At this rate we might see them going out of business. Same time I can envision FAKKU buying them out
I'll never buy anything from them again if it happens. I'll never forgive Fakku for going to a completely pay to use model.

1. Steins;Gate - Easily my favorite and most gripping visual novel I've read. It's got problems with pacing early and sort of breaks down into a sort of psuedo-dating each waifu part in the second half, but as a narrative ignoring the alternative endings this is hands down my favorite. I read this every year, this year I did it with my best friend each of us voicing different characters to each other.
Everything else isn't really in any particular order.
2. Steins;Gate 0 - This is next just because my top is Steins;Gate. It vastly improves on the original due to the fact time travel isn't as prevalent early on, allowing for more detailed character growth and development. Further I think it made a step in the right direction narrative taking away the narrative reigns from Okabe to see other characters perspectives first hand. Also the alternative endings were not simply waifu endings but served actual character development and stand alone narratives. In a lot of ways I like this better than the original, but the original is the original so I gotta <3. Also there's like 95% less Kurisu in this. I reread this one with the anime that came out, though the anime was disappointing.
3. Maji de Watashi ni Koi - Honestly, as dumb as this visual novel felt to read it was really dumb fun. It's like a guilty pleasure visual novel for me but not entirely, because it had good points that I think make liking it more justifiable than liking some other things. Though I didn't reread all the routes its still always there for me.
4. Clannad - What can be said that hasn't already been? I didn't really read every character's route but Misae's backstory and the After Story both gripped me all the way through. Having lost my mother when I was too young to remember her (not right at birth) I could really relate with the struggle of the end of the story. Fortunately my Dad didn't become a deadbeat and raised me well I think. I reread the main story line this year, skipped all the side routes.
5. White Album 2 Introductory Chapter - I know this gets shit on a lot for the poor translation, but when I read it, it honestly was completely fine in my mind. The story and the characters and their relationships were all great, I think this is the perfect example for how to make a well grounded story that is also very emotional. I often find some deaths in visual novels are there just to force feelings rather than to help characters grow and develop, so I wish more would take an example from this and cut cheap deaths and just naturally get the feels out of the reader. I reread this one every winter now. -
I just did Sakura Sakura if it's of interest to you, I don't see it on your list. I wrote up a review of it on it's release thread but overall I'd say it was pretty fun and had some heartfelt romance, especially in
SpoilerNanako's route.
(Just put a character's name and their route idk how much you care about that but yeah.

VNs based on things that already had an anime like New Game! The Challenge Stage!, Nisekoi: Yomeiri!?, Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?? Wonderful Party! and Himouto! Umaru-chan Himouto! Ikusei Keikaku generally tend to be pretty easy since they often feature full voice acting including the MC and usually don't have too complex language. These types of VNs are generally found for ps vita and PS4 and it would probably make it easier for you if you found something based on an anime or manga you like.
If you want to be able to switch between english and japanese due to not being confortable enough with japanese to try only japanese there are some on PC which has both japanese and english language setting. Some examples are Nekopara, Japanese school life and most of Frontwing's titles, well the newer ones at least.
Thanks for this, I'll look into these as I do have a PS4 (no vita), and of course I intend to look into manga as well, as a way to practice reading. I think visual novels are my preferred medium because I can take it at my own pace, many it's easy to replay voice lines, and I can always reread logs. It's the best of manga and anime for learning for me I feel, because anime it's a bit tedious to keep rewinding and manga there's no voice over to hear pronunciations.

Also I'm not sure if Making Lovers was easy I don't remember it's complexity well but it's a SMEE game so it's usually very easy.
I'll take a look at these, regardless of if I intend to read them right away or not. Maybe in the future they'll be good options.

I want to add, that if something is fun and easy to read I am happy to check it out even if it was translated already. So if you have recommendations for translated titles I am happy to check those out. -

Otome make consoles their target demographic. Consoles mean no porn, and no porn means they need something else to attract a fan base.
All ages slice of life or drama cannot carry sales on their own, unless you're already an established player like Key or in the science; series.
I was unaware of this, thanks for sharing. I don't really know much about the numbers and sales of visual novels as a business so I could really only speculate as to why things were the way they were from my own knowledge of things.

