Fred the Barber Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Guys, if you don't stop talking about DxD soon, I'm going to end up watching it, and I'll only regret it afterwards. Especially when I keep watching all the subsequent seasons. I have so much legit anime to watch. I haven't even seen Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso yet, as I was forcibly reminded yesterday when I was magnetically pulled to a Blu-ray copy of it on the show floor at SakuraCon and my wallet teleported into my hands. So now that's on the shelf waiting for me, next to F/SN UBW, Attack on Titan, Silver Spoon, and a dozen other highly-regarded shows. And yet here I am right on the cusp of watching an oppai harem instead. Quote

jaxter0987 Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Its an on going struggle of how my Plan to Watch list continues to grow year after year. At the very least, every now and then, I come back to my Plan to Watch list to prune it of anime that looked promising but reviews say otherwise. Quote
Fred the Barber Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 So I watched... six episodes, I think, of DxD? The first arc, basically. It's... kind of not good, at least not unless you watch it the way ittaku suggested. I will keep watching anyway, up through to the end, so hopefully it gets better (shows often do, so I'm not doubting you guys just yet). At any rate, I'm not good at switching off my brain entirely - if I'm getting neither intellectual nor emotional stimulation, it doesn't do much for me (and if I'm being honest with myself, the second one is a much bigger deal than the first one). So far, neither of those is happening. Quote
Nosebleed Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 I think the second season is the best overall, but yeah it gets better later on as Issei discovers more powers and more elements come into the story. As far as the formula goes though, it's either hate or love. I hope you do enjoy it in the end though, it's a really good series if you can get into it. Quote
Fred the Barber Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 I finished Galko, and will amend my earlier statement: it is funny, different, and short, and the last episode is incredibly sweet. This is an easy recommendation, especially because the whole season takes about 1.5 hours to watch. Now back to DxD... Quote
andzalot55 Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 The anime Ao no Kanata is over; episode was great. Now I want to play its' VN but no English patch yet. :/ Quote
ittaku Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 Finished watching K-On 1st and 2nd series. The first one was excellent. The second series really lost all the magic the first one had and was only okay. It felt like they cashed in on the popularity of the first series and got funding for a double season second series but only had enough material for a single season. The ending was still very satisfying. Strangely most people rated the second season as equally high as the first, but I guess they were all converts by then and desperate for more K-On moe. Guess I better watch the movie through just for completion though I suspect it's more of the same. Next up, all the spring season shows, but I'm only listing the old shows I'm watching here otherwise I'd capitalise the entire thread since I'm always watching 30-40 shows concurrently... I actually liked K-On season 2 better than season 1, but solely because of the ending - I can't express well just how much I loved that season 2 ending. It's been long enough that I don't recall how the contents of each season compared, but I expect I'd agree with you that the first season was otherwise stronger than the second. I actually recommend not watching the movie - it took a lot of the punch out of the ending, for me. ittaku 1 Quote

Fred the Barber Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 So I've finished the first two seasons of DxD, and will probably get through the remaining one tomorrow. It's not really good, per se, but it is pretty fun. I wasn't sold on the story and setting until just about now - at the end of Season 1, I barely thought better of it than I did in my last post about it, even though the second arc was noticeably more interesting to me than the first. But then each arc in the second season was, again, a little better than the previous arc, and the end of season 2 really opened up a lot of potential character interactions and world-exploring options for future arcs, so now I'm actually interested to see where they go next. The harem side, which I thought would just be purely annoying, is actually a redeeming factor for the ecchi content, since it means it at least changes; otherwise it would be even more repetitive than it already is. The ecchi stuff... well, it is what it is. I'd be lying if I said I don't enjoy it every now and then, but it does get exasperating at times, especially when it's just retreading the same ground over and over. At any rate, Akeno is best girl, and Spoiler Azazel is always interesting to watch, so all in all Season 2 worked out pretty well for me, even though Spoiler the White Dragon Emperor is a yawntacular villain. Leaf Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Finished watching Konosuba, gotta say that it's not one of the best anime i've watched. Some of it's funny and I put emphasis on the word SOME, Aqua is way to annoying to like, and they also leave a cliff hanger too. Hope season 2 can make things better so i'm gonna stay hopeful, also finished first season of Cardcaptor Sakura and the movie should be the next stop. I've only seen 5 episodes so far and am conflicted since it seems a bit too childish to continue watching. Quote

