As someone who watched Deadpool yesterday, I am definitely in support of super hero movies getting R ratings in the future. The amount of freedom you get when you don't have to tone down a movie for a teen audience is priceless and more movie makers need to realize this. I seriously did not expect Deadpool to go as far as it did, I never saw any other super hero movie do this much. It was incredibly refreshing and I hope we can see more of it in the future. Funny fact: Deadpool got a 14+ rating over here in Portugal and when I went to see it the theater was full of 10 year old kids lol.3 points

Download finally finished. I'll do my own Steam Key giveaway later, hint: will involve the color pink, and lotsa lotsa sucking up First off, well, now we know why it's 2.1 GB, there's a damn folder for each language, so ~700 MB each, for KR, JP, EN Second off, HOORAY FOR MODERN VNS, visuals look good, title music was good, good good good. Third off, man, I just played Zero Escape: VLR, don't throw the Three Laws of Robotics at me and get me all hyped 'bout dem robots!@$#@$ Fourth off, yes, the english is definitely a bit stiff / unnatural sounding. I'd say between mediocre and decent sounding. Bummer. Fifth off, HEY! So, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is getting an R Rating
DarkZedge and one other reacted to mitchhamilton for a topic
for you american readers you already know what i mean by r-rating. for those that arent familiar with what im talking about; an r rating is the highest rating a movie can receive, while still being able to be released in theaters across the united states. they usually include one or more of the following; sex, nudity, language, bloody violence, gore, mature themes, etc, etc. A lot of movies intentionally avoid receiving an r rating as this usually means less ticket sales since most parents dont want their child to be traumatized by a nipple or something. however, ever since the release of deadpool that broke every box office record that has existed EVER (might be exaggerating) they are now more open about r ratings. on the down side is people in hollywood might make their movie rated r for the wrong reasons, ie, batman v superman dawn of justice. now the makers of bvsdoj (<--figure it out) have stated that they always wanted to go for an r rating but didnt since the studio was against it. however, after deadpool was r rated and not only was a huge success but it had the highest opening weekend, ever. i honestly dont believe an r rating was bvsdoj's intention in the first place, they just want to jump on the bandwagon before its too late. their mentality seems more like "R rating, equals good movie" when it should be "Good writing and production team, equals good movie." now i know i started this thread with talking about bvsdoj but i really want to talk about this whole r rating more than anything and bvsdoj is a good example for how its done wrong. bvsdoj is simply just jumping on the bandwagon, now they have to make their movie r rated simply because thats what all the hype is all about, but its not really needed for bvsdoj. you may be wondering why i think its just them jumping on the bandwagon when for all i know, everything they said is true. maybe they did always want an r rating but i really dont have faith in a movie where ive seen three full length trailers for it and i still have no clue what its going to be about. all i know is batman is going to fight superman and apparently thats all i need to know to go watch this movie. it is not. oh, and lex luthor wants them to fight or something and wonder woman is in it. yay. so again, forgive me if i think if they are just looking for any excuse to get peoples butts in the theaters, that dont rely on them making a more interesting movie. how its done right is the upcoming wolverine movie. a movie solely focusing on wolverine, deadpool, or the punisher are comic characters that need the violence to make it work. why? because they are very violent people, or they deal with very violent people. an r rating for these characters makes more sense. which is why its a great thing the next standalone wolverine is getting an r rating. deadpool did open up the possibility for more r rated movies in theaters, which is nice since im getting sick of die hard movies being freakin pg-13! no, wait. im just sick of die hard movies. but this is a double edged sword since studios see it as a positive thing and will exploit the shit out of it, until we're right back where we started. what are your thoughts on deadpool's influence as an r rated movie or r ratings in general?2 points -

Culture Gap in VNs
Kawasumi and one other reacted to Chronopolis for a topic
There's obviously a culture gap (real life), but I don't feel like I encounter it very much in most VN's. I feel like the typical VN and LN as 'medium genres' both have their own set of tropes/patterns you have to get used to, nether which bears that much resemblance to Japanese culture. What we're used to is this genre, not Japanese culture exactly. There are things which make reference to normal Japanese school/work life, but I don't and can't really identify them all because I'm not intimately familiar with those places. You do pick things up gradually though. Haven't played any VN's where I really noticed collectivism...but one, I might not know what to be looking for, and two, it hasn't really occurred to me to compare social interactions/relations presented in VN's to ones in the western world. I'm pretty individualistic. My idea of culture is...mostly centered around the values/culturally based interpersonal relations it leads to individuals holding, and how one might go about living the life they seek within and around that setting. Ofc, western cultures are probably a fair bit more conducive to this approach, which is a big example why I don't ness. like Japanese culture.2 points -

