Kantai Collection (?)

I hope this is the right subforum for this...

But lately I've been seeing a lot of people talking about Kantai Collection. From what I've gathered from quick browser gme, it looks like "ship" girls (so I'm guessing it's similar in novelty to Strike Witches???).

Short of that, any help figuring what this thing is would be much appreciated. All I know is that it has been getting a bit of hype as of late.
