WinkBlinkel Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I was wondering if there are any other Dischan fans who were saddened by this news from a couple weeks ago. https://dischan.org/devblog/2014/01/dischan-state-of-affairs/ They're not gone, but it seems Dysfunctional Systems did pretty poorly. I personally adored both Juniper's Knot and Dysfunctional Systems, and it sucks to see western visual novel developers struggle. Did anyone else enjoy their titles? It's been harder to find fans of them ever since their forums shut down. Quote
Flutterz Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Huh, I didn't even know this had happened. I enjoyed Dysfunctional Systems, even though I thought it didn't quite have enough content for $5. Then again, I've gotten literally ever other VN I have for free, so I might be just a tiny bit biased. Quote
Tay Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 That's disappointing. I enjoyed Juniper's Knot. I didn't know that Doomfest left the company (and, apparently, two others were let go). Just goes to show we need to support these kinds of projects. Quote
WinkBlinkel Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 I definitely think Dysfunctional Systems could have used more dialogue options, and it did feel pretty brief. Regardless, the world they created seemed like it had the capacity for all kinds of neat stories. Plus Winter is a fun character. On the bright side, we are getting a Juniper's Knot... something. I thought the Fiend was adorably charming, so that could translate well into an animated series. Quote
Albedo Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Too bad, I really liked Dysfunctional Systems. It had a pretty interesting setup, better than lots of Japanese VNs actually, and I thought it had the right amount of content for its price... seriously, a comic book costs around 4 bucks, and it's only 22 pages. No need to add pointless slice of life scenes or padding (like lots of VNs do, sadly) if they add nothing to the story. Quote
InvertMouse Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Unfortunate to hear, but yeah, it definitely is hard to survive doing this full time, which I'm guessing they were. Seems like these days, when a game comes out, our first question is, "How long is it?" That's a killer for everyone, but the worst for budget studios in particular. Either they add a whole bunch of padding (like every game released these days), or they blow out of budget and fail to make nearly enough in return. I'd know--I've done nothing but lose money at the moment (TUT)/. All the best for these guys . Quote
Darklord Rooke Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Seems like these days, when a game comes out, our first question is, "How long is it?" Pfffft, yours maybe Sad to see they're struggling, even though I was never a fan of their games. Quote
WinkBlinkel Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 I actually pitched Juniper's Knot to people with the "It's only 30 minutes long" argument, and just playing that convinced them to buy Dysfunctional Systems. Quote
InvertMouse Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Pfffft, yours maybe Sad to see they're struggling, even though I was never a fan of their games. I wished (TUT). But no, hearing a game is long actually turns me off, because I know it probably just means they padded it with a whole bunch of repetition. Quote
Zalor Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 That really sucks. I thought that since they were on steam that they were at least doing pretty alright. I didn't know that Doomfest left the company (and, apparently, two others were let go). That's even worse news for me. Doomfest is the guy who got me into visual novels. Memo, (I think the first VN he ever made) was my first Visual Novel and I enjoyed it enough to further explore the medium. He's a great artist and his loss is probably a bigger blow than the lack of sales. Anyway I really hope the best for them since their visual novels often interest me a lot more than many Japanese ones. Quote