Unhack 2
Emi reacted to InvertMouse for a topic
Four years after the Motherworm’s death, a masked AI known as Program X is threatening to throw cyberspace back into chaos. With virus numbers back on the rise, the unhacker decides to open Smash Security once more. This time, a new AI named Neonya is there to battle by his side. Victory should be guaranteed with a superior AI like Neonya, but with signs of malfunction showing, the risk of her going rogue is ever present. She merely wishes to be accepted as her company’s official AI, yet the unhacker finds himself unable to crown her. After all, doing so will mean dethroning his former companions, the ones he still thinks about to this day. But there is one thing that terrifies the unhacker above all else—why do Program X and her minions look so much like friends from a distant past? Hello people! I still remember sharing Unhack 1 with everyone here back when Fuwanovel was new. Some of the folks from back then are now my closest mates on social media. You know who you are. Thank you for always supporting me through the years. A few months after I closed off Unhack 1, the idea for this second game had in fact already crossed my mind. I held off on production to avoid sequelitis, and to tell the truth, I wanted to keep people waiting for a bit as well. I feel like now is a good time to at last unveil this project. Unhack 2 will have no gameplay like the first title did. I tried so many times to blend story with gameplay, and despite my best effort, the results were only average. Some of you who are kindly following me already know I am moving away from gameplay in general. With that said, Unhack 2 will feature password puzzles that will at times require players to break out of the 4th wall. For instance, there might be a passcode hidden on Unhack 2's webpage. These puzzles can be skipped for those who prefer to focus on the narrative. Here is the game's website: http://unhack2.invertmouse.com There is a demo build available, so please feel free to have a look: And as always, I could use your support on Steam Greenlight: Thank you so much everyone!1 point -

I wouldn't exactly call being the 3rd most sold R-rated movie "backfiring" Having more of these movies be less restricted in terms of theme will only help make people realize super heroes aren't just for teenagers and I think that can only be a positive thing. I kinda felt sorry for them because they probably didn't get most of the jokes. I also think some of the moms only went there because they thought it was some other kind of spiderman.1 point

japanese is so hard
kingdomcome reacted to Rainey for a topic
The more you see japanese words, the more natural it'll become. You won't even have to think to recognize the kana or kanji. It's like the ABCs. It just takes time and lots of exposure to the language. I remember when I first started learning it in high school, it took me a couple of weeks to not have trouble telling the kana apart (things like め and ぬ). Over the years, it'll become like second nature and you'll be able to read japanese as fast as your native language. By the end of your learning, it's mostly just vocab you'll be working on once you get down the grammar. But first, most important thing, is that you keep at it. If you stop now because you feel it's too hard, you'll never get anywhere.1 point -

Conjueror's Untranslated Visual Novel Tournament [Discussion]
ChaosRaven reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
Not really, actually it emphasised quite emphatically a point that needs to be kept in mind. The hardcore userbase of the VN community is small. Really small. Small enough that the games which are considered good and subsequently hyped within the fandom can make very little impact on the sale figures when it comes time for release. IMHHW is trashed within the community and yet sold 50,000 copies, and yet some games held in high esteem within the community move only a few thousand units. So it’s important to remember when looking at the results of these polls that very few people participate (only a few hundred,) which is representative of how small this community currently is. The opinions of this community can easily get drowned out by part of another fandom, and for games to sell well they need to be appeal to people outside the hardcore VN community. EDIT: That being said, I'm quite annoyed Eustia lost >:c1 point -

