That kind of thing is pretty typical with companies that produce a lot of the same generalized type of game...

This is a very common thing to do. It's both a bonus and a short cut. Why create new character designs from scratch when you already have designs that are comprehensive from previous works, and including them is seen as paying homage to previous works and enjoyed as an Easter egg by readers.
