Vokoca Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Hooray for a shameless necro! So after quite some time, I've decided to open Grisaia again, only to realize Yuuji's sayings are still as confusing as ever. Could anyone help me with this one? 『いい仕事は、地味な努力の積み重ね。楽な時ほど失敗する』 I can't wrap my head around the second part. What does the ほど particle even mean there? I know its usual uses, but for some reason it just doesn't make any sense to me in that sentence. Quote

Vokoca Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Oh, that'd actually make sense. Thanks, no idea why I didn't think of that, the sentence just seemed really odd to me. Quote
Funnerific Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 静寂というには騒がしい、火照った沈黙を振り払うように口を開く。 As far as I understand, the second part roughly means "to shake off the silence that was growing uncomfortable, I start talking". But what about the first one? I can't figure out the meaning of というには. Quote
B3A2T Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 So I googled というには and looked at some sentences: 美人というにはほど遠い -> Weblio translates this as "far from beautiful" 愛と言うにはちょっと足りない 不思議というには地味な話 春というにはまだ寒い陽気でした 剣というにはあまりにも大きすぎ I get the impression that the above mean: As for calling it love, there's not enough. => Not enough to call it love. Story is too plain to call it mysterious. Weather is still (too) cold to call it spring. Too big to call it a sword. So with your sentence, it might be something like: It's too 騒がしい to call it 静寂. Take this with an ample amount of salt though since I'm a novice too. Funnerific 1 Quote
