screw_ball69 Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Can anyone reccomend me any good VNs with RPG/stat building mechanics? 18+ would be nice but not nessicary, Eroge and Nukige is also welcome. Quote
Yukiru Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Utawarerumono is the only one I've read... I think. Quote
Keaton Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 I would suggest you read the rance series. Especially Sengoku Rance it is tons of fun and has what you are looking for. Quote
screw_ball69 Posted November 3, 2014 Author Posted November 3, 2014 Yeah I've been considering the Rance series for awhile now. Quote
nohman Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 -Kamidori The rance series Brave Soul Utawareumono Daibanchou Sunrider (If you are interested and care for that sort of thing, be sure to grab the uncensor patch) Tears to Tiara Toushin Toshi 2 They're of varying quality. My foremost recommendation would be Sengoku Rance. MoFried 1 Quote
Snowtsuku Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Kamidori Alchemy Meister is the only VN with RPG element that I played. Quote
Kelebek1 Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Eushully games definitely (stick with the ones they made more recently, from Kamidori onwards). They all have a lot of RPG stuff in, all made with NG+ in mind and there's a bunch of optional stuff you can do gameplay-wise as well as story-wise. Plus their games are really top-tier in terms of quality. None apart from Kamidori are translated though, I don't know if you're only looking for English VNs. Another one I'm liking a lot is Pastel Chime 3, by Alicesoft. Again, JP only. Quote
Clephas Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Eushully: Soukoku no Arterial (card battles) Ikusa Megami Zero (straightforward turn-based battle system, can customize protag stats) Ikusa Megami Verita (ditto to Zero) Madou Koukaku (strategy) SofthouseChara: Ouzoku (strategy) Wizards Climber (Dungeon-crawler) Xuse: Eien no Aselia (translated and strategy) Quote
Chewy Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Sword Art Online games: Infinity Moment and Hollow Aincrad Quote
Kosakyun Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Rance games. Gahahahahaha! As they've said, mostly Xuse, Alicesoft, Eushully, and Softhouse Charas are gameplay types. Sengoku Rance would be nice. If you don't like excessive H, then go Kamidori. Though Wil will become a manwhore. Quote
Avil Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 How about Eiyuu Senki Gold? Since it has an interface patch the gameplay wouldn't be a problem if you don't understand japanese. Quote
Carronade Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Yumina the Etheral, but Eien no Aselia is better. Quote
Kosakyun Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Yumina the Etheral, but Eien no Aselia is better. Quote
Mephisto Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Aselia's battle system is just a bit outdated, and the art is as well. The only grind in the game is if you want to full clear the game, since there's a lot of routes, and you need to pretty much start over for each route, and the battles are all more or less the same. Quote
Decay Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Both games, as well as most other gameplay VNs, commit the grievous sin of making you do the same damn thing over and over again long after you've gotten sick of it. Aselia and Yumina do it in different ways. In Aselia, a single playthrough does not offer much grind, but subsequent playthroughs by and large offer identical battles and there are many routes, making the whole thing really tedious and boring. With Yumina, you can do the main three heroine routes by skipping most of the gameplay (they made the bulk of it, the VR world, optional) if you keep the NG+ difficulty low, but if you want to get all of the side/bonus endings, expect a shitload of uninspired dungeon crawling. Actually I heard the "true" ending is unlocked only after you get all 5 other endings but I'm not sure if that's a full route with lots of story or what. Quote
Kosakyun Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 It won't be a problem if the person actually likes dungeon crawling and stuff. It can't be worse than Kamidori, right? I mean. I liked Kamidori. Even with its repetitive gameplay. Though the H-scenes might've helped. Quote
Decay Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Kamidori's gameplay was more fun for me (although I didn't exactly have a blast with it), but Yumina's is less grindy. Aselia is more repetitive than either. Regarding Yumina, if you like real dungeon crawling games like Wizardry, Might and Magic, Legend of Grimrock, etc, you will still probably not like Yumina's brand of dungeon crawling because it's actually really shallow and boring. The combat can be interesting at times but most of the time it's brainless. The exceptions are boss battles. edit: I haven't actually played any other dungeon crawling VNs, only other "real" dungeon crawlers, so I can't attest to how Yumina compares to others within the genre. Kosakyun Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Guess I'm just going to look forward to playing Yumina. We have varying tastes after all. Quote
Mephisto Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Yumina was a bit of a disappointment since the story was kind of .... meh, especially considering Aselia. Kamidori got pretty boring too, didn't bother with more than 1 play through, due to a lot of repetitive grinding/kind of uninspired story. The rance games are some of the more fun, and has a pretty decent lore. (Rance 9 is a ton of fun, seriously) The combat system in madou koukaku pissed me off to no end, feels extremely clunky and was just all around annoying. The world is pretty interesting though. Baldr Sky is pretty cool, definitely has a better feel than most of the games listed here. Quote
Darkshine Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Kamidori has enjoyable gameplay, just don't expect a character driven story cause most of the game is spent on battling monsters in dungeons and completing quests. Also H scenes. Quote
kratoscar2008 Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 How about Eiyuu Senki Gold? Since it has an interface patch the gameplay wouldn't be a problem if you don't understand japanese. Yes this also the first Eiyuu Senki, Persona 3 Portable kinda fits the quota as well. Quote
Aceinthehole Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 I remember the old Romance of the Three Kingdoms games played out a bit like a VN with all the events, but that might be a *bit* of a stretch from what you're looking for. Quote
