krill Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 well i started this anime when i got up this morning and i'm currently on the 10th episode. here are my current thoughts on the series. chitanda is so freaking cute that it makes my brain hurt. i love her character. so far all the main cast of characters are good but the chemistry between chitanda and oreki is what really drives my enjoyment of the show. the mysteries they solve seem really tame and with the exception of the missing chitanda memory of her uncle they have thus far been essentially pointless other then providing a setup for character interaction. oreki is fun to watch unlike most protagonists in recent years hes not flavorless and useless. his lack of motivation is something i can relate to as well seeing as how i also like to be left alone and not forced into doing stuff i have no wish to do. so far its looking like its gonna be a show thats average but with above average characters. what have any of you who have seen it thought of it ? Guest Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Well it's my favorite anime so yeah i've seen it. The different characters were designed perfectly, and it's so uncommon that I find it impossible to enjoy. Chitanda is just the cutest of all anime girls. Those eyes I've fallen for them ^^ The story doesn't go far but I don't even mind. The scenrio wasn't rushed and romance goes at a steady pace, like real romance ! It's not totally unrealistic and characters act according to their personnality with is unique by the way. I've never seen characters like Houtarou, Eru or even the other couple in any other anime. They are different and the show is really charming. 9.99/10 would be my rating Yeah I really liked it Quote
Nosebleed Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I've finished Hyouka and I can understand why some people might like it. If you're into mystery solving you'll probably enjoy it. I personally didn't find it all that great. Just average. And it really bored me at times with the incredibly dull mystery (in my opinion). The only thing that was driving me was Chitanda x Oreki but honestly the mystery got in the way and it wasn't even all that good. I know it's highly rated but ican't like a show when it's painful for me to watch it. That's my opinion at least. I also couldn't stand most of the characters as well aside from Oreki. Oreki's best friend was the most annoying one. Chitanda was tolerable. The other girl I don't even know what her purpose was she was just.. there. Overall Hyouka for me was one of KyoAni's lowest moments. Keep in mind i liked stuff such as Tamako Market and K-on but Hyouka was just.. too dull for me. I managed to finish it but it never really left an impression on me. Quote
Vokoca Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I've seen about half of it, and then I kind of stalled it, since it kept disappointing me. I was expecting something more from each arc, but I never got that, it all felt just painfully average. I'm not sure how to put this... it was like the anime was making huge deals out of things that were completely unimpressive in the end? None of the "mysteries" I've seen were that interesting, or their solutions, for that matter. The amateur movie arc was probably my favourite from what I've seen, but even then that wasn't particularly mind-blowing. That said, the art is gorgeous, and Chitanda is adorable - she was the reason I made it that far in the first place. Quote
Guest hairybumslapper Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 The animation and art is beautiful, as expected form a KyoAni Show, but beyond that it was just an OK anime. Although, MC Houtarou Oreki made the show worth watching because he is awesome. And +1 to Nakamura Yuuichi. My limited attention span probably couldn't stand a second viewing of this, since the mysteries were a little bit meh (aside from Oreki solving them like a freaking boss), and not having nearly enough romance to satisfy me. zoom909 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 People...This is a slice-of-life, character-based show and from that standpoint it's superb. Anyone whose judging it based on the mystery content alone or the romance content alone may as well choose another show. Quote

However Hyouka was dull even for a slice-of-life. I'm sorry i could not get into it at any point. Character based i can see but for me the characters were just annoying for the most part. Quote

It did rely on the mysteries a lot, it really didn't have much else than that and the characters' approach to them. I like slice-of-life anime, and some of my favourite shows have even less plot than Hyouka does, so I doubt the problem here is that it's slice-of-life. Quote

