  1. I want to know as well. I have a lot of free time due to several reasons, and I still don't read as much as I would like.

These days it takes me months to finish something.

My attention span/focus has been worsening over the years, and I sadly don't wear glasses (I need them ASAP), so it is actually a challenge for me to read for a long period.

I think that people probably read VNs during the weekends, and for hours on end. They must find some time during work/school days too.

30 min-1h at least - you'd need energy and concentration though, which is difficult to have if you work or study full-time.

It will take you ages to finish something like Clannad at this pace (reading for 1-2 hours at most).

That is the biggest reason why I haven't tackled very long VNs to this day.

I remember trying to play Clannad in 2014 but I gave up due to length. I want to give it another chance, but it will take a while as I have a huge backlog.

I can't read for more than 2 hours straight unless it's something really gripping or if it's on Wikipedia or TVTropes.

Another issue is ergonomics. Sitting on a chair for a long time sucks. I've been using computers for more than a decade and I developed scoliosis because of this.

I appreciate games that have mobile ports or that are portable in some way, such as Ace Attorney, because I can lay down in bed.

  2. I won't answer your question because it has already been answered.

Just gonna ramble for a bit...

I wish there were more visual novels with gameplay that are translated, but they are a niche of a niche, so I understand why there aren't many.

I enjoy small gameplay elements such as in VA11 HALL-A where you make a drink and talk to people. The "mini-game" doesn't distract you too much.

I'm not necessarily looking for RPGs because most of the time I don't have patience for them. I do like them, but it really depends on my mood. My best friend is an RPG fanatic though.

For some reason, the VNs with gameplay always involve strategy/tactics, and I was never good with that.

I remember trying out Kamidori Alchemy Meister years ago, but I didn't stick with it, and I don't remember anything about it. I'll probably give it a try again one day.

Littlewitch Romanesque seems to have interesting gameplay.

I wish dating sims had more to do other than raise stats.

I kinda liked LovePlus, but the characters lacked depth and since there was next to no storyline, after I conquered my favourite girl I stopped playing because there was no point.

I also really want an adventure game with a good story and choices that matter. Something like "Always Sometimes Monsters" but better.

The Legend of Heroes is an RPG series with a crapload of text. Maybe you'd like that.

  3. I've been looking for the same thing for years now. There are some good recommendations here, and some games which I didn't know much about if anything.

I didn't remember that the guy from Killer Queen was depressed...

The protagonist from Leaves has some sort of existential angst. I don't really recommend Leaves though, it's average at best, and it is not only short but a kinetic novel.

I sort of liked it but it's nothing special.

The MC from Asphyxia (yuri, OELVN) is depressed too.

    Maaaaybe Air Pressure (OELVN)?

    Thanks. I'll add it later.

Well, I fotgot to add yuri titles in this list.

Man, itch.io is LGBT, otome heaven.

Not surprising, Western VN developers tend to be women (unless you count those guys who make 3D pre-rendered VNs), and those same women aren't afraid to discuss LGBT issues in detail.

I would like to comment on Teaching Feeling. It's an ok game to pass the time, but it is not fleshed out as Princess Maker for example, and there is barely any story. I don't think there is even an ending. So it is not really a visual novel per se.

https://vndb.org/v26444 was released only a few days ago and I want to check it out. Apparently there is only a single heroine and it is a yuri game. It is set in Hong Kong in the 80s (interesting setting).

I don't know many VNs with a single heroine that aren't listed here - this kind of thing always reminds me of Date Ariane, which is an old browser game by Ariane B. Yes, the main character is the developer herself. The game is somewhat entertaining to be honest.

I often thought about it. I feel like in many aspects (relationships included) I haven't grown up, whatever that means.

I haven't either. I will be 22 this year - but I have lived a very sheltered life due to many reasons, three of them being:

    1. My Asperger's, which leads me to being awful at socialisation, having niche hobbies that nobody cares about, etc (I am getting slightly better but not much).

    2. My overprotective family

    3. Improper education - left school early... long story.

So for me, teen/coming-of-age stories in general offer some kind of comfort. It's not as if I was living life vicariously through the characters but close to it.

I don't know how to explain, but I see the characters as almost being real. I don't self-insert, so I know I am just an observer.

