I think I have tried 5 times now in XCOM 2. I am getting rekt. The damn RNG feeling when you miss a 95% shot and your character died because of everything you calculated with that "success" fails. Let's add some additional panic or a downspiral catastrophe.  I love you XCOM. But I hate you so much too. :D

@kyrt Is the Japanese audio removed as a whole? Or just some parts with the singer?

Currently playing Darkest Dungeon. The visuals are pretty lively and sleek even in 2D!:illya:

Very addictive although somehow very frustrating at times. I spend too much resources on my Veteran Party members only to get slaughtered in the end!? God damn it this game but still like you! :wahaha:

The game looks like this. Even though I kept on dying numerous time, cannot seem to stop playing it because its so much enjoyable XD

Yeah XCOM is a love hate game. Fun though. I'm back to being addicted by fire emblem at the moment however so xcom is going to wait a bit before I tackle a second attempt. Speaking of Fire Emblem yes all japanese audio is removed...it will just have the dub. It's possible (but extremely unlikely) that we might get it as a dlc (paid for or free). I would not base my purchase on said uncertainty though. The dub from what I've heard seems decent with most of the characters and even the english version of the song that caused the big issue in the first place is not completely awful...especially the slower version of the song. I'm just going to hope the dub is decent sucks though for anyone hoping to be able to play the japanese version (unless again later dlc).

A few xcom tips: Initiating combat correctly is one of the most important skills to nail down. Even though the game suggests you do this, do not break concealment by overwatching everyone but one guy and shooting with the last one. This often allows the enemy to get flank shots on you that you can't do anything about. You also have little control over who you eliminate first. If you have time, set up an overwatch trap so the enemy paths into your soldiers and you overwatch shoot them on THEIR turn, not yours. And if you don't have time, just open fire with someone without much utility like a sharpshooter, and then plan out the rest of your turn based on how they react.

After you get into contact, use and abuse grenades. ALWAYS bring a grenadier, maybe even bring two if you can. Lean on the frag grenade's cover destruction capabilities heavily to leave enemies exposed. If you're ending missions with spare grenades, then you aren't using them enough, they're truly a godsend. Also build Flashbangs ASAP. If you ever get yourself into a tight spot, toss a flashbang out. If a sectoid or Codex ever does any annoying psychic shit, flashbang them and it will cancel it out. Once you get mimic beacons, start using those to get you out of awkward situations. Activated two enemy groups at once and are at danger of getting flanked? Toss a mimic beacon and the enemy will shoot it instead of you. It's so good.

Rangers with phantom are clutch. Try not to reveal your phantom ranger on first contact if at all possible, but obviously don't lose anyone over keeping them hidden. Then use your phantom to scout ahead from the rest of your group so you can initiate combat correctly. I don't like the sword skills too much, I don't think swords do anything that shotguns don't do better, aside from basically being able to "run'n'gun" every turn with the sword. That said, Run'n'gun plus Implacable is a clutch combo. Run right into the heart of the enemy, gun down their key soldier and run right back into cover. Rapid Fire later makes this ridiculous.

Sharpshooters are really only good using the gunslinger traits, but they are incredibly good. You can shoot a billion times a turn just by going all the way down the right tree. For sure give your sharpshooters special damage-adding ammo, as this gives them a huge boost in damage potential since they shoot several times a turn. Adding an ammo type adds at least two damage to each shot (despite only showing one, the DoT is guaranteed to deal at least one damage as well), and you can apply that to multiple targets! So good. They're weak to armor, though, so always bring a good shredding plan.

For Grenadiers, as I said grenades are the linchpin of any sound tactical plan. This makes their grenade perks great, obviously. But having a gunner build isn't a bad idea either, because Suppression, Holo Targeting, and Chain Shot are so good, and Rupture is godlike. Actually, you probably want Shredder Ammo on everyone, blast padding isn't very good. And you also probably want Salvo on everyone over Hail of Bullets. More actions, more destruction, more good.

Specialists are just kind of shit. They're good in longer, protracted missions where you'll want to heal multiple times, but aside from those they don't really have much of a place, especially in the late game. In the early game, Combat Protocol, Haywire, and Scanning are helpful, and once you get into the mid game you may want to respec them into an overwatch-support build with the medical and overwatch perks. I generally give my specialists flashbangs and save their moves for last. Their combat protocol can finish off enemies who are close to death, or they can flashbang to buy yourself a turn.

