nohman Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 I've yet to actually finish a Witcher game, even though I have them both on Steam. Any recommendations about how to get into the right mindset? I was expecting something like the Elder Scrolls games, so I was a little disappointed when I found out it was linear. EDIT: Also joined the GOG Galaxy beta and downloaded the free Fallout games that I got from them. Mostly I like the universe and enjoyed the game play in the 2nd one. The third one is going to be a lot more open world this time around. Quote

I was expecting something like the Elder Scrolls games, so I was a little disappointed when I found out it was linear. You need to go in expecting a great story and amazing world. It's pretty unique take on dark fantasy, I think I once described it as a "realistic" medieval fantasy. The world is full of shit and misery as you would expect from medieval times, though everything goes through fantasy filter full of filth. Elves and Dwarves live as secondary citizens and are the target of racism and so on. And the grey morality is done well unlike in many RPGs, nothing is that simple in the world of witcher. The gameplay is pretty wonky in the first one to say the least, you need to click your attacks at specific times or it won't do anything. Still, it isn't that bad after you get used to it. You are missing a lot if you give up on the first one and go straight to second. Witcher is amazing experience, you should definitely play it. The prologue and chapter one might feel little bit too linear, but after that it opens up a lot. It's still not a open world game, but the areas where you can visit are big enough and full of different events. Also the order in which you do the quest is flexible, since most of the quests are linked together in interesting ways. Quote
Fred the Barber Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Played some Destiny tonight. The little event they launched this week, as a sort of appetizer for next week's big DLC release, is fairly entertaining. I really don't know what to think about this game. On the one hand, I totally agree with all the people who complain about it being ludicrously repetitive - you do, in fact, do the same things over and over and over again. On the other hand, playing it is genuinely fun, even when you're doing pretty much exactly the same thing you did last time you played the game. Quote
Getsuya Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 I randomly caught Falcom Fever and grabbed all the PC Ys games. I've played most of them but I never did get around to playing Ark of Napishtim on the PS2 so this is my first time going through that one. I decided to play on Hard right from the start because I'm a huge Ys fan and I figured I could take it. ... que me spending probably 3 hours today on a single boss. I could not for the life of me figure out how to kill him and even when I read a guide I couldn't kill him until I went out and ground up a few levels and upgrades. I guess it's kind of sad that Hard is less about skill and more about being a high enough level to tank hits and do enough damage to finish battles in a sane amount of time. I think as a continuation of Falcom Fever I'm going to go out and grab the remakes of Legend of Heroes Trails of Zero/Trails of Blue for the Vita. I freaking love the Trails in/of X series and I have no idea why I've waited so long to get caught up in the series. I'm 4 games behind now! Quote
Funyarinpa Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Started ME3, the tone is nice. I already know the ending though, and is there nothing new for gameplay from ME2 other than fancier crosshairs? Also, Super Metroid did click with me this time around. I'll be playing that as well. Super Mario World is so boring on my phone I think I'll just drop it. Quote
nohman Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Still enjoying Hyrule Warriors and started replaying the Witcher 2 in preparation for the 3rd game. Quote
InvictusCobra Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Been getting hooked on Path of Exile for the past weeks. Never quite liked ARPGs except Diablo 3 (which everyone thinks to be the worst ever lol), but now PoE feels highly satisfying, Must be due to having played Infinity Engine games for a while. Oh, and given all the recent Witcher talk, allow me to flaunt myself shamelessly: You are looking at one of the 0,5% of players who have beaten Witcher 2 on Insane Mode Quote
InvictusCobra Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 If you don't play the multiplayer, you might not get the ending you want depending on the choices you made in the other games and what you do in the third, just FYI. If you do play the multiplayer, understand that it has a really shitty unlock system that tries to force you to spend money to get what you want. Do you hate Vega? I know I did. Freddie Prinz Jr. always seemed a bit too cocky for my tastes, so combining him with a cliche macho military dude just made any possibility of me liking his character nil. I wish I had played Renegade so I could have smacked him around and insulted him. It depends. I completed ME3 with the best possible results in the war and I didn't play online at all. You just have to 100% the game. Boring as hell though, with all the space probing missions. Quote
Funyarinpa Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 thanks for the advice If Vega isn't that muscular prick (the first guy you see in the game) then I have not met him yet. Quote

