Visual Novel reader only displays japanese text/translation???

I've tried dozens of tutorials. Some old some bad. No matter what I do, when I use Visual novel reader to translate a visual novel that does NOT have English subs, I only get Japanese text in the "translation box"

Perhaps I missed something. Not sure. But here is a screenshot what's going on.
