, as a trend, those who called themselves Good were rough and dangerous.  Their appearance was filthy and tattered, and their spirits were full of hatred and malice.

They destroyed both their enemies and themselves, and they left only curses behind.  Compared to Good, those who represented Evil were beautiful and magnificent.

Bright and beautiful men and women smiled elegantly while acting however they wished.  Whether they massacred hundreds of millions or created a monster out of a star that ate other stars, they were completely devoid of malice.

While being called by terrifying titles like 'Workshop of Ruin' or 'Murder Princess', the seven Demon Lords who ruled over Evil were elegant and flashy from beginning to end.

It was a world and a Law where villains smiled often and those on the side of justice were constantly driven to anger.

Now I can understand that this was a deliberately cruel irony, so I've chosen to call this world terrible.

Muzan's Rise (Avesta) 3:33-6:41

Spoiler

From the moment I was born, I was an emotionless and irresponsible audience.

I looked down upon the world, mindlessly watching others' dramas from above.

I can't forget the first time I felt someone on the stage move me.

I don't want to call him a teacher, but he was horrifyingly strong.

Muzan "Die!  Die!  Who said you were allowed to breathe?!'

He was a part of the group that called itself Good in the First Era.  However, even amongst them, he was different.

His bloodlust was incomparable.  His wrath was greater.  His malice was more immense.  The sheer amount of curses he bore was on a different scale.

Those on the side of Good were universally destructive, but even amongst them he stood out.

No, perhaps it can be said that he possessed nothing else other than hatred.

And he continued to fight with only hatred as his weapon.

There were many on both sides who were stronger than him, but he always ran straight into the worst of conflicts on his own.

'He's an idiot.  He's crazy.  There's something wrong with him.'

My first emotion was exasperation and contempt directed at him, but that was soon overwritten with utter shock.

'Where is Evil?  Where are the scum?  I will slaughter them all!'

He didn't die, he didn't lose.  No matter how terrible the situation, he survived... and killed.

He twisted reality and surpassed human understanding... and he walked a path of darkness and death that climbed the stairs to the realm of the divine with only a sword in hand.

Even if you looked through all six eras, no one fought or killed as much as he did.

He was punched, gouged and sliced open while he punched, gouged and sliced open others.

No others can compare to the amount of blood he lost and the blood he bathed in.

Despite the fact that he looked into the eyes of other and listened to their final screams as he destroyed a universe...

'I am not Good?  Very well, then I shall become the Evil that Devours Evil.'

He was the Shameless and Soulless, devoid of shame or regret.

Mithra 'So you stand alone in a wasteland of slaughter?  You are the ultimate incarnation of War."

Mithra 'I am glad that one such as you was born under my Law.'

Mithra 'Now, strike me down.  Next is your turn.'

And so the First Era came to an end.

The Second Era 6:41-8:43

Spoiler

The man who slew God stole the Throne and became the second God.

That man's name was Muzan.  His Law is defined by the upcoming phrase.

Muzan "My descendants, those born in my Garden of Fallen Heaven.  Feel not shame, feel not regret, the Shameless and Soulless.'

Muzan "Embrace sin and punishment, for that is what it is to be human.'

Muzan's era was a paradise where evil devoured evil... in other words, it was a world of chaos.

All life was born with Original Sin and lived in a world of suffering called Punishment.

In this world, good people simply didn't exist, and it was survival of the fittest, where one devoured others for pleasure or personal gain.  Power was justice and no one repented.

This world where open desire was affirmed pushed civilization forward and created proportionately more sins.

It was a world that burned while giving off the smell of sweet rot like unto an overripe fruit, appearing Hellish and like a beautiful paradise at the same time.

In truth, compared to the first era, it was a much livelier existence, and there were far more smiles in comparison.  There was no shame or regret, so of course there was no reason to bewail one's own fate.