Mr Poltroon reacted to Decay for a topic
The Grisaia common route is legitimately the best part of the entire VN. Not saying the other routes aren't good, but that common route is just the absolute best school slice of life comedy you'll see anywhere, ever, and I loved it.1 point -
What are you playing?
Mr Poltroon reacted to Fred the Barber for a topic
I've put in a few hours with the Grisaia no Kajitsu common route now, enough to have formed some initial thoughts: - Production values are really impressive across the board. Great art, great music, some nice little touches like sometimes changing sprites in the middle of a line. The only VN I can think of which was quite this good in this way is probably KonoSora. - For complex reasons, purely on the grounds of appearance, I'm really taken with Michiru. Her character design and her poses make her dynamic, physical, vibrant. She's nearly popping out of the screen, with that foreshortened finger pointing directly at me while she spouts some stock tsundere line (sometimes knowingly, sometimes unknowingly). I don't think any character has ever grabbed my attention this way - maybe F/SN's Rin and KonoSora's Ageha are in the same ballpark, but they've got nothing on that pointing finger and outraged face combo. - Characters. How I've missed reading about actually interesting characters. Amane, Makina, and Sachi are all really interesting already, and I can see the shadows lurking around the corner for them for when things start to get heavy. With Michiru, I'm inclined to agree with Yuuji's assessment that she's simply kind of dumb, but I don't mind having that around as a foil for the others, especially given, as I mentioned above, how drawn I am to the way she looks. Yumiko... meh. The box cutter obsession is a little alarming, but right now I'm honestly finding her pretty boring. Probably I'm due for her to get a lot more screen time in the common route, since it seems to kind of be rotating amongst heroines to focus on right now, trying to do that initial build-up of familiarity and affection, and I don't think she's gotten much focus yet. At any rate, it's working: familiarity and affection are definitely on the rise. - Am I crazy, or is there no Backlog feature? I couldn't find it anywhere in the UI, and hard though it is to believe, I'm wondering if maybe this game doesn't have one. It's been a while since I've read such a straightforward, school life-centric common route - this is going to sound really weird, but it's actually a nice change of pace, after recently playing a lot of more out-there VNs like Demonbane and Gahkthun, or even the twisted version of school life in G-Senjou. Apparently there's a part of me that craves this trite setting every now then. Given how easy that craving is to satisfy, I guess I should be happy about that.1 point -
Do what I did to get out of the High School Charamoege trap and dive straight into the Corpse Party series. It's a standard Supernatural Horror where them High School kids are trapped in da skoo and die glorious deaths. A good way to say peace out to the average school VN That'll prepare you for the Double S's, Saya no Uta and Swan Song. Saya no Uta is Psychological with a tad bit of Sci-Fi/Alien Horror and Swan Song is Post-Apocalyptic Societal Collapse Despair. Then you'll finally be ready for euphoria. Should probably throw in Cartagra and KnS somewhere in there, not really horror, but them murders can get pretty graphic. It's a walk in the park though if you covered all of the above prior : P ~~ No idea about those translations, but if you're looking for a magical/fantasy VN, I'd recommend ...Will edit this later if I think of something1 point

japanese is so hard
kingdomcome reacted to Zalor for a topic
Nothing will compare to my High school Chinese classes in terms of difficulty. How intense was it? Within the first month she made each student sign a contract telling us that she would no longer use any English in the class, and that any English she heard us speaking would result in a 1 point deduction from our overall grade. Meaning after the first month, the class became 100% immersive. She explained all new grammar, vocab, etc in Chinese. She would tell us when assignments were due, quickly in Chinese. On top of that, a typical homework assignment was writing a page length of stuff in Chinese each day. This bitch was crazy. Hell, I think this class was probably harder than most College level Chinese classes. Needless to say, my Japanese classes are very reasonable compared to my one other language learning experience.1 point -

Culture Gap in VNs
kingdomcome reacted to tymmur for a topic
I don't see a problem in the culture gap. If it is a problem, then "fix" it with translation notes. If you read it in Japanese, you asked for issues if you don't get the culture. I once read a thread at VNDB regarding this topic. It ended in a flamewar between "keep it Japanese" and "rewrite into match American culture or people will not understand it". The pro Americans claimed ownership of English and any English reading person who wasn't from America was declared as being wrong and insignificant. Unsurprisingly one of those pro-Americans has also made the statement that "(some translator group, I forgot which one) should be banned from translating because they use British English". That guy managed to get himself banned from VNDB though, but not for those statements. Personally I would prefer the culture in a VN to be the culture it was written to match. Rewriting your own concepts into a translation is a big no-no*. This mean a Japanese VN should have Japanese culture and an English VN could easily have English/American culture. It's not the culture itself, which is the issue, but rather the rewrite, which ruins everything it touches. I have yet to see a strait to English VN, which I like as much as those, which were originally Japanese, but I think that's more a writer quality issue than the culture. To be fair, I'm not too happy about the majority of the Japanese ones either. I do really love some though. Otherwise I wouldn't be here * jokes like play on words are hard to translate. This mean the "correctness" of a translation could be accepted as less accurate if it doesn't alter the overall meaning. Translators could even add jokes if it matches the VN, but care would have to be taken when doing something like that as it should never alter the mood/culture/story or anything like that.1 point -