Some day, someone has to explain to me why otomes get all the cool action stuff while the VN's for dudes are just boring slice of life and drama.
Kind of reminds me that I've still Hakuoki left on Steam to read...
It's an interesting question and one I don't really know the answer to... Of course there are a bunch of VN's for a male demographic that have action, but there are many more slice of life drama ones. For every Fate/Stay (which I did not enjoy, actually) there's a bunch of em like Clannad, Hatsukoi 1/1, and If My Heart Had Wings.
If I had to guess it's because the visual novel medium does not lend itself to action as much as other mediums. Especially combat based RPGs and what not like Persona or Kamidori or Bunny Black, they all translate combat much better than just text. Even more so anime communicates combat much much better. -
I am learning Japanese slowly but surely, and I want something simple but pleasant to read that I can work over slowly while trying to learn new words.

Can I be one of those people whose opinions everyone blindly trusts? I've read almost DOZENS of visual novels and I can say with certainty that John Cena's Sexy High School Adventure!!! 2 is a kamige.
First one sucks though.
John Cena is the wrong waifu, if it's not Macho Man I don't care for it.

Maybe I'll read it with my girl then, she's not interested in my waifu visual novels so I'll just get her this husbando visual novel.

Honestly I just eat a lot of steamed white rice as a side dish to other things, or sometimes on its own. I like chewing on it a lot because it brings out a sweet flavor.

Honestly I don't wanna read a pastebin but based on what the guy above me said, yeah read what you like. Honestly I've not read a visual novel without glaring problems, but that doesn't stop me from liking many of them, while there are others I just think suck and aren't redeemable from their problems. It's all subjective my opinion on them isn't any more right than anyone else's, and no one else's opinion is any more right than mine or yours.
Read what you like ignore the noise. -
I think the fact that fan translations are still coming is very interesting, considering there's at least some market for translations to make money from. Tsurezurescans (who I do not really know much about) seem to be an anomaly in my mind in that I don't see many people really complaining about quality of translation, and they are working pretty consistently, when fan translations seem to be on the back burner/disappearing.
I honestly appreciate the effort by anyone putting in proper time to put out fan translations, even if they are poor quality, because I don't think they close any doors because there is no license and if they are poor quality then anyone can make a new one still.
That all said there are obviously merits and and demerits to official translation companies. I think ideally larger visual novel companies would themselves expand out from Japan and hire translators to ensure the quality of their products as I'm sure they care more about it and their brand than third party licencors. But as it is we really benefit from having so many companies translating visual novels for the obvious fact there are lots of them that might not get touched otherwise, or at least not for a long time. Though there's obviously the fact that this means if its a machine translation or a busted translation then we might not ever get a good one unless fans are really skirting on copyright infringement to do their own translations or fix the official one. So yeah, good and bad. -
Well honestly I don't feel like there's just one, every visual novel that I really enjoyed I can never get the same experience of reading it for the first time again. If I like it, it always feels like it was once in a lifetime. Every experience below I list is something I can't have again, not the same one in my mind. Maybe there will be some similar to it in the future, but they're all special to me and even if I play them again I cannot recapture the magic I felt reading them.
SpoilerSteins;Gate jumps to mind as my favorite, something where the twists and story can never take me on the same thrill ride of not knowing what'll happen again. By extension I feel the same about Steins;Gate 0, which was every bit as enjoyable because of it's further development of other characters without them being constantly reset by time travel, having the narrative leave Okabe pretty often.
The first Maji Koi is special to me, at least most of the routes are. It was the first sorta waifu select simulator game where I played everyone's routes through to completion and then the final route as well. Of the routes I really enjoyed most I'll never be able to recapture the excitement of the characters clashing and Yamato's relationships with the girls.
Clannad jumps out even though I skipped through some of the routes because there were other routes that touched me and are really special. Obviously the After Story is one of those, but also Misae (more so her backstory with Katsuki) and Tomoyo's routes as well.
Little Busters as a story between friends and of course it's ending is always gonna be a special story for me. Riki was just so lovable along with everyone else, I really liked his growth even if it was Key magic to save everyone in the end.Kamidori is memorable to me for it's gameplay elements, and even though the writing was pretty poor I quite enjoyed the characters and there were lots of cute moments as they all came together.
White Album 2 Introductory is honestly one of my favorite stories, I like all the characters and I like the deceit, betrayals, love shared between the cast, and the ending is so bitter that I only want more. It's really painful not being able to continue reading this through.
Sakura Sakura which I just finished is far from a great visual novel, or even good one in many regards, but it's style and characters were memorable. The thing that really sets it out as a once in a lifetime experience for me though was Nanako's route and Tohru's development through it as their love and relationship grew. Really warmed my heart and I wish there was more.
Katawa Shoujo was my very first visual novel, as it is for many English speakers who got into the medium around it's release I'm sure. I did not go through every route, only Hanako's as it was the one I was most interested in. Her story is heart breaking for me, especially as someone who lost one parent young, I can only partially relate but I completely understand how terrible her struggle and her situation was. Also, I read this before I became involved with Japanese media as a whole really, having watched very few animes besides the shounen on Toonami and even though she's not actually written by a Japanese author and I would never use the term at the time, she was my first "waifu". So not so much just the visual novel here but the pretense to reading it.There are a lot of others, but I figured I would just share some. Everything I read that I really enjoyed is once in a lifetime and has a strong impact on me, maybe I'm just a soft person but... Yeah. Maybe I should keep a list of them all so that if I lose my memory I can experience them all for the first time again. Really I for all of them I just wish there was more or I could experience them for the first time again, they're all once in a life time.

