mitchhamilton Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 With any medium there are bound to be certain similarities between works in that medium and vn's are no exception. the heroine with an unnamed disease with no cure except the mc's massive, thick, love, the walking in on a girl while shes changing, the running into a heroine down the hall, all that jazz. which one are you just sick of seeing these days? ill tell you mine, the unnamed disease one! heroine is sick with something that is never named but its going to kill her one day. she never takes meds, she goes to school everyday, pretty much does everything she can to make sure this disease kills her! that or just bad writing to make you feel sympathy for this girl. that and the useless mc. sure he does some good things every now and again, run in to save the girl in a fight that he has no chance in, tell the girl nice things so she instantly falls in love with him. maybe its the instant fall in love thing i hate. like, have you never had anyone of the opposite sex be nice to you? well, those are a few of mine, how about yours? kokoro Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 The only trope I dislike is small dicks. The schlong has to be big to be arousing. namiultedjapanXD and Silvz 1 1 Quote

Plk_Lesiak Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 Virgin Sex. I understand some, or even most heroines in the story being virgins and that fact having some story relevance, but the way it is fetishized in eroge is fucking gross, on a few levels. ztrepzilius 1 Quote
Clephas Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 The normal/average/idiot protagonist. The talented protagonist who stops being talented the second the heroine route starts. The 'fake relationship' trope. The 'formal date' trope, where the heroine and protagonist follow conventional dating ideals regardless of their own personality or interests. The high schooler protagonist. The tsundere osananajimi heroine who denies she loves the protagonist so strongly that the protagonist (most of them being dense about tsundere) believes it and/or stops seeing her as a female. The 'month to love' trope in charage (where it only takes a month from the first meeting for the whole group to be in love with the protagonist and go through most of the heroine route). The 'next day' epilogue, where the epilogue deliberately avoids describing the characters' future so that they can set up for a fandisc after story that turns out to be only H content, thus having made me waste eighty dollars... I could go on and on about this, lol... Quote
sarkasmus Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 The only one that really annoys me is the useless MC, why is this one so common anyway? Just because they're easier to write (it's easier to make someone universally incompetent having problems/doubts/whatever without contradicting his/her character)? Other parts of VNs it don't like aren't common enough to call them cliches (like open endings). mitchhamilton 1 Quote
adamstan Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 (edited) The only cliche I truly dislike is characters turning into pornstars during h-scenes, throwing away their personalities. And other hentai cliches related to it. Most of other charage tropes mentioned above can be fun, if there is something else besides them in the story Edited March 25, 2019 by adamstan cykaki, mitchhamilton and Plk_Lesiak 3 Quote
AustriaVNFan Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 1) The 'forced' h scenes. And I don't mean scenes where girls are forced to have sex but ones that feel forced and are obiously only there so that the fappers don't lose interest. They are always so story-breaking. The scenes often happen out of nowhere and after it no one mentions it again. 2) Childhood friends: for some reason I don't like childhood friends routes. Probably because the MC is often so incredibly dumb about not realizing the feelings OR because the childhood friend girls are always so nosey and annoying. 3) When extremely obvious questions are not asked! Example (Muv-Luv Extra): Spoiler The MC in Muv-Luv Extra who wakes up next to Meiya in his bed one day and for months never seriously gets the idea to ask her why she - a person he has never seen before - is suddenly living in his house. 4) All girls falling in love with a loser MC for no reason. Yeah, totally. However, when it comes to childhood friends trope I'm on the opposite end - I usually love them. Except when childhood friend's route is messed up, like in One I never had such girl in my life, but for some reasons I like this trope. Maybe because I'm, how to say it... nostalgic(?) in general... That's probably why they are almost always there. I have been thinking about this for a bit (why I don't like them) and the reasons above are the only ones I could come up with Quote

nihilloligasan Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 1. shitty prose 2. shitty male characters 3. use of deres instead of developing real personalities 4. boring school setting (probably just biased here, american school seems a lot more interesting to me than japanese school) 5. stories that are based entirely on romance and dating sim structures 6. romance that fixes all of a heroine's problems 7. many, many sex tropes, including: multiple ejaculations, everyone bleeds and is in pain their first time, obnoxious loud moaning, everyone has a massive dong, no consequences for unprotected sex (imo everyone in a shitty dating sim deserves hiv), everyone acting the same during sex, shitty ikea descriptions, onomatopoeia instead of actual dialogue 8. girls with those fucking horrible high-pitched voices dear god someone kill it now 9. everyone is drawn with the same face and body type, just different hair/eye color and boob size conclusion: why the fuck do i even read vns Quote
alpacaman Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 The trope I came to hate the most is the forgotten childhood friend. For some reason she kept being in love with the protagonist for ten years after one of them moved away but doesn't even mention they met before until it makes for an emotional scene in the third act. ittaku Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 All of these tropes, by the way, have their fans and people keep coming back for more of it. If it weren't the case, they'd all go away. It'd be fair to say they're actually very popular tropes even, otherwise why would they feature so frequently? adamstan 1 Quote

All of these tropes have their fans and their haters. The thing is there are so many recurring tropes in nearly every VN that it happens very rarely you will only get those that you are a fan of. But as a VN fan you usually know this is bound to happen, so you just swallow the hate parts and fight through them hoping the good parts make up for it mitchhamilton 1 Quote
