What makes Grisaia no Kajitsu so great?
Suzu Fanatic and 3 others reacted to Clephas for a topic
I haven't played the English version, so I honestly don't know what it is like. However, from my experience with the Japanese version, as well as with hundreds of other VNs, I can easily tell you what I think stands out about it. 1. A solid plot for each heroine's path- This might sound like a matter of course, but in most VNs, heroine paths are generally excuses for H-scenes, with minimal drama and weak stories. Michiru's path is the weakest by far, but even hers was fairly solid from an objective perspective (setting aside the fact that Michiru sucks except for comic relief). 2. A protagonist who stands out as a round character- To be blunt, VN protagonists tend to be flat or a bit weak-willed, to allow people to self-insert into the story. Grisaia's protagonist is a powerful personality, with a strongly written internal narrative that draws you into his somewhat warped vision of the world (he is also a bit of a tribute to the protagonist of Full Metal Panic, lol) 3. A background setting that stands on its own and is properly utilized to strengthen the plot- Very few VNs manage to both create an interesting setting and utilize it properly. This is an important element when writing any story, but failing to fill out the setting and/or failing to utilize the setting's properties as part of the plot are weak points. The fact that Grisaia manages to so thoroughly fulfill this requirement is one of the secrets to its success. 4. An interesting/amusing character dynamic and characters in general- Simply put, developing the story's characters as well as their connections to one another is probably the biggest strong point of many high-quality VNs. Grisaia fulfills this aspect in spades, as the heroines' relationships to one another as important as their relationship to Yuuji, birthing many interesting situations and much laughter. Edit: Another important point is that two of the characters - Amane and Yuuji - are basically adults in all but name. Most VN heroines and protagonists tend to be pretty immature. This allows Yuuji to take on the role of a mentor to Makina and for Amane to be something of a mother to all the characters. Speaking from experience, one of the best protagonist roles is for them to be a mentor (outside of rapegames and choukyou). Just off-hand, I can think of four kamige where the protagonist fulfills such a role in at least one path. The simple act of putting a (relatively speaking) psychologically mature protagonist into such a role creates some really interesting character interactions.4 points -

The “TexasDice creeps around at night like a weirdo”-club is officially opened!
Suzu Fanatic and 2 others reacted to TexasDice for a topic
TL;DR: I bought this telescope for little babbys today at an electronics store, because why not. Can't afford something more expensive anyway and I don't want to carry a heavy machine up the fucking hills. The TexasDice and astronomy lovers club Club activities: - Looking at things in the night sky. - Reading about how to look at things in the night sky - Complain about not being able to look at things in the night sky (Possible causes: rain, snow, clouds, civil war, Nekopara Fandisk release, etc.) Members List: Quick Q&A: “Dice-sensei-san-sama-senpai-sama-kun, can I touch the telescope?” No, go jump of a bridge. “How can I possibly join this amazing club?” You can't. “What's the fucking point then?” I bought a little telescope and decided to share this information with the public. Feel free to post opininions like: "Good for you", or "I don't care" or "That thing sucks, should've bought dis one insteed, unsubscribed!!!111!". I'll go test it tonight, seeing as the weather's perfect for the occasion.3 points -
Moe Wars: Character Development Episodes (Completed)
Kosakyun and 2 others reacted to darkotakusouls for a topic
Here are the 3 character development episodes I have made using Ren'py. I figured I should put them in the same thread since they go together, but you don't really have to read them in any order. I am working on the main conflict episode, which I may need help programing but I will make a thread for that later after I at least get the ruff draft done. I tagged it "Sexual Content" but it doesn't actually have any sex in it. It's just the has strong sexual styled comedy. On Ren'py I had labeled it +16 because of this, but there is no nudity or anything in the visual novels. Summary: Devil Corp is holding tournaments to test out their new nanobots known as REN. It's very simple, really. The premise, it's the ultimate white knight simulator. Think about it, "you" are the ultimate delta special forces ex-secret agent sarcastic badass marine, a dude that weights 120 pounds wet and has the same muscle mass as your average pro-ana supporter but can take out the entire UFC roster if need be, a mary sue if there ever was one, who comes to a school... that only has girls. And they all want the D, or will want the D (since it's that kind of game, you KNOW that they will want the D, you are supposed to know) So far so good. Except that you find out that the girls are damaged. They have "issues," they're complicated. But you? Oh, you can fix them. And they will want your D in the process. Some of them might even call you daddy. Of course, you have to save them, but you'll be a badass about it, sometimes to ridiculous extremes, to a point where the MC's actions defy logic and human rights themselves. But that's okay, because he's a badass former ranger 00 agent licensed to kick ass who's never wrong, so everything will be fine in the end. It's about wish fulfillment, in the end. It's designed to push an otaku's romantic buttons with surgical precision, and I really admire the writers for it. Oh, and the common route drags like fucking hell, but Angelic Howl is really good. And Makina's bad ending is gold.2 points

