Just a thought that struck me when was replying to another topic here of the forum; I have no idea what the actual how one actually defines what qualifies as a "visual novel", and where one draws the lines between what's a VN and eroges, dating sims and even rpg:s, to some extent. Couple of examples of what I talking about: Fate/Stay Night. It has adult content, but I personally wouldn't call that an eroge in same way I would call something like Imouto Paradise an eroge. Kamidori Alchemy Meister. It has both strategy-RPG gameplay and a very "visual novel-esk" story, so is that a "visual novel with rpg elements", or a "Strategy-rpg with visual novel elements"? Pheonix write. What genre does this series even belong to? The "text based-mystery-adventure-visual novel-genre"? I don't think what is and what isn't a VN really matters all that much, but it could fun speculating a bit about it anyway. So, what do you guys think? How would you define what a "visual novel" is, and where would you draw the lines between it and other text-based games?

Translated? Nope. The only translated VN with a sort-of-bisexual protagonist that I know of, is http://vndb.org/v15. But that VN doesn't have typical routes, it's one of the least romance-oriented titles available, the protagonist is a girl, and she's... well, not exactly normal. From untranslated stuff, http://vndb.org/v3504 seems to fit like a glove - it has selectable male and female protagonists, and apparently features all possible homo- and heterosexual combinations (plus tentacles?). I didn't read it yet, so I don't know how it really works (I have a feeling it will be focused on Yaoi/Yuri though). Oh, and I have just found this thing -> http://vndb.org/v13066. No idea what it is (doesn't even look like a VN really), but it seems to have the protagonist who swings both ways (it looks very gory and generally messed up though, proceed with caution).

I often see discussions about how correct a genre is for a game. A game could be released as an rpg, but can be more like a visual novel with a lot of gameplay or the other way around. In this case it depends either on your own experience or how much you look into the actual gameplay to get an idea of what to expect. Like Rooke mentioned, I'm not too sure either if "visual novel" is actually a genre you find in Japanese stores. All the other "subgenres" we're always talking about just apply to other entertainment media too, like how "eroge" applies to all games. If you want to buy a game that is a " visual novel" or "contains visual novel elements", and you go to wiki and read the definition they give for "visual novels" you've learned enough to know what to expect I guess. It depends on your own experiences if you think the description is good enough or not. It's really hard to define a genre that has so many different styles, so keep it simple: as long as people know what to expect it's a good enough description. I honestly think people shouldn't think too hard about the meaning of a genre or subgenre. It's just a convenient way to give you an idea of what kind of media you're dealing with. If you really want to have a deep thought about it and form a definition that is correct for any possible product labeled as "visual novel", you could also discuss whether they can actually be called games, and wonder what games are and if they would fit in. Maybe they are more like digital books? I had this discussion a lot of times before, actually I saw people discussing this like a week ago, but I don't feel it is correct to say it is not a book or not a game.

OELVN = Original English Language VN. As in, made outside of Japan.

If you want english translated, there really aren't any options. There are a handful of VNs that have a bunch of female heroines and one male crossdressing "heroine" but they aren't very plentiful. Pure Girl by Frontwing is one example. Perhaps the biggest difference between a dating sim and a VN is mechanics. In a dating sim, you usually have some kind of stats, where you literally build up a visible gauge for the heroines by buying them gifts, taking them on dates, saying random crap to them, etc. There is a pretty good reason why these are almost extinct... In a VN, the game is essentially telling a story, no matter how trite or disgusting it might be (nukige tending toward the latter and moege the former). The player's intervention is minimal and generally restricted to limited choices that pop up at various points of the story. It is also told in either the NVL manner (the one where the text is across the whole screen) or the ADV manner (where it is in a box at the bottom of the screen). An eroge is, quite simply, any video game where actual erotic content exists. I know, it is frequently used as a byword for VNs, but that isn't really accurate. Basically, if it has actual sex in it, it can be considered an eroge.

Honestly? I got over caring about other people's (irl) opinions years ago. Though, I'm not stupid enough to reveal I'm playing games with erotic content to my family, since half are parochial Christians and the other half are... earthy people who wonder why I'm not married with seven kids.

I've finished Danganronpa! at first I didn't like the game much ( there was a lot of illogical points ), but the game kept getting better until the end. though I've guessed the game's main twist, I didn't figure the identity of the mastermind. I think this writer is talented, I can see the second game develop into a much better experience.

Hey, I've actually been translating this on my own for a couple of weeks, and I've finished everything up to the choice in chapter 3-6 (that is chapter 3, part 6). If you're starting a translation project for this, I was wondering if you'd like to look at what I've already done and see if it can be of any use to you guys. I don't have any hacking skills so I just made a series of word documents with the Japanese line, followed by the english line. My Japanese is okay, but not amazing so it will need to be TL checked and edited if you guys decide to use it.
