Decay Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 A thoroughly negative point of view, but nothing we don't already expect from the mainstream. Most people have their preconceptions about porn based on the western porn industry. And everyone also has their preconceptions about "porn with story" thanks to the god-awful faff that overly-ambitious western porn directors occasionally produce. Nothing but experience, either firsthand or secondhand from people they trust, will convince people that their preconceptions are wrong. VirginSmasher 1 Quote
Nosebleed Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 You lose my interest the moment you use Winged Cloud as a benchmark. Quote
Kawasumi Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 We really shouldnt blame this company for thinking that way about eroge because its so niche that it is and it requires you to dive into it a lot more. There is some others that should take the blamereadies pitchforks outside winged clouds headquarters Quote
Nimbus Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 The fact that a Winged Cloud game was the only example of a vn shows how little they actually researched that part of the segment, and as a media student, I find that incredibly frustrating! Suzu Fanatic, Kawasumi and VirginSmasher 3 Quote

I would say that it pains me that Eroges are looked at and generalized like that from outsiders´ points of view, but honestly, it doesn´t. The truth is that a large amount of these games are amazing, and we all know it. And thats enough. If you are actually so close minded that you just look at one bad title, say this genre is garbage and move on, well then thats your loss. Of course it is a shame to see negative press around VNs, but I think that the abundance of good titles will speak for themselves. If someone actually gives titles like Grisaia a try, I am sure that a lot of them would change their mind rather quickly. Quote
Soulless Watcher Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 A news site reporting on something they have no fucking idea about and creating their report from preconceptions and pandering to the general audience..... that's shocking. Quote
Pabloc Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Yeah, that video met my expectations. What he said is actually true, but only for Western porn games. They are all shit, almost no exceptions. That's why I like Japanese eroge (not limited to VNs).Also, that's one of the reasons why I hate all that Sakura crap. Its """quality""" is similar to crude Western porn (well... because it is crude Western porn), but retards bring it up as an example of a Japanese eroge. XReaper 1 Quote
sanahtlig Posted December 9, 2015 Author Posted December 9, 2015 (edited) We really shouldnt blame this company for thinking that way about eroge because its so niche that it is and it requires you to dive into it a lot more.Or they could, you know, actually talk to fans and get an insider's point of view. But I suppose even finding savvy fans would require some effort, as casual Steam users would just point you at the Sakura series. The entire VN scene we're familiar with is kind of invisible to the average Internet user due to lack of (decent) media coverage. Media swarms like pests, so you either get way too much coverage (think paparazzi) or none at all.Although this is mostly a problem of knowing what terms to search on. If you don't have the terms "eroge" or "visual novel" at your disposal, searching is going to be rough. Yet they clearly knew what an eroge was, at least, so a cursory search should've revealed the better games. Edited December 9, 2015 by sanahtlig Quote
Suzu Fanatic Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Thing is, pieces like that aren't aiming for "fair" or a insiders point of view. It's meant to be inflammatory and get their mainstream audience riled up. Quote
sanahtlig Posted December 9, 2015 Author Posted December 9, 2015 (edited) Or, to put it another way--the only coverage eroge will ever get is as the butt a joke, because that's the only way people are comfortable talking about them. As a result, the games that are funniest to talk about will rise to the top of the heap because they get the most attention. Games like the Sakura series.Lovely how our entertainment culture works. Virality has become far more important than quality or value or even how much people like a game. Edited December 9, 2015 by sanahtlig Quote

This is almost as stupid as when CNN made that story that all anime was child porn. Shows how much research is put into things that news stations don't understand. Quote