But I relate to their woes, personality, etc. In fact, it infuriates me with some TV shows for example where they change a character too much, and they seem like a whole different person.

A weird paradox: I kind of feel bad when consuming this kind of media sometimes. It makes me feel even more like a failure when I compare my life to what's going on screen.

I have very few friends and I have issues communicating with them, and I've had trouble with relationships, yada, yada, yada...

I tried to go out more, do things that I wasn't used to and even appeal to a more hedonistic side, but it's not my thing.

What happens in a film or book might not be so cool in real life.

    Answering OP's question:

I'm a young adult so this hasn't hit me yet. If it changes things, I am mostly attracted to guys.

And I gotta say, there are some handsome guys in VNs... one of them being Aoi from Konosora.

I do find him cute and he's supposed to be a high schooler. He looks about 17-18.

Am I a pervert for thinking that? I don't know. It is a bit weird sometimes, if you think about it.

Someone said that students in VNs often act more mature and Aoi is a prime example of that. It's nice.

With the waifus, my interest in them comes from their personalities and behaviour more than appearance.

I tend to dislike heavy moe art styles too.

I've had friends thinking that I'm strange for finding fictional, drawn characters attractive, but it's always been this way for me.

When I was a kid, I was attracted to Lion-O from Thundercats lol.

Maybe your eyes are better than mine ;) I mean, I can read it, but I feel like I'm straining my eyes. The problem I have is with the border/shade around the letters. It should be black and crisp/sharp, but somehow it always looks like there was some kind of interpolation/scaling applied to it, even though I'm playing the game in the window mode in its native resolution. The edges are somewhat blurry and the contrast is poor. The rest of the screen (background, sprites, menu text) looks okay. I'll post screenshot once I get back to it.

My vision actually sucks! I need glasses as I have astigmatism and a bit of myopia.

Yeah, I opened the game again and the font really is kind of blurry. My memory was faulty.

Making * Lovers is supposed to run at 1280x720 or lower. Anything higher, and the text gets distorted.

    You're running windowed mode, right?

It looks sharper at that resolution, but still not 100%. I don't know if there's anything you can do about that.

Changing text box transparency could help... I don't know.

There may be a way to override this by messing with your graphics card's options.

Sadly, mine is integrated and the Intel control panel isn't working as it should...

    Good luck.

And in regards to the blinking sprites, yeah, I think they're really cool. I found out that The Most Forbidden Love In The World has some animation too.

(At least the 2018 re-release and the MangaGamer translation.)

    I just started playing this.

Man, the text is somehow really hard on my eyes - no matter which font I choose, it's kind of blurred and with some weird shading/transparency or whatever. Very hard to read.

On the positive side - sprites with blinking animations :D

That's strange. Can you post a screenshot? I could read it alright.

And yes, the blinking sprites are pretty cool, although some blink infrequently.

yeah, try looking for heroines who are WHORES!

i legit was gonna just say im kidding but typing that reminded me of one in crescendo... its the prostitute, she has probably the best route in the game. also theres do you like horny bunnies 2 with an old flame.

wish there was more experienced women as well as mc but

Wouldn't mind a prostitute heroine/hero. There are very few VNs with that sort of thing. At least in English.

I know that in VA11 HALL-A there is a prostitute character.

The only other thing I can think of is The Men of Yoshiwara which I haven't read yet.

    https://vndb.org/v15231

Even rarer is the sex worker MC.

In regards to sexually experienced protagonists, there is this tag:

Dude I've already played so many vns in 800x600 I don't care about resolution but I'd want to see vns with high quality

    I see.

Maybe Grisaia offers this option? I don't know, never played it.

There's this one, but, from what I know, it's pretty popular and far from being obscure. I don't know, there may be some other VN like that.

That wasn't it. That one looks good though. It will probably be translated if it's popular.

Not obscure at all, but I wish KimiKiss was translated too. https://vndb.org/v1187

I didn't know about Rui wa Tomo o Yobu. Add that one to the list ;)

    https://vndb.org/v776

I'd make a case for otomege but I don't know which ones are good and which ones aren't. There should just be more of them in English.

No, thank you is not slice of life, trust me...

