krill Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 when i play games i almost always listen to one of my playlists that i made for the purpose of playing to game too. with some games if i like the sound of the ost i will listen to that instead but its rare. so what about you guys do you only use the ost? or do you play your own music? do you have a preference? if you use your own music what kind do you usually play as you game? sirjabberwock 1 Quote
Yuuko Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I usually have my 23 hour love live music playlist on whatever I'm doing Quote
Nosebleed Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Unless the game has a really cool soundtrack I'll just listen to my own music because otherwise game soundtracks tend to get repetitive after a while. Â Unless I'm playing shitty mobile idol games. Quote
Satsuki Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Depend on which game. I play a lot of game that listening to sound is essential, like FPS or MOBA, so I rarely play music. With other games, I just play whatever I feel like listening too. Quote
Eclipsed Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Games own ost I'll use my music for like League though Quote
Cyrillej1 Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 nope, never really listened to my own music while gaming. Â I just listen to the game's ost. Quote
Turnip Sensei Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Always the game's own music, it somehow feels really weird listening to something else. Exception is when I play dota with friends, then we have plug.dj open and I use it to force J-pop and anime music on my friends. Quote
Thunderbro Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I usually listen to the game's ost. The exception is if I'm playing an mmo, then I might belt out some playlists. Quote
OriginalRen Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Both. After I play a game and sound is no longer important, I listen to my own music. Preferably Virtual Riot, Adhesive Wombat, Televisor, or Rundfunk. A demo: Â Quote
Tesla Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 If it's the game's own ost is not needed or if it's just bland I'll usually just play a Monstercat playlist or August Burns Red pandora station. Quote
monkeysrumble Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I usually always listen to the games OST. The only time I could ever imagine myself not is if the games OST is just genuinely terrible. Â Though sometimes when I play smash bros I listen to records because why the hell not. Quote
sub-zer0 Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 definitely the game ost, listening to it is part of playing the game, and for maximum experience, you got to have headphones on Quote
bogdankl Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 i have 2 categories of games i play, either i play a vn and ofc listen to the soundtrack and voice acting or i play something like monster hunter or dark souls or a fps, in which case i play music, news, podcasts, creepypastas, everything i need to listen to  there's nothing like getting you're head ripped of by a rathalos while listening to totalbiscuits soothing voice krill 1 Quote

Nosebleed Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 I still remember some PS2 motorcycle game I had that had an entire Slipknot album as part of its soundtrack, can't say i ever got tired of doing backflips while feeling like I'm summoning Satan. But if it's just generic looping music it eventually just wears out as you play through it several times, even if it's beautifully crafted. Quote
sirjabberwock Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Theere have been several VNs in which I really enjoyed the OST and there have been others that made me palm me face. I love listening to my own stuff when playing video games though. I'm a huge music fan so music is a big part of my every day life... It's no surprise that my love for it tranfers over to gaming Quote
Dark Ariel7 Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 I never ever listen to music when playing a Vn or even a normal game. I think it takes you out of the immersion. SFX and ost are important for setting the mood. Besides I'm more reading than really "playing" anything. I want to be able to concentrate on my reading. Lyrical music gets in the way of that. Quote
Decay Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 I listen to my own music if I'm playing something something like a moba or hearthstone. Or sometimes with strategy games like xcom or civilization. I'll listen to the game's soundtrack for everything else. It helps for immersion, I trust the designers to use the right music to put you in the right mood for whatever you're doing. This goes for RPGs, open world games, action games, etc. They know best, and I'm not going to be so presumptuous as to overrule them on that, potentially worsening the experience for myself. Quote
Deep Blue Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 I can't play listening to any music (except for the music of the game itself ) it just pulls my away from the immersion of the game. Quote
Kenshin_sama Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Depends. If I'm making consistent progression in the game, I'll listen to its ost. If I'm grinding something for a long period of time (more than 1 hour), I'll listen to my own. Quote
Getsuya Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 RPGs/VNs: In-game music MMOs: I'll either be watching a Let's Play in another window or listening to a book on tape... I feel like I'm always wasting time playing an MMO if I'm not doing at least one other thing at the same time. Yeah I don't play MMOs much anymore FPS: I used to listen to Disney songs when I played these, but I haven't played an FPS in a while. They used to be fun when I was still living with my parents and the wanton bloodshed was thrilling because I felt so naughty playing them, but now I can't really get in to any game that doesn't have a plot that hooks me so I tend to avoid FPSes except for a rare few with great stories in which case I usually use in-game music to preserve the atmosphere Quote
Kenshin_sama Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 FPS: I used to listen to Disney songs when I played these, but I haven't played an FPS in a while. Quote
Getsuya Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Considering my Disney CD selection at the time consisted mainly of either Lion King or Oliver and Company... yeah that's probably exactly what happened. Though it probably wasn't people I was shooting. Military shooters weren't a big thing at the time, so it was more about shooting monsters or aliens. Quote
Kenshin_sama Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Okay then... I guess that was a bit longer than I expected. Still, props to ya for that choice of music. I mostly listen to catchy J-pop songs. Quote
Rabbit Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Like most it seems, it depends, some games I leave it to the game, aspecially games with story where people may suddenly start talking, and if i'm playing a fps competetive or playing to win i usually listen for footsteps so music is a big no no, and if the music is good/fitting like Trials of evolution I just listen to theirs. Â Tho for other games where music barly matters I listen to my own. Quote