As it was an era where power was justice, it was a fun era for those with power.  Even if one were to be crushed by one even stronger, it was normal just to accept it.

It was a foolish sort of world, so the noise caused by the fools was lively like a party.

Perhaps Muzan was right and that was what it was to be human.  So, perhaps for that very reason...

The Rise of the Morning Star, Neros Satanael (1000 years before to Paradise Lost) 8:44-14:36

Spoiler

Just as Muzan was born from the karma of a universe at war, so was another born from the karma of desire's end.

The man who bore the burden of civilization and literally challenged the heavens.

Neros 'I will live to purify all sins.'

Neros 'I will wipe away all corruption from this world.'

That man was enraged.  Just as Muzan did in the past, he swore to obliterate all that was evil.

'Like Father Like son.'  The similarity of their personalities couldn't help but make me think upon the link between parent and child.

Of course, there was no blood relationship between them.  However, God is both the father and mother of the world.

As long as all of the universe is a part of God, he was a part of Muzan, and he was undeniably the child of Muzan

In that sense, he was the one who inherited his 'father's' blood the most strongly.

Neros 'Foolish god.  Your Law is mistaken.'

Neros 'This broken world, this mistake must be corrected.'

The sin he was born with was Pride.

He never once doubted his superiority, believing he was the absolute good and absolutely correct.

In order to prove that, he was willing to do anything.  Devoid of shame, devoid of regret.  He had no apologetic words in the first place.

For 'I am correct, I believe only in my Law'

He left even madness behind, a Shameless and Soulless so strong as to reach Divinity under the name of Pride.

Neros "Let me create a soul pure as white snow, devoid of Original Sin.'

Neros 'It is a work like unto god, However, there is no problem, for the Lord of the Heavens is corrupt.'

Neros 'I am more worthy of the Divine Throne.'

He used biological weapons created by his own hand to create a cataclysm he called the Great Purification.  Just as before, it was the act of Evil devouring Evil.

Muzan, who was a warrior, obliterated a universe wielding only a sword, while Neros did so indirectly using living weapons.

However, fundamentally it was the same.  It was simply the difference between using strength of arms and strength of the mind.

That's why I say these two are very similar.

Muzan 'Welcome, Neros Satanael, I know you very well.'

Muzan 'I am your ancestor.'

Muzan directed a joyful smile at Neros Satanael, the man who would eventually rise to become the Third God.

It was almost as if he was trying to say he was waiting for this moment.

Muzan "So you can't stand the tainted world?  You despise the sinful?  You wish to purify all that is evil and desire to see a horizon of pure good.'

Muzan 'However, every time you eliminate the filth, you become stained with blood.  Eventually, when you have created your world of pure white, all that will remain is 'you', the ultimate corruption.'

Muzan 'Sin and Punishment are a cycle.'

Muzan "Then what will you do?  What is that smart brain of yours for?'

Muzan 'While holding to the same ideal, create a new horizon.  The paradise only you can create.'

Muzan 'Show it to me.  Next is your turn.'

Muzan sought to bring an end to the war between good and evil from the first era by erasing himself, the ultimate filth that remained behind.

He never once wavered, a strong and severe man to the end.

His vow to obliterate all evil remained unchanging to the end, and he remained undefeated to the end as well.

Neros "Then I shall find my own way to eliminate you.'

Neros 'You won't call me unfair, will you, 'Father'?'

If one were to call Muzan the ultimate warrior, Neros was the ultimate mind.  The battlefield of a warrior was completely different from that of a sholar.

In that sense, Muzan remained undefeatable on the battleground of war.  In all the eras, he was the only person to have ever died never knowing defeat.

However, Satanael, who immediately realized he couldn't defeat Muzan in a direct fight upon seeing him, was also exceptional.

Satanael was a man devoted to efficiency and rationality, and he had no Pride or stubbornness that might get in the way.

It might be trite to compare him to a machine, but Satanael was perhaps the most inhuman of all the gods.
