Cause of common windows font spacing / kerning issues?

Does anyone know the direct cause of this common font issue?

Running into this in a project, despite another game from a newer version of the same engine having no such problem.
If anyone has any info whatsoever, would be appreciated.

Well, you provide the game name first. Base on what I see, it's likely text rendering issue

It's a game made in a quite old version of the tool SRPG Studio.
Anyway, it seems like the issue is that it's trying to write a non-monospace font with monospace spacing. I fixed it by setting the font to Consolas.
Maybe the developers changed something to support non-monospace fonts after they later released an english version of the tool, which was also passed over to newer japanese versions?

Japanese always fixed-width, they will always do that when they use their own text rendering code because they don't really care any other language.
