Can't help you as I'm not an otaku.  I've only ever watched four anime series (.hack//Sign, .hack//Roots, Full Metal Alchemist, FMA: Brotherhood), and read one manga (FMA).  I read VNs for the same reason I play RPGs, I love a good story to the point that I won't play a game that has no story or a story I don't like.

 

Yes, I know I'm just in denial.  Shut up.
