Aceage Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Hello, I am Aceage. I live in Canada and I am a big visual novel and anime fan. I’ve played a number of VNs and my favorite ones are Muv-Luv Alternative, Ever 17, Remember 11, Fate/Stay Night and G Senjou no Maou. To me those games are amazing pieces of art on par with the greatest books. I definitely prefer thrilling plot-based games as opposed to slice of life Ren’Ai focused ones. Obviously I love sex and romance but I can’t stand boring and vapid plot lines. If you could have those things in a game that also had crazy plot-twists and kept you on the edge of your seat wouldn’t that be the best of both worlds? Maybe its because I’m slightly older but the idea of having a fictional 2d 17-year old Japanese girlfriend is slightly less exciting now then when I was 17, now that I’m 24 and have had actual relationships with actual girls (although I am sadly currently single, /cry). So while the wish fulfillment of having multiple beautiful girls fall in love with you in Ren’Ai games is nice, I require more from the plot than just that to really draw me in. A few of my favorite Animes include Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero, Death Note, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Kanon, Code Geass, Mawaru Penguindrum, Another, Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai, and One Piece. In the most recent season I really enjoyed Kakumeiki Valvrave. I do have a guilty pleasure in Bishoujo shows. I’ll be honest, you would be hard pressed to find a Bishoujo anime that I haven’t either watched or at least tried out and decided it was boring. I prefer serious drama with real feelings to silly ecchi comedies with harem endings. However, when they do have real endings, somehow the girl I root for in harem shows never seems to get chosen. Maybe its because I like to root for the underdog, but the heroine who I decide would make the perfect girlfriend and is most worthy of the main character’s love always gets tragically ignored. I also hate it when they give away which girl gets chosen because she gets a few more seconds of airtime in the opening than the others. I give major props to shows where the MC ends up with a girl I don’t expect because I like surprises. VNs are great because you can control your own destiny and not watch helplessly as the MC makes a big mistake. Before I played VNs I watched a couple of shows that had been adapted from games like Shuffle! and Da Capo, and have since sworn not to repeat my mistake and play the games first in all cases. As far as translations go I am a hardcore purist. I think that all dubs are evil and I prefer subs that have as literal a translation as possible and include as many Japanese words and phrases as possible. In an ideal world I wouldn’t need to use subs, but I’m not at that stage yet. However, I know enough Japanese to tell when the subs aren’t being straight with me and I don’t like it. The number one game I want translated in the future is Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. Thanks for reading. Quote

Aceage Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 Please don't start a Dub vs sub war >_< I had one yesterday with batman :P/>/> Sorry, I didn't mean to start a war. Instead I was trying to express how much I appreciate reading excellent translations from groups like Amaterasu, Mirror Moon, Lemnisca, UTW, etc. High quality translations from these groups really takes my enjoyment of a work to the next level. Thanks for welcoming me people. Quote

garejei Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 As a translator I disagree with certain things you said but welcome to the forums nonetheless. Hope you have fun around here. Quote
Fox_DL Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 How do you feel about people using English translated titles for anime? Does it annoy you as much as it does me? Ooh! ooh! I want to give my own answer to that.. I have minimal problems with anime but with Korean and Japanese dramas, I really wanna flip every table I see because reviews for a certain show I'm interested in never bother to include the English title. It's a chronic ailment of mainstream TV here in the Philippines. Even the names (except for the male and female leads) of the characters are even changed so the masses will be able to relate more.. PS: A lot of people here use English 1st names but the last names are Hispanic; also, because of the surge in popularity of Korean and Japanese shows, some have already given their children Korean and Japanese names Quote
