Visual Nove: Katawa Shoujo - cost

Does anyone know the production cost involved with Katawa Shoujo? 

Or was the entire thing not paid?

 

As I understand it, Katawa Shoujo was made from a group of random people - 21 of them, or something like that. Was KS created during their free time, or did they have a budget or something? Was the sound and music also self made?

As far as I know Katawa Shoujo was created by a bunch of people who got together on 4chan. That leads me to believe they composed the entire game for fun with as little money as possible (if not no money at all)

I'm pretty sure they never ever received any funding. Nor did they ask for anything (not even donations I think). But maybe they got some little hidden funding that was never made public? I highly doubt it though^^