Spoiler
Agreed, though it really doesn't go into that he's running away from his problems in the common route much. I don't remember the common route really talking about his family situation much if at all, and mostly just made it appear like he didn't care for it and really just wanted to meet girls and get away from sports. Not that he was running away, which is why I think it seems to lend itself more towards Sakura's route. Also I think how Nanako's route handles the club is very abrupt, because he was putting a ton of effort into it prior and then he suddenly jsut stops all effort. Maybe that's because his motivation was gone? But that said if his motivation was just Sakura then that again lends the common route to really pushing towards being more apart of Sakura's route because of how big of a piece it was to the common route.
Also I made an edit at the bottom, if you have any recommendations for visual novels like this please lemme know.
-
Well I finally finished and figured I would lay out my thoughts on it.
SpoilerFirst and foremost, I think the structure of this visual novel could have been handled much better. Honestly it felt like Naoki should never have been put in the main character chair and his plots should have just been built off of the original routes and then just continued from them into the One Year Later routes. His common route was a mess because it had to try and appease both canons, and then his characterization felt pretty butchered, especially since you were taken out of his perspective a few times during his route. Worst yet during Sakura (Kirishima)'s one year later route they showed they could easily do a romance for other characters.
Now onto my actual analysis of the routes.
SpoilerThe Common route: It felt like it dragged on at parts, especially early when establishing characters. Sometimes scenes just would not end or move to something new, and it gave me a little disdain for Naoki and Akira especially early on. It went away as the visual novel continued through the common route but it was still annoying. I think a problem the common route suffers from is that the entire build up of the story really pushes towards Sakura (Kirishima)'s route through the whole art club narrative being so focused on. That said I've actually grouped this route as feeling more so like it 'belongs' with Sakura (Kirishima)'s route as part of her story.
Sakura (Kirishima)'s route: What felt to me as the natural progression from the Common route due to the art club subplot being a huge driving force throughout the common route. This route never bores and I wondered if it would ever slow down, because it was just one thing after another pushing for continuous excitement which made it extremely fun. It also gives Tohru his biggest moment as a bad ass in the entire visual novel towards the end of it. What it really lacks however, was character development from Tohru. He didn't reeeeally change over the course of it. In particular his fatal flaw was still ever present throughout the entire route to the ending. A big thing for me though is that this also felt like the natural "conclusion" of Sakura's story by the end of it, and her one year later really not adding much to her story but just building onto the story of the world and other characters. I think I arrived at this because Nanako stops pursuing Tohru of her own agency when she realizes his relationship with Sakura, and by the end of it things are wrapped up pretty nicely. There wasn't any character growth because of this or things that needed to be continued on for the main characters here.
Nanako (Sakura)'s route: This really felt like it's own story and as if it had a different writer or like they did not know how to continue it from the common route to me. It felt like it really went it's own way with things and dropped the art club plot really quickly, which gave it a real disconnect from the common route in a way. And honestly, I don't really mind if common routes have a disconnect from character routes because trying to force them to fit thematically with every character's route (especially in games with more options) is just going to lead to issues. It was just extremely noticeable and odd here because the other route completely builds off of that common route and keeps going, where this one 180s it. That is probably where this route excels however, is from that 180 Tohru receives quite a bit of character development in rekindling a bond with his family and growing to become more decisive. Further, this one did not feel like the ending of the story with it's ending, and left plenty of room for development in the one year later arc. Compared to Sakura (Kirishima)'s route, it is worth noting that it is a lot slower, less action packed, and more grounded over all. It didn't feel like a race of one thing after the other like in Sakura (Kirishima)'s route.
Naoki's Common route: This was a mess and sucked pretty bad. It was an extremely odd choice to suddenly make Naoki the main character, take his face away, take his voice acting away, and them give Tohru a face with eyes and voice acting as he took a back seat. Honestly, with both the Sakura's gone in this route Tohru probably should not have even been there if the intent was to make Naoki the main character, it would've made leaving his relationship ambiguous much easier. Of course, the biggest problem with this route is that it has to fill both canons from the previous two. It really should have just not existed and the character routes stemming from it should have just started off from the original paths in one extended story.
