See, I don't view it from a literary perspective, I look at it from a personal perspective, as if they actually have thoughts and feelings (yes I know they don't really, I'm not crazy :P) - rather then simply being plot devices and tropes. Would you consider her weak if she was a real girl? That kind of thing. She may seem "boring", but if being boring is being a loyal friend and caring to a fault - despite her always being treated like shit - i'll take boring any day.

"every other character had a history and complex relatioinships with other characters....."

I guess if you want to look at it from a technical perspective, as just a piece of writing, then sure - but real people don't always have such colorful backgrounds, a lot of the time they are boring and have zero past worth writing about, and yet people find reasons to like them anyway. I soppose it's a matetr of perspective, when I read a VN, or watch an anime - I subconciously flick on a empathy switch inside me for the characters involved, as if they were real - I find it a more engaging story if I can empathize with them, and feel for their situations.

It's like how I game - I can't play a bad guy in games because I feel bad for the npcs, lol...

If she was a real girl I would urge her to see a psychologist, the object of her affection is constantly harassing her and beating on her. Yet, even after all these years she still hangs around him simply because she dosn't know life without him. She is in dangerof becoming one of those hillbilly domestic abuse victims you see on COPS who never press charges despite their husbands' repeatedly punching them in the eyes, always screaming, "I can't leave him, I love him!".

I read VNs and watch anime to escape reality, if I wanted to interact with normal people I would actually talk with my classmates. When I watch/read my fiction I do so in order to see people thrust into extrodinary situations. I couldn't care less if they find happiness or not, I simply enjoy watching them struggle. However, when a character is "normal" the spectacle draws attention away from the character and the story becomes slasheresque or like James Cameron's Avatar. So in the end I suppose it really does come down to differing perspectives.

Fair enough :)

You may scoff at this - but age may be a factor too, I'm far older then a lot of the average users here, so I've seen a fair amount. I've met alot of people, and said goodbye to alot of people; something about life experience sticks with you, even when doing something as simple as reading a story.

But ultimately it is as you say, a matter of perspective. <3

Shinji from fate probably, thought this may be in part because I read heavens feel recently.

one of my favorite moments in the anime was his death at Berserker hands. The only thing I regretted was how quick it was, why couldn't Berserker keep up his Karsa Orlong impression when killing him, Type moon has shown some other vary unpleasant deaths. And why would Rin save him in the UBW route? she should have just had saber destroy the thing whith him in it instead of risking her life to save him
