Hadaka Shitsuji No Text, Only Boxes

Are you running your computer with Japan system locale? (link to instructions): Yes
Game Name: Hadaka Shitsuji
Description of Problem: In the dialogue boxes, instead of letters or text, a bunch of white boxes are appearing. The spoken parts are all fine; I just can't read anything.
Your Operating System: Windows 8.1
64 or 32 bit (link to how to find): 64
What did you already try? I've re-installed it and tried running the non-English version, which ran fine, but (obviously) in Japanese
Did you download your game from Fuwanovel?: No, from aarinfantasy, since the pre-patched version resulted in a 666-system error for me.

 

Do you think anyone could help me? Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks!

I'm not even sure if Hadaka is compatible 8.1.  Have you tried running it with Program Compatibility and using something like Windows 7?

 

Also, obvious checks to make sure you're actually running in Japanese locale (not using Applocale, blahblah).  Not a font issue, since you're able to see the Japanese running that version.  Push comes to shove, download the Fuwanovel version, make sure the folder isn't set to read only, and try running _en as Admin.

 

I'm downloading a copy to my 8.1 laptop right now to test this theory.