Unrealism isn't the right thought here, it's being unbelievable. Something this weird and alien needs to be setup properly, or it will come out of nowhere, confuse and break immersion. Especially considering how it's an anomaly limited to a single route. Compare it to the following scenario: You're watching a Liam Neeson revenge-movie about him trying to free his daughter from a bunch of thugs in a war-torn country. And halfway through the movie, Dr. Frankenstein appears and starts to resurrect corpses.1 point -

Msost of the small differences in the UBW anime are there because it continues where Fate Zero left off. It has to take things into account that didn't exist back when the VN was written (the more detailed backstories), and it was a very nice change in my opinion. There also are other additions to flesh out some characters more than didn't get that much attention in the VN in the first place, which again seemed like a very nice touch to me. Also all the non-existent anime mentioned here, you all have great imagination. Maybe I should pitch in and make up one too... like Chaos;Head! Wouldn't that be a funny adaptation, hahaha! Haha.... ha....1 point

So, I completed Kosame's route in one go yesterday. My thoughts:1 point -
There's unlockable routes in it so you have to follow that to an extent. I suggest starting with Kotori as it serves as the best introduction to the setting and it's not bad. Lucia's route is better and you can start with that if you really want. Shizuru and Chihaya routes are the weak links so stuff those in the middle somewhere and close out the heroine routes with Akane. Then there are the final true routes.1 point

One thing I remember finding a bit annoying when I first started out (which was a year ago), is that there as so many slightly different ways to learn. And different people learn more efficiently doing slightly different things. Lol, I remember one person I spoke to on this site told me that with only rudimentary understanding of the language he read a lot of Untld Nukiges for an entire year, and eventually found himself able to read more complicated VNs. I found that to be an interesting (not to mention extreme) answer. I can impart you with some advice from my personal experience. But please keep in mind that my level is around advanced beginner and intermediate learner. As everyone has been pointing out, basic grammar is a must. I highly recommend Tae Kim and reading through Basic Grammar, Essential Grammar, and Special Expressions (you can save Advanced Topics for later). Personally I read each section a first time somewhat quickly to acquaint myself with the material, then I would reread that section thoroughly and take notes. Once I finished the section a second time, I would review the key points (usually various conjugations), and then finally move onto the next section. Once you feel you have comfortable knowledge of necessary Japanese grammar, then I recommend to start reading (preferably something simple). By reading (with the help of ITH and Translation Aggregator) you will not only gain vocabulary through repeated words, but more importantly at this stage; you will be training your brain to understand Japanese grammar in it's native habitat. Before with Tae Kim you learned grammar on a theoretical level, now your knowledge is put in practice. Once I felt reasonably comfortable with Japanese grammar in practice I started placing more importance on vocabulary acquisition. At first I used the old fashioned approach with flashcards. I wrote down the words that were either frequently used, or that my dictionary told me were N5, N4, or N3 level vocabulary. However, flashcards got really annoying. Not to mention reviewing words that are stripped from the context felt pointless to me. Eventually I ditched them and started putting my vocabulary words on post-it notes and attaching them to my wall. That way, when I read something, and a word seems familiar; I'll check my wall first before checking the dictionary. Admittedly a bit of a weird method, but for me at least it has been way more effective than using flashcards (either digital ones like Anki, or physical ones). So yeah. I definitely recommend getting advice from people who have already achieved full literacy in the language. But I hope I provided useful advice for the earlier stages of learning. Also, regarding how long it will take to reach literary fluency. That answer honestly varies from person to person, but the method I've modeled my learning style from (Aaeru's method) is scheduled to take around 2 years.1 point

