Thanks for the suggestions guys. These give me something to start from. A few people have mentioned Grisaia no Kajitsu so I will definitely look into that. Also ayakshibito and Sharin no Kuni look really promising. Time for some research!

I've recently started reading visual novels. I've finished muv luv, g senjou maou and the first part of Umineko. Out of those I've really like Umineko but decided to hold off after the first part because I left g senjou maou half finished. I've just finished that novel and I am looking to start something new. I really liked Umineko because the writing and characters are well developed. I also liked that they included adults with relevant story plots and play a substantial role in the game. This brings me to one of my main complaints with other visual novels. Usually, the parents of main protagonists are either conveniently out of town on business or dead. The main point is that I like mature complicated characters and plot. I can stomach slice of life but would prefer a constantly moving story line with thoughtful and meaningful characters. Additionally, I do not like the harem aspects of many of modern visual novels. Ideally I would just like a good story but if it can't be helped I can read the harem parts. Sorry this was long. I am definitely enjoying my time with visual novels but I am having problems finding what suits my tastes. Please recommend something