Usually after changing your locale to Japanese, If My Heart Had Wings (Kono Oozora Tsubasa No Hirogete), should work fine, however I've seen that some people are being given 0x00000039 Critical Legacy level errors while the game tries to load sprites. Steps: Steam should use the new .exe file by default. If not, you may have to create a shortcut to your desktop. Comment below if it works for you, and have fun!1 point -
Sekai Project cancels campaign of WAS The Hourglass of Lepidoptera
Kawasumi reacted to CeruleanGamer for a topic
It's not silly because the very last thing we need to do is keep white knighting Sekai Project for all their fuck ups, broken promises, and ridiculously late delivery of pledges/rewards. This experience should have been a good lesson for them, so they will try to pick partners with better reputation and track record. I prefer a small number of high quality content VNs from respectable partners over high quantity. Quantity isn't everything. Customer satisfaction is a huge determination of sales in this day and age. See Apple.1 point -
I am a huge fan of these types of games the sim-tactical-rpg-base-building-management types. One thing to note not all the games are management per say but rather fall into two or more of the descriptors listed. It seems that many of the games listed both above and here are games that have elements but might not be true management games in some sense. Often times they fall more into the category of tactical strategy rpg but eh maybe that would also be something of interest to you? Some of the best sim-tactical-management games I've played are the following Age of Wonders (series), XCOM (series), Crusader Kings II, Endless (Legend & Space), Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes, Star Wars: Empire At War Gold Edition (and way back I used to play Galactic Conquest), Civilization series, Chroma Squad: Tactical RPG, Tropico series, Anno 2070, Europa Universalis IV, Star Craft series, Blood Bowl (fantasy american football), Galactic Civilizations II, and then a little bit more on the stretching it side of the type of game Valkyria Chronicles (similar to xcom especially on the hardest difficulty but without a huge emphasis on base building you do have to manage units though), Fire Emblem, Darkest Dungeon, and Recettear (fantasy item shop owner). If looking for visual novels that have a management type of feel to them you might want to try Kamidori Alchemy Meister, which is both a strategy rpg, vn, and management game. Some of these titles might be stretching it a bit but most of these games have elements of what you are looking for if nothing else. Hopefully you can find something to check out.1 point