I covered fruits of grisaia for its release. Would have written an article about it's kickstarter at the time if I had had a site then. http://extramana.com/tag/the-fruits-of-grisaia/ The reason it's not been promoted is due to how successful the kickstarter was, it's common for developers to only market their KS and if it does well do little else. They already secured a sizeable amount of profit for doing nothing more than a TS that was available for free, why bother trying to market to the IGN crowd who won't buy it anyway?1 point -

Japanese Help Thread
Darklord Rooke reacted to dowolf for a topic
Depending on context, I have translated はい as "Yes," "Yes, sir/ma'am," "Here," "Present," "Thank you," "I'm sorry?" and, of course, "No." Each of those words is the correct term to use in some situation; blanketly translating the whole bunch as "yes" would have been a disservice (and, in cases where はい means "no," simply incorrect). Japanese and English are not similar languages. There are very few 1-to-1 mappings from one language to the other, if any. Remember that your target audience is people who don't know Japanese. Demanding they understand the intricacies of how, say, Japanese negative questions work is foolish.1 point -

What is a Visual Novel for you?
heavenlysf reacted to Parallel Pain for a topic
Their personal meaning to me I already explained in this thread As for the medium itself, it's a medium. As it stands it's certainly a window into Japanese culture and subculture. To be it's an incredibly good medium, but it's also incredibly underutilized. There's two parts to a VN so let's start with the story part. Many people mentioned screen/anime, novel, and manga/comics. I am going to be different and say there is one other thing VN is more functionally closer to than any of those three: Theater. That I have amateur theater background has nothing to do with this Let's break it down: VN has tachi-e, background, and CG. It needs a lot less descriptive writing than novel, but can convey close to the same amount of details. It can not convey as much detail as screen or comics, but in turn invites the audience to fill in with their imagination (before someone butcher me, manga just means comics in Japanese. Yes I know they mean only Japanese comics in English) It has music to help build mood, something it shares with screen. And there is acting. In this case voice acting, again to help with mood. What also shares all those characteristics? Theater. They are both middle points between showing you the entire scene and leaving it entirely to your imagination. Now VN don't have actual acting-acting, and probably can not be used for a musical. But it can convey thoughts and description better than a soliloquy or the chorus can. If I were to put rank the five: Screen, Comics, Theater, Novel, and VN in different categories, from 5 to 1, 5 being most 1 being least, I would put it: Screen Comics Theater Novel Visual Novel Time Needed 1 3 2 5 4 Mood-Immersion 2 1 4 3 5 Descriptive Details 5 4 2 1 3 Plot/Character Details 1 2 3 5 4 Open to Imagination 1 2 3 5 4 Now these are not set in stone, but just in general. So as a storytelling medium, I feel VN is like an even more personal version of Theater. It's also a nice balance compared to other forms. Each form has something very specific to it. VN is it's ability give the audience the visual and audio input from a character's point of view for long periods (or even most). Theater by design must be third person, while comics and screen can not only limit their first person view to short segments for emphasis. Novels can be written for first person, but has no sound or sight. I feel this allows VN to be the most personal of all the forms. Third person could definitely be done on the VN format (interestingly all the third person VN I've read are SLG or RPG) but I prefer first person. VN can provide enough details for narration to be minimum, or even non existent, so might as well not squander the chance to make the story personal, with access to thoughts and stuff. Having said all that, I feel VN is being limited by its fanbase and dating-sims history. I hope some day there could be something like, I don't know, a WWII VN or Fantasy VN with little or no romance. VN I feel is the only one of the four mediums that is limited to centering on comedy/romance/drama and taking little experimentation in other genres, instead of a more frequent, wider reach. With that I go to the game part. Of those 5 mediums, VN is the one unique in that it makes the audience participate, and in ways far engaging than Theater or Choose-your-own-adventure novels can without needing to sacrifice story-telling in theory (in practice it will likely happen). Yet I haven't seen any go down this route. At best I've seen games and story in the same software but more-or-less independent of each other. (Though Key has a interesting thing of writing replayability and routes into the story itself). I hope someday I can find a VN where the story path is decided by gameplay, like what objective you pick in an SLG, how you do in an RPG, etc. Long Live the Queen does this. And it's quite refreshing and entertaining. Just that both story and gameplay are very barebone.1 point