Anyone whose judging it based on the mystery content alone or the romance content alone may as well choose another show. see the problem with your statement is that while yes its a slice of life show it uses mystery as its central reason for the characters to interact. without the mysteries oreki would have left the classics club after knowing they had a single member as he said because he was no longer needed to prevent it from being shut down as his sister asked. it was through chitanda roping him in to solving mysteries that the relationship between the characters advanced. so if the reasons for the characters to interact at least in the beginning is presented weakly it does throw off the feel of the show. dont get me wrong i'm not watching it solely for the mystery genre or the romance genre for that matter i'm simply watching because i read a review stating it was one of the few slice of lifes to come out recently that was well done and figured id give it a shot as character driven drama and slice of life are some of the most enjoyable anime to me . but if you think that the mystery or romance content are unimportant id have to disagree. Vemocleus Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 I loved Hyouka. I loved the mysteries, even though they had no greater purpose to them. It was less about the mystery and more about the process behind it. Either way, I always found it to be engaging and delightful. Oreki and Chitanda didn't hurt the cause either. Quote
InvertMouse Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 I thought on Hyouka is that Chitanda is the cutest anime girl in recent years . That aside, it was okay. The show involved a lot of detective work. Tons of talking, in other words. Kyoani did their best to make those scenes look interesting with interesting visuals. Nonetheless, the characters are in reality just sitting in a room talking and talking. Also, the cast are always solving cases that are small in scale. It's a nice break from a murder mystery. At the same time, there's a reason why writers always set their mysteries on murders. Most other things are too insignificant for people to care about. Did I mention that Chitanda is really cute (>U<)? Quote

Mystery solving is a reoccurring theme in this anime, so you can't blame someone for judging it based on that alone. And for a slice of life, this would have been a little boring without the mysteries. If they ever make another season, they should consider including an interesting romance subplot between Oreki and Chitanda to keep things interesting. some new characters would be nice too. Quote
Guest Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 My opinion : Hyouka's scenario revolves around the whole mystery theme. But I don't think it's a mystery anime. The proof is that most of these mysteries have really little importance. When you tell me mystery, I think of Case Closed (yes sorry) and that in mystery to me. You have a main plot that is slowly releaved and tons murders or unexplainable things. Well that was really vague, but it's just impossible for my brain to define Hyouka as a mystery anime. Not happening. I mean of course they won't try to awnser to "The Ultimate Question Of Life, The Universe, And everthing" (42 btw) It's just a bunch of friends having fun solving problems in order to display their personnalities a thus let the spectator enjoy a nice slice of life anime. It's the same as a bunch of friends having fun playing games *cough*. "Des gouts et des couleurs on ne discute pas" Everybody can have his own opinion, I loved, some didn't, it makes me a little sad but i cope with it like a man and do some push ups to counter the sadness while my hands get wet by the stream of my tears <- 100% cure approved. krill Posted February 9, 2014 Author Posted February 9, 2014 ok i've now finished all 23 eps, and i gotta say it was a very enjoyable slice of life anime , probably one of the better ones iv watched since pet girl of sakurasou. the characters were great the interactions between them were really well done. the mystery deal was more of stumbling block in the middle then in the beginning or ending. in the beginning its used to create a chance for the characters to interact and near the end its used to develop orekis character emotionally. it seems like this show is in serious need of a second season though seeing as they did the phone call on valentines between fukube and ibara but didn't really show what that resolved other than a offhand remark by ibara to oreki that everything was mostly normal. also id like to see if that scene partially imagined by oreki of him proposing to deal with the business end of chitanda's family farm while she did the agricultural half of it will ever come to fruition, it seemed an awful lot like a proposal to me when he imagined it. zoom909 Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 it seems like this show is in serious need of a second season I read that there are currently 5 volumes in the series, and the anime was based on the first 4 volumes. So, if more novels are written, I guess they can make another season. Quote
krill Posted February 9, 2014 Author Posted February 9, 2014 yeah i checked up on that as well i looked at baka tsuki after i finished it and found only the first two are finished fan translation here and that there hasn't been any progress in a long while i think its close to being stalled, but i couldn't find any news about a continuation of the series in japan after volume five which was released in 2012 so i think the series is either slowing down or possibly complete. Quote
LoveFood Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 I didn't like how they ended the anime I really hope they'll make a second season! Quote
