Would you consider more text-based games like 'Academagia' visual novels if they meet certain requirements?

So, many consider Academagia (and similar games) just text-based games since they are much more text-heavy than your average visual novel. However, there are still a LOT of visuals in this game, as well as, of course, reading, and you make choices like you would in many other more 'traditional' visual novels.

So, my question is this: do YOU consider a game like Academagia a visual novel? Whether you do or don't, I'd love to hear your reason why as well as your general criteria for what makes something a VN in the first place.