Recent (Japanese) Things You Have Purchased
LiquidShu reacted to OriginalRen for a topic
My Goods for 2016 - Post 1/2 To LOVE-Ru Harem: It is probably safe to assume that some of these images may be NSFW, so view them at your own discretion. None of the images are terribly inappropriate though. Starting out, I finally finished the Vertex collection of the To LOVE-Ru girls! Since none of these figures are in print anymore, this collection was quite expensive. Momo cost the most, and is closely followed by Nana, Yami, and Mea in that order. Overall, the whole set was well worth the hunt and I am glad I can finally put the entire crew on my shelf. Each girl comes with a small base to hold them in place, as well as a large base that is used to magnetically attach their small stand. Each large base can fit a total of 2 characters, resulting in them being paired up as shown in the images below (specifically in the Yami/Mea pair). Sticking with the To LOVE-Ru theme, we have the lovely Lala! A lot of people praised Alter's top of the line body craft on this one, going as far as commending the natural "body fat" detail. Since her preorder's were only open for a very limited time back in 2015, she is not an easy figure to find. I luckily managed to stumble upon her via sheer luck, and I am more than satisfied. After her, we have another Mea. I ended up purchasing another Mea and Yui on a whim since I knew I already owned a shit ton of To LOVE-Ru figurines/character goods. I've never actually watched the show, but something about these girls screams "I'm horny" in my mind, and that is absolutely fine with me. While Mea isn't the best craft, Yui's legs and overall lengthy appearance as a woman really got the blood pumping for a purchase. I think I seriously own an entire harem of To LOVE-Ru girls now... Large Scales: Switching gears, I had to buy some bulky figures. I started with FREEing's Ikaros from Sora no Otoshimono since I absolutely love their bunny girls. Nymph had a weird face, and Astrea was too expensive in my opinion. After Ikaros, I decided to add that one chick from Railgun's universe. Seriously, did I mention FREEing's 1/4 bunny girls are fantastic? And of course, what collection is complete without the lovely 1/2 scale Super Sonico! She ended up being my 2nd 1/2 scale, making a spot on my shelves next to Kirino from Orimemo. Say what you want about her, but don't joke about the price. This figure is more expensive than a single paycheck. Christ... Loli Corner:* A lot of figurines this time around, Shiro being the biggest contender this year. I also ended up purchasing the legendary "donut" Shinobu, thus upping the value of my collection by a large margin. Seriously, a lot of people want this girl. In addition, I ended up purchasing Gluttony from the Seven Deadly Sins series, thus adding another girl to my Envy purchase. Chino once again joins the fray, with a Tenshin Ranman character to spice up the mix. And of course, who can forget the wonderful "swimsuit" that Shiro wears? You be the judge. Great "Assets" Collection: The title says it all. Whether it's a bountiful chest and/or a nice ass, these figures are an occasional must in my collection. Shinmai Maou no Testament, Ro-Kyu-Bu, Beat Angel Escalayer, and a few more. Sonico also makes this list with her macaron delicacies. Tits are life, ass is hometown. Love Live? Love Live: You think Love Live ever goes away? Hell no, not with @Ceris and @Nosebleed. Even if they don't play the game as much anymore, it never goes away. Adding a few girls to the Alter collection On the fence about Emi still; not a fan of the face, but the body is so sweet. I was never a fan of the Rin outfit, but the whole set of girls going forward looks really nice. Can't wait for Umi and Honoka. Oh, did I mention that Nozomi is being released in June, the same month as my birthday? Still the best girl. Kantai Collection Paradise: I own so many Kancolle figures, but I can never have enough. Here are a few more additions to the collection. Unfortunately, no Hibiki or Ro-500 yet, but as soon (if ever) those figures hit the market I will be all up on that like horse in the wild west. Sadly, Ques-Q is making a lot of the figures in the Kancolle lineup, which means I'm missing out on quite a lot. Sorry, I can't justify the amount of money they charge for their quality, but as for the rest of the companies out there? Take my money please! I especially love Funny Knights (the last figure in this set), and this one shall mark the 8th one I own. Miscellaneous Figures: A random assortment of additional figurines! Some of these are from visual novels, while others were bought simply because I love the face. When collecting, I often times refer to these types of figurines as "filler" material. In other words, they help expand my collection, but at the same time are fun to look at. Some of the games featured below include Yoake Mae Yori Ruri-Iro na, Se Kirara, and Muv-Luv. Maia from Aquarion Logos is an obvious purchase given my female body preferences. 18+ Figurines: Now I normally don't buy 18+ figurines, but this time around, I finally shopped at Daiki and Orca Toys and let my dick brain guide my decisions. These ladies are very well gifted and the art style is something new and fresh. Raita specifically has a very unique body structure for his women, but somehow, it works for me. In addition, my favorite guilty pleasure doujin artist Shuz makes an appearance with his famously known Saeko! L-cup breasts don't draw themselves you know. Sometimes, I need to add a little naughtiness to my collection. Figma: I finally caved for a Figma this year. Two of them to be exact. Who is Mika without her lovely sister? *Please note that having a lolicon collection does not associate said individual with being a lolicon. They just happen to like these specific characters.1 point -

Yuno-Gasai reacted to Soulless Watcher for a topic
The topic of sex in America is, quite frankly, fucking ridiculous and confusing as hell. Sex is a completely healthy and natural process of the human condition, why it has been demonized and treated like a taboo subject is beyond me. God only knows what the childrens will do if they learn about sex at an early age, so they might be more mentally prepared when they hit puberty. Because the inevitability of hiding the facts of sex will lead them to learn the majority of the subject matter from High/Middle school, and that will never go well. Although I do get why "gamers" don't really like visual novels, because VNs are not really games (for the most part). I always kinda viewed them as picture books for grownups, so I can understand why a community that is used to COD, Starcraft, or League of Legends would not be enamored with the genre.1 point
