Shugo Chara is what I'll technically consider the 1st anime I've watched..

Since I really didn't consider anything as anime before that even though they are..

The first anime that I ever watched was probably Digimon or Pokemon but few years ago Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai was the one that really got me into anime.

First non-proper anime I watched(By this I mean like 10 minutes of it on TV whenever it was on, I made no serious attempt to actually watch the series)
Pokemon or Yu Gi Oh.

First serious anime I watched was Angel Beats followed by Clannad + Afterstory.
Ever since I have fallen in like with Key and Jun Maeda + Itaru Hinoue as well as the other co-founder which nobody mentions.

Does Doraemon count?

No?

Ok then, my first one was Madoka~ It was a new hit at the time I started stepping in manga/anime world, so I guess I was just curious about it.

And it was also the first one that made me cry (those boring Korean dramas do zero damage to me).

I guess technically it was Pokémon, though I only connected that with this "anime" thing many years later.

My more intentional "first anime" was several years later, when a friend handed me his home-made VHS recordings of Cowboy Bebop, taken back when it was running on Cartoon Network. Still a great way to get started :)

Seems to me like Cowboy Bebop is something like a "cult classic". Although I still have to watch it myself.

Among anime, Bebop is really more "classic" than "cult classic". They recently did a blu-ray re-release, and review sites were gushing about it, to the effect of: "Wow, this is actually as good as I remember it being." Pretty high praise for a TV show made in the last millennium.