Ah, I see. I haven't played it yet. Thanks for the heads up!

I wish there were more slice of life BL games. If I could read Japanese I would buy Kintouka.

BTW, if you enjoyed Camp Buddy there is Bacchikoi (not sure if you can get it anymore), and Sleepover from the same developers.

    Off-topic: You're from Brazil? Me too. ^^

  12. I'm not sure if this will count as spam or not since I was the only one to post on this thread.

The game requires Windows 7 SP1. I have it but for some reason I was getting this error.

I managed to solve the issue.

    You have to:

    1. Either install Windows6.1-KB2670838 from the official Microsoft website or:

    2. Open Registry Editor (regedit) and go to HKEY_USERS\(random numbers)\Software\Mangagamer\The Most Forbidden Love In The World

Change the string on "Disable Dialog" to 1.

  13. Oh, I just remembered that there is a dating sim called Coming Out on Top. I believe the MC is in college or something.

Bara genre, so you get scruffy guys instead of feminine boys, but I heard it is quite good.

I wasn't able to run it unfortunately.

Another bara game would be No, Thank You!! - from what I gather it is dramatic slice of life with comedy elements. The protagonist is already an adult, though.

(I don't like his appearance for some reason).

what the hell? Japanese prefer to group and pay for discussing VN than using a forum? Is this for real?

Yeah, I mean, it is the predecessor to 4chan. 4chan is free with ads, but to make new threads and respond to them in 5ch you need premium.

At least that's the information I was able to gather. I never knew how to get around in that website anyway. There exists a clone of 2ch http://2ch.sc/2ch.html.

    No eroge board though.

I was able to find Japanese subreddits, but they are overrun with spam. I just checked.

If there's a Japanese Discord where they discuss H-games, I am not aware of it.

What the hell? The eroge board refuses to open for me, I knew it, but why?

I guess I'll need a vpn but I don't know where and how to use those...

Then it must be IP blocked in Europe and North America. I wouldn't be able to help you with a VPN because I don't normally use them.

I just read that they don't work well with 5ch anyway.

I have tried free services before but they are astoundingly slow, and not all of them let you have a fake Japanese IP.

Apparently, to even make posts in 5ch you have to pay. Sucks.

I think Lynne might have some of that grimy urban atmosphere, not sure if it's what you're after though lol since this would be a musical descendent at best - you can listen here https://sleepyagents.bandcamp.com/album/lynne-ost

Beside the musical aspect, it's set in rundown, low class England and you can feel it. The graphics match as well.

I've heard praise for Ebi-hime's works. Looks pretty cool.

I'll look around and see if I can find anything else.

  17. I am into Boys' Love as well. There are very few works translated and the ones that are have hardcore elements.

Gakuen Heaven 2 has bishounen and is set in a boarding school. It is fully translated.

I cannot attest for its quality since I haven't read it yet, but it looks like a lighthearted game.

Camp Buddy was good. Sadly I don't have my save file anymore.

I think you'd enjoy Dramatical Murder. Not a school setting, but it is high quality yaoi.

I remember 5ch prevents foreigner to go in, how did you access it?

I just clicked on the link for the official website and it opened. It's been more than 5 years since I went to 2ch/5ch so I wasn't aware it had changed names and layout.

Since my Japanese is atrocious, I don't even know if I'm on the right page, but I can see posts.

  19. You want something like Samurai Champloo, Boondocks and Afro Samurai. Sadly, there are no other anime like them, much less visual novels. I've looked.

I wanted to find something urban. I was born in the city so I love this kind of atmosphere. Concrete jungle.

There is Collage. It uses real pictures, the story is decent and the soundtrack is nice, if not a bit repetitive - the songs are loops taken from the Internet. Not hip hop, though.

Where did you find punk and heavy metal VNs? I know about Kira Kira and that was awesome.

I wasn't expecting Sex Pistols and Kamen Rider references (I also love tokusatsu).

There's also Rock Robin but I haven't played it, and Love, Money and Rock 'n' Roll is not out yet.

Your best bet would be waiting for an OELVN developer to create a hip-hop themed game. They have original and interesting ideas sometimes, you know?

Maybe read graphic novels. I can't recommend any that fit the criteria but you should be able to find something via Google search.