If you don't wanna play multiplayer, there are trainers that maxes your galactic preparation to 100% Quote
Kurisu-Chan Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 But he's soooo annoying >.> I actually didn't know that. Thanks for the tip It made a huge scandal because olol homosexuality. My FemShep, who slept with Kaidan and Thane, finished lesbian with Traynor. lol My Mass effect play was epic. Quote
solidbatman Posted May 16, 2015 Author Posted May 16, 2015 Oh my god, I didn't know it got updated again. I'll have to invest more hours into it again eventually > < I'm kind of curious what the changes and new additions are. Late reply, my bad. Plenty of new parts, new resource mining on planets, new plane parts including mk.3 parts. Fairings, and a brand new aerodynamics model along with rentry heating. Gone are the days where you could go straight up until 70,000 meters and do a turn. Now, an actual gravity turn is required almost right at the start of the launch, and the aero model will kill you if the rocket is built with too much drag. I had to be really really careful and it took a lot of trial and error to get it right,. Lexyvil 1 Quote
joehawks12 Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 re-visiting wasteland 2 before tomorrow's unlocking of my copy of witcher 3. I wonder how much the updates have changed the game. i am. so. fucking. hyped. My gut instinct is telling me this is going to go down as one of the greatest video games ever made, even 20-30 years from now, and my gut instincts are always right. Also black blood is back! what a bad-ass potion. Apparently hbo is trying to get rights to make a tv series. THAT WOULD BE SO GOOD. And my family would finally understand my undying love for this series. Quote

Funyarinpa Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 I really should play MGS1 ~~~ Super Metroid is amazing But why the heck is it so damn similar to Zero Mission?! Also I realized today that almost all of Nintendo's famous franchises are built on repetition. Metroid: Explore, find item, kill boss, get another item, rinse, repeat. Mario: Eight worlds, one miniboss in the middle, boss at the end, rinse, repeat Zelda: Go to dungeon, get item, use item in dungeon, get Big Key, open boss room, defeat boss with the item you just got, rinse and repeat. Kurisu-Chan Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 Seriously, though, if you want a Witcher show that actually stays true to the source material, HBO is not a good bet. Coming from a guy that's obsessed with A Song of Ice and Fire, they've utterly butchered the plot. Might as well just rename it to something else at this point, because it's not even the same thing anymore; the only similarities are the characters, and even they got majorly changed. I'd rather not see a game series that's rather good (and a book series, if what I've heard is correct and the books are awesome) get the Game of Thrones treatment. Went back to the first Witcher, cleared all of my old saves and started over. I forgot just how easy the combat is. I started looking at other things in the distance while fighting to make it slightly more challenging. Hopefully the combat in the sequel is much better, because I'm certainly not playing the first for the combat gameplay xD Plz Hbo, just do your Monster live series with Guillermo Del Toro as realisator first. Turnip Sensei Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 Apparently hbo is trying to get rights to make a tv series. THAT WOULD BE SO GOOD. And my family would finally understand my undying love for this series. Fun fact: there is actually a Polish witcher tv-show, though it looks pretty cheesy from what I saw. Went back to the first Witcher, cleared all of my old saves and started over. I forgot just how easy the combat is. I started looking at other things in the distance while fighting to make it slightly more challenging. Hopefully the combat in the sequel is much better, because I'm certainly not playing the first for the combat gameplay xD The gameplay in the Witcher 2 is so much better. The reason why the combat in witcher 1 is so awkward, is because the game is built on a engine for turn based RPGs, where as the sequel has proper engine for the action RPG. You can control your attacks more properly and it actually feels like you are in control of the character. You are going to miss the group style though, since the sequel doesn't have combat styles, only light and heavy attacks. They combo nicely so it doesn't feel restrictive, but the fights against large groups of enemies become pretty deadly. Quote
Kosakyun Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Also I realized today that almost all of Nintendo's famous franchises are built on repetition. You could say the same for a lot of games. Though repetition doesn't necessarily take out the fun. Quote
LinovaA Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 I bit the bullet. I finally started playing HDN Re;Birth 1 ... RIP free time. Quote

EldritchCherub Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Playing: Stalker - Clear Sky: Installed it with complete mod which seemed to fix a lot of the bugs present, and yet the game keeps crashing near the end at Limansk. Overall, had some great moments like going up against different factions, but I still like CoP more. Fallout - New Vegas: A couple of missions before going to meet Mr. House and deciding whether to kill him or not. Like it more than Fallout 3, will probably end up buying DLC when it goes on sale.