Akira's route: Honestly beyond the overarching problems I had with the entire Naoki as MC section of the game which continue to plague this route, the biggest problem to me was that it felt like very little actually happened. Most of the arc was spent explaining their past together and revelations between the characters about said past, with very little of substance happening in the present. Because of this there was very little dramatic action or tension and nothing in the arc really gripped interest here for me. It was also bogged down by pointless sex scenes every time Naoki and Akira were alone together. Literally any time they were left alone they started going at it like rabbits.
Kurumi's route: I didn't read it after the headache of the common route and Akira's honestly. I've read enough of the visual novel to really determine it wasn't worth my time. Also, just through Naoki's original characterization throughout the common route, him and Kurumi never really felt like they belonged together and Kurumi's affection for him felt forced at best. Maybe the route ended up being good, IDK, but I doubt it.
Sakura (Kirishima)'s One Year After route: There are a few things with this story arc that I want to talk about. First of all, despite it's label the story arc never really feels like it's about Sakura and Tohru but rather just their relationship continuing off from where it was. The real thrust of this arc was about the side characters Moe and Taki and their relationship with Moe running out of time as a student and member of the art club. It was a very good route and I this aspect of it, but everything else seemed a bit superfluous. There were bits of fun between Tohru and Sakura which was good but it still definitely did not seem like their route. I think the biggest take away from this however, was that the writers were perfectly capable of doing relationships /without/ changing the main characters. Which really baffles me about the Naoki routes, where they really should have just left Tohru as our eyes and ears.
Nanako (Sakura)'s One Year After route: This felt like a proper and more necessary continuation of Nanako's original route. I really commend it on concluding Tohru's development where he finally becomes decisive and able to commit to things, and giving closure to Sakura (Kirishima) in it. Coming back to things a year later from where the two characters left off together as well really works here too because you don't miss a year of their relationship which definitely adds to the disconnect in Sakura (Kirishima)'s one year after route. Overall this was probably the best act of the visual novel in my mind because it really does close out on a lot of things and I see why it's suggested to be played last. I think the one fault I can give this and the previous chapter was that Bitou really got sidelined despite how he said "I don't give up easily". Of course Nanako made his choice pretty clear, but early on in the original common route and her route they tried to make it pretty clear how into Nanako, Bitou was. But then he sort of just disappears from trying to pursue her after the marriage rejection and saying he doesn't give up easy. I just feel like they should have done more with that since it was set up.Now for my overall thoughts and impressions, as well as my closing remarks towards it.
SpoilerI think the structure really holds this visual novel back in a lot of ways. I believe the style of almost no narration outside of sex scenes was performed quite well and applaud this aspect of it, but there were just too many other mistakes made. The whole Naoki section should not have been done from his perspective, or had a common route. Sakura (Kirishima)'s route should not have just had Nanako disappear from the narrative on her own or at least should have had some other way for Naoki to overcome his indecisiveness as a character. Overall I think both routes did things well and some other things poorly, and they really felt like they were written by different people. If you have more questions about why it felt like the common route and Nanako's route felt so disconnected I can give some more examples if you ask, but I feel like I went on about that enough here already. I know this is sort of the thing with visual novels, that you can't have everything happen or come full circle between different routes without their being a "true" route, but because of this it definitely left something to be desired from both routes. You really miss out on the characterization of half the cast between choosing either route, which ultimately hurts the visual novel in my eyes. Especially in Sakura (Kirishima)'s route, though to a degree in Nanako's route as well.
Despite all these problems with the visual novel I really enjoyed it and was sad it was over, but at the same time happy for Tohru and Nanako being engaged and in that route Tohru being able to become friends with Sakura because he overcame his fatal flaw of indecisiveness. I wish there was more honestly, because I feel like again Nanako's route leaves a lot open for stories about their future together. Does Tohru go to college, try to do something with Kendo, join the work force? Who knows. I wish there could have been some sort of true route which made it not feel like you were missing half of the characters depending on which you choose, but that's the medium for ya. I do almost want to call Nanako's route a psuedo true route because it resolves Sakura Kirishima's character during it as well, without just quickly sidelining her, and leads to Tohru reaching his "peak" potential at any point in the story, in terms of growth. It's the path where he's truly most changed and the best off in I feel.
In terms of route order, based on how I group them this is my order from best to worst.
1. Nanako's Route + Nanako's One Year After
2. Common Route + Sakura's Route
3. Sakura's One Year After
4. Akira's Route
5. Naoki's Common Route
?. Kurumi's Route
If you read all this thanks for reading and I definitely recommend checking this visual novel out if you're interested.Edit: If you have any recommendations for visual novels similar to this please lay them on me. I want more.

