freelancerebel Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 I've recently started reading visual novels. I've finished muv luv, g senjou maou and the first part of Umineko. Out of those I've really like Umineko but decided to hold off after the first part because I left g senjou maou half finished. I've just finished that novel and I am looking to start something new. I really liked Umineko because the writing and characters are well developed. I also liked that they included adults with relevant story plots and play a substantial role in the game. This brings me to one of my main complaints with other visual novels. Usually, the parents of main protagonists are either conveniently out of town on business or dead. The main point is that I like mature complicated characters and plot. I can stomach slice of life but would prefer a constantly moving story line with thoughtful and meaningful characters. Additionally, I do not like the harem aspects of many of modern visual novels. Ideally I would just like a good story but if it can't be helped I can read the harem parts. Sorry this was long. I am definitely enjoying my time with visual novels but I am having problems finding what suits my tastes. Please recommend something Quote
Carronade Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 If you liked Umineko so much, why not try Higurashi? Sure, the focus is on the kids, but they do have their issues, and the VN tackles some serious issues, like child abuse (although it's rather heavy-handed.) If you're in the mood for something short, Narcissu 1 and 2 also deals with adult subject matter. Quote
nohman Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 If you enjoyed G-senjou, Sharin no Kuni would be a safe bet. Additionally, one of the heroine's mother plays an actual role in the story. One of the endings is a harem ending, but you can just not read that. Deardrops, the protagonist is past highschool age and the bassist of the group is a middle-aged, hard living man. Grisaia no Kajitsu has a good share of adult characters, with them being the source of a lot of the conflict in the routes. 傍観者 1 Quote
freelancerebel Posted December 9, 2014 Author Posted December 9, 2014 Thanks for the suggestions guys. These give me something to start from. A few people have mentioned Grisaia no Kajitsu so I will definitely look into that. Also ayakshibito and Sharin no Kuni look really promising. Time for some research! Quote
Deep Blue Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Another vote to Sharin no Kuni Himawari no Shoujo It's really a must play. Swang song, this novel is awesome, the characters development is outstanding on this one if you like mature complicated characters and plot this is the perfect VN, just keep in mind that it's really strong in every aspect that you can think of, gore, sex, rape, murder etc, but everything has a meaning on the novel.