The game really strongly wants you to play fast, and you should do so. It's really punishing if you just sit back and trade shots with the aliens, that's a bad way to go. Blow up cover, find good run'n'gun opportunities (don't leave your precious rangers exposed, though) set up flanks, and generally try to end every single engagement in one, or two turns tops.

Just gonna add something. I'd say that actually rangers with sword skills are one of the most insane and op units there are. Bladestorm, Reaper, Untouchable... basically after getting a few promotions your ranger will 1-hit enemies with its sword, dodge all enemy melee attacks and ignore overwatch shots, counterattack/attack anyone getting near it, dodge ranged shots thanks to Untouchable, etc. If the enemy is really close together it might be a bit too dangerous (unless you already have Reaper, in which case you'll simply kill them 1 by 1 in the same turn), but in most missions the enemy doesn't really go together that much after the initial "we've spot you and taken cover" positions. And, once you unlock the stun sword (quite early in the game), the enemies you don't kill with 1 hit, you leave stunned or unconscious, most of the times.

I also disagree with Sharpshooters. Pure snipers end up getting far more kills. And with some weapon upgrade that gives aim + special bullets, they'll snipe most enemies. To this, add Death from Above (getting a kill from higher ground takes only 1 action and doesn't end your turn) and Kill Zone (this one is insane, you take a reaction shot against any enemy that moves or attacks inside a really big cone zone). This means a single Sharpshooter can easily kill a whole group of enemies within a single turn. Gunslinger is also good since some enemies will get too close, which is why I always bring 1 of each, but Snipers simply outdamage gunslingers, and offer so much cover. They have the problem of demanding not to move if you wanna shot with the rifle, but since you want to put it on high ground and leave them there, it's not that problematic. And once you get the Spider Suit, this becomes even easier.

To be fair, I wasn't really ruling out Untouchable, that perk is really good and I probably should have mentioned it. I don't consider it a sword perk, though.

I dunno, the swords just don't really do it for me. I much prefer the flank and shoot approach. You can gun down huge enemies in short order with rapid fire, providing the best single-target damage in the game.

@Decay Yeah I am already using most of your tips and tricks. I experiment a lot when I play so a few playthroughs may go to hell in just a month or two because I tried something new. I am a fan of the advanced warfare building (random perks). Yes it is completely random but the feeling when you get something ridiculous OP on a class that benefits so much from it. But yes it is a lot to invest. I mostly build it because of the damn 22 days wounds. That's at least minimum 3 fights.

I think Specialist are pretty good as a support. Destroying mechs, healing and overall just a pain in the ass with disrupting and supporting your frontliners. Yes they don't do that much later on but just disabling that big mech for a turn or two is valuable if you have to clean up the grunts first. But I think all classes got a function. It all depends on the map, enemies and outcome of the map. Bladerunners are nice. Sadly my Lt. Bladerunner died in my last fight yesterday. The only casualty. UFO attacks...

I am always using grenades. In some cases too much. But blowing up covers are a must if you don't want a prolonged fight where the counterfire probably kills one of your guys with my luck. Flashbangs and smokes are really nice to have.

But I am most of the time killing myself with stupid decisions and experimenting. I rarely listen to others and want to experiment myself. But thanks for the tips. Some of them I didn't think about. Going to try it.

Checking out Dungeon Travelers 2. Pretty much what I expected so far, looks fun and fan-servicey :makina:.

We're quickly introduced to not one, but two childhood friend heroines, yay! What's the best thing about childhood friends? You can run into them in a totally provocative position and still have a normal conversation!

Didn't even bother watching Sword Art Online yet, so Hollow Fragment is gonna be indefinitely delayed. Maybe when Summer comes around..

I just got arslan the warriors of legend, since it was a dynasty warrior type game with hack and slash, always been a fan of those. It even came with the first episode of the anime, but it was funimation...meh,  the game is kind of different from the original koei type games, has this new mechanic where you can lead  Calvary and infantry charges,as if killing people by the hundreds isn't already enough. There are several parts to the story and then its free-mode where you can choose from different characters.  Its a great game, but not much different from your average koei games, so I would recommend it if your a koei fan, but otherwise don't spend 60 bucks on it.

Have fun grinding in dungeons!

Nah, Dungeon Travelers is actually really entertaining game, provided you like dungeon crawling and fan-service. The girls are all really cute and the combat system is solid.

Speaking of DT2, I think I should finish that game. I have a syndrome of buying all the DRPGs, loving them and then for some reason stop playing them around the final dungeon. It's usually either that I get stuck on a boss or some new shiny game is released, but to this day I've yet to finish most of the DRPGs I have. But as long as I like them I guess that's okay.