Hmm... you have some fair points here. That made me thinking. Maybe really my standards were lowered after SukiSuki
Because, like I said earlier, to me even those more fanservicey scenes from Akira's route felt like sweet sweet love compared to that almost mechanical fucking in SukiSuki. But when rethinking the whole thing - yep, one or two could have been omitted. If all-ages version was made like Sanoba (cutting only the sex itself) I'd probably prefer it, but it cuts much more, and there are gaping holes left after that.
And I agree that first Sakura's and Nanako's scenes were much better.
Yeah, I haven't played SukiSuki so I really can't comment on it haha. Honestly though I think they just botched it trying to write Naoki's story in general. At least in Akira's route it just feels like it wasn't needed, and the common route is just a struggle to read. I mean it didn't really feel like anything happened, beyond them resolving things from their past which weren't really foreshadowed anywhere in the main game making them feel even a bit shoehorned. But that said, of course Akira's sex scene(s) are gonna be worse considering the entire section seemed worse off for all the reasons I mentioned. Maybe I'm too critical on them specifically.

2 minutes ago, adamstan said:
Ah, now I see. I didn't perceive it that way - for me relationships between characters were more important than the "plot" so that's probably why I was okay with it.
Well the plot of this game is the growth in the relationships between characters, the sex scenes mostly after the first don't feel like they added anything to that though and just got in the way of actual character progression.
Lemme put it this way, what actually happened to make them at all meaningful? Nothing really. There wasn't anything to justify them as meaningful or purposeful and were really just fan service-y. This is as opposed to the first two in the first two routes, they are justified by the struggles and hardships the characters went through together to get to that point. Akira's first one doesn't even really feel that "earned" since it comes only like 10 minutes afters the common route concludes. -
Just now, adamstan said:
But isn't it somewhat natural? That characters are seeking comforting through physical intimacy? I have to admit that while the scenes were numerous, they didn't feel too much tacked-on to me, at least compared to some other titles I played.
Maybe I just don't play as many with really tacked on ones I guess? At least in Akira's route they were happening literally every other time Naoki and her had any revelation about one another. Kind of annoying when it continually stops the plot like that. From what I saw going through Kurumi's it seemed a bit more well spaced out, with one being saved for completely after.