I've only seen 5 episodes so far and am conflicted since it seems a bit too childish to continue watching. I understand, it really is a show aimed toward younger audiences really, if you've seen some fights with the Clow Cards they are more like nuisances to Sakura's normal life than actual dangerous threats to her life and others. It's also about romance mostly focused on grade school kids so it can be seen as girly too. Well this anime is not for everyone I got to say, if you want more adult romance and more action with magic then you might not like this series, that much I got to say. Okay now i'm gonna talk about the good points about the show which I think make Cardcaptor Sakura. Sakura is in terms an ordinary girl, she has a family, goes to school, does homework, chores, hangs out with friends, goes through crushes and gets into fights with her brother, normal things for a kid her age. Until Bam!!, she is suddenly thrown on this ride to capture the Clow Cards and stop them from causing trouble. The thing endearing about her is that she was not trained or prepared for this, just an ordinary girl caught up in unordinary ordeals. In a way we can relate to her, cause i'm sure we've had a few surprises that come out of nowhere in life and then we have to adapt to it and make it part of your regular life despite not being asked for it. The focus is not just in Sakura's battle against the magic forces she has to confront, but also juggling her life along with relationships she has with those she holds dear. Be it her best friend Tomoyo, her father and brother, and her crush Yukito. Her interactions with people make the show more than just a magical girl fighting the Clow Cards, but also about fighting for the life she has right now. It can be a great series if you give it a chance and there will be other characters introduced that will bring more relevance and spice to the plot, just wait till ep.8, ep.20, and ep.26 and see what I mean. This is all my opinion on the show, it's entirely up to you whether you wanna continue with it or not. You are in charge of you after all! RELEASE!! ittaku and Fred the Barber 2 Quote
ittaku Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 Finished watching the strike witches 2 OVAs and movie in preparation for the spin-off, Brave witches starting soon. I'd forgotten how much fun this series was and added it to my "ultimately satisfying endings" list. I've started watching nanatsu no taizai, the seven deadly sins, in anticipation of the second season starting soon. I'm enjoying it quite a lot so far as a silly fantasy action spoof thingy. Quote
Templarseeker Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 Just finished watching Nakaimo My Sister is Among Them! Pretty short anime but was at least entertaining till the very end. Now currently watching Monster, pretty nice setting in Germany although the pacing is somehow slow due to to character buildup but the conversations the characters has are fun to listen especially in English dubbed!  Quote
ittaku Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Finished Nanatsu no Taizai in a couple of days. That was great fun. I better check out the OADs and then I'm ready for season 2, though a show with as much pace as this is always painful to watch over many weeks. Quote
sub-zer0 Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 I just finished Plastic memories, it was good, but not quite how I expected it to turn out,i felt like the ending wasn't touching enough, just didn't make me sad for some reason, the build up to that point was pretty good, but I guess I just didn't like the way it ended...I guess I was expecting a more dramatic ending. God eater is next on my list, So happy that all the winter season animes are over,I was running out of things to watch, and the winter season was pretty damn good, usually winter seaons suck, but i guess this year is an exception. Fred the Barber Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Finished High School DxD. Final ranking for the seasons: 2 > 3 > 1. Overall the show was always fun, sometimes good, and never great. Fight scenes were probably far better than your average show with fight scenes, in retrospect, but unfortunately that's approximately the least important part of a show for me (to tell the truth, I'd simply rather be watching something that didn't have fight scenes in the first place). The world is pretty interesting, and I'm always up for a mythology mashup, but for me personally, there are definitely better things in this seemingly narrow but nonetheless very common genre of fanservicey mythology mashup club warfare anime: Mondaiji comes to mind immediately as one that I very much enjoyed. I don't know how the DanMachi anime compares, but based on the LNs, I'd expect High School DxD probably has the edge on it. Also, I can't go without adding this. Much as I would like to claim I didn't enjoy it, I honestly can't complain about the fanservice. It's probably the main selling point of the show, and it's certainly not bad. Quote

Not everyone feels the same way as me, but I though danmachi was actually very good, and better than dxd. The fanservice is much less than dxd (but then dxd is just shy of porn) but to me the action scenes had much more impact, whereas dxd was just kinda boost. Some people really got off on danmachi because of the whole loli boob goddess thing but to me that was the least interesting part. The characters are interesting, the story is interesting and the action well done. Quote
jaxter0987 Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 Plastic Memories spoilers: Â The ending wasn't as dramatic because the most dramatic thing in the entire show already happened in my opinion. And that was when Tsukasa had to put down Marcia. That gut wrenching scene, and the follow up of him personally telling Souta about Marcia. THAT was by far the most heart breaking event in the show. After finally coming to terms with Marcia's death and admitting that he actually loves her, his final memory of Marcia is being choked to death by her, followed by seeing her shot right in front of him. He didn't even get to say goodbye. I did feel the same way about the ending though, but I think thats intentional. I don't think we are meant to wallow in pity for Tsukasa's lost of his lover. The show's moral was coming to terms with death and that was what Tsukasa was able to do. You feel sad, but you understand that life must go on. Â Going to reiterate that loli big boobs is also my least favorite part in the show, aside from the villains of course. The other female interests do a much better job in my opinion of getting the viewer to like them. Hestia is just the stereotypical jealous girl which is always my least favorite character in harems. john 'mr. customer' smith Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 So not having watched anything mecha-related other than pacific rim when it came out, I just started watching the original mobile suit gundam. So far, it's surprisingly entertaining for something that's aged so much Quote
ittaku Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 Watched seirei tsukai no blade dance. Stock standard magic harem comedy action tropefest, but was fun nonetheless. Quote