I think I am closing on in my first completion of the XCOM 2 campaign, I have everything under control and I can whenever I want push down several dots on the Avatar project. I have to say that how you play earlygame vs lategame is very different. At least in my case. Phantom rangers lol. The double crits with rapid fire. Vaporizing aliens are fun.

Some thoughts of my campaign so far and of the different classes.

Spoiler

But overall grenadiers and rangers are the classes I abuse to maximum at the moment. Phantom rangers outclasses bladedancers lategame. But in early/midgame I think bladedancers are the better choice. Because of the lack of resources, experience and weapons/items. Bladedancers are able to chop down any sectoids and rush into battle and trigger bladestorm if they try to run away. If you got a specialist with some healing/support everything is fine. But phantom rangers with rapid fire are ridiculous.

Grenadiers are your backbone. They destroy cover, shred armor and is overall great and a pain in the ass. In a squad of 6 at least 2 are grenadiers. They are what you need against highly armored units. It is fun experimenting with the EXO suits too.

Sharpshooters are nice too when you pick of weaker/important units. (fuck shieldbearers). I haven't unlocked their true potential yet. But I know they are very capable soldiers during the whole campaign.

Specialists are as Decay said earlier something you use as support with flashbangs, mimic beacon, medic, hack and such. If you don't trigger several groups at the same time my squad can easily bring down any unit in a single turn, even the Avatar, Automaton, that huge MEC (forgot the name). Shredding armor and holo targeting is your best friend.

Aid protocol isn't that bad actually. I have been experimenting a bit with it. It is very situational. But the other options are more valuable if you can use them though.

Overall a great game.

I finished Trails of Cold Steel. Amazing game, I think its probably my favorite game on the vita, even above Persona 4. Also I see Falcom has graced us with another cliffhanger ending. The wait for the sequel will be painful.

Got Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon yesterday. Pretty enjoyable so far, although I heard it's still not as good as Explorers of the Sky.

The narration and characterization is pretty good, and the (European) Spanish localization is really amusing. Gameplaywise it feels very much like DS Mystery Dungeon games, which is good. The beginning of the game, however, feels a little easier, so I hope difficulty scales properly.

Started a couple games today.

Undertale is quite nice, though I'm not feeling the "TOTALLY GOTY AMAZING INDIE AAAAAAAAA" vibe yet. Pretty good music and whatnot.

Jet Set Radio (almost wrote Jew Set Radio) is also great (definitely play with a controller). So much friggin' style!

Besides that I'm continuing Persona 3 Portable.

There's 3 things Undertale has going for it:

- The internet, meme humour, or however you want to describe it, that I'm not a fan of.

- The whole idea that you can avoid battles, which actually has been a 'thing' in the RPG world for over a decade and other games do it much, MUCH better than Undertale.

- The story, which is apparently quite decent but I chucked it before I got to that stage.

Because of this, I can only conclude that Undertale is one of the most overhyped games released in the past couple of years. While it may be 'good', I don't understand how it got so much hype and attention.

Agreed on the second point- I downloaded and tried out a SMT Strange Journey ROM a couple weeks ago and that is soooooo much better in terms of enemy communication .

Posted

Undertale and SMT attempt to do two completely different things with their "enemy communication" systems, they aren't really analogous at all. They do some pretty wild things with their battle system. Every enemy is a unique fight, which is cool.

I liked the humor a lot. It's not going to totally blow your mind or anything, but it's just an incredibly charming, funny game.

Currently playing the Long War mod for XCOM ew, I feel like I'm chewing glass lol :makina:

Still, it's a good filler while I wait on a proper patch for Xcom 2, or the pending release of Stardew Valley.

My copy of FE Fates Conquest has arrived. Hope i will be in for a wonderful time.

I really want to get the new FE but I made a promise to my self to clear my backlog first.

Conception II should be beat by tomorrow, then I will continue with my RE HD play through (which at this point I don't really want to do).

After that going to knock out Monster Monpiece (another game I really don't want to fuck with). Then SAO Hallow Fragment (again don't wanna fuck with).

When all of that is said and done I have about 10 more games to go through, at least.

The Division seems kind of neat, but I dunno, I think I'd get bored of it after a couple days. And gosh, am I ever rusty with shooters. It's been quite a while since I've played one. Well, I played MGS5 last year, but that was with a controller and barely did any run and gunning. Going back to the good old keyboard and mouse, and it's clear that I can't quite hack it like I used to be able to.