After stories have lots of sex too
That's why Nanako's and Sakura's routes had only one (or one-and-a-half in case of Nanako) h-scene each - they saved it for the epilogue, while in case of Kurumi and Akira they had to squeeze it al into the routes, as they have no after stories.
Actually h-scenes in Sakura Sakura didn't bother me too much. Maybe because still they were more tactful than in SukiSuki that I played before
And I liked Kurumi's route, it had some really nice bits. Try it - and if h-scenes will become annoying, skip just them. (I wouldn't recommend switching to all-ages version in this case, as it skips too much).
I might go back to it later but as of right now I'm just skipping through most of her route, and extra tacked on sex scenes are okay with me once the conflict is all resolved. But when they are peppered through every few scenes while one of the major conflicts is still on going it gets on my nerves. Which is why I'm glad there was just the one in the first arc, and am okay with more in the epilogue.
What are you playing?

Chaos;Head, on my way reading through the series (I already read Steins;Gate and 0 a while back).
It was pretty good, I get a lot of the decisions they made though the more focus on fantasy definitely makes it stand out compared to Steins;Gate and the first half of Robotics;Notes that I've read so far.
What started out as a simple murder mystery, I already knew was going to develop into much more. There of course was going to be some grand conspiracy plot in it, and really it was just figuring out what that was. At some point, several chapters in, I kind of stopped caring about that aspect though. They were definitely alluding to it throughout, but it took backseat to the absolute trainwreck of a person that the protagonist was. This aspect of the story was both a big problem for it, but also it's greatest strength. We experienced his mental state and just how fucked he felt first hand because of how much focus was put on the isolation of the character. It wouldn't be strange to say that the first 3-4 chapters, 75%+ of it is spent with the main character alone and no other characters on screen or in the conversation. It helped bring to life the isolation and just how alone he was. Not knowing what was real either, never knowing if we could trust our narrator or what was going on around him. Was he the killer? Why was he being targeted? Did he have precognition? Or was it some sort of other power? I do think that this piece drags on for too long, our main character ultimately ends up passive and without agency for almost the entire first 9 chapters. The only time he does something of his own will is when he goes to save Nanami on the rooftop.
Every character he met betraying him at some point further built upon the isolation our protagonist had, and I definitely felt the weight of it each time. This was probably the crux of what made the main character's paranoia and otherwise inability to do anything on his own bearable. That it really did seem like everyone was out to get him. It made it at least somewhat believable that despite all these people who could help explain the situation of things to him, that had these weird powers around him that he knew about. It was annoying and frustrating because of how long this dragged on, but at least it was understandable to a degree from the perspective of our protagonist.
I think where the plot really fell flat however was in taking so long to make some major plot reveals. It wasn't until late in the game that we started learning all the heroine's back stories, and learning more about just who our protagonist was. I feel this needed to be sprinkled in more, because it made the visual novel very distinctive. A lot of the scifi elements were dropped at this point and it became far more fantastical as the truths began to reveal, too, which isn't a bad thing, just an observation. The growth of our main character I feel should have came sooner, or been more built up on. Because they literally broke him before he suddenly gained the power to become better, and we only get to see this transformed protagonist for the last 3 hours of a 30 hour experience. And even in that time he is getting broken again for a duration of it.
On the topic of the heroines, I thought they were all really well fleshed out and enjoyable. I read more into their routes and saw them develop more from those, which were sad but I got a better understanding of just how messed up and broken everyone was. I felt Yua's awakening was pointless, just a bit of fan service perhaps but really no reason for it. Or because 'we need the 7 swords' even though none of them really help in the ending. Which also didn't make the most sense. Sena at least should have been able to come along and help fight.
Overall I really liked it anyway, it does what it wants to well even if it goes overboard with it. I wish there was more to these characters and their story, Love Chu Chu isn't translated though and any other appearance they make seem to be minor. I don't expect much expanded media for them either simply due to this being the first and somewhat forgotten of the series (no translation beyond the fan one).
