Hi folks,

like I said in the title I'm looking for a new epic VN to play(read). It should be something great with at least 30 h playing time and translated into english.

You can see what I've played so far on my VNDB. In addition to that I'll give you some thoughts to some of the VN's.

- Little Busters! : Role model for my search now. I Love it especially the relationships between the characters and the developement of these. The characters itself are all well written. Also the plot with is great. Another good point is the romance in the heroine routes. And the comedy is also great. Like I said role model -> for me the perfect VN

- HoshiMemo: I like the romance here especially. The heroines are also lovely.

- KonoSora: Art and romance are awesome. And like the other two I really like that kind of MC.

- Grisaia no Kajitsu: This is a bad example. I like the art and some of the heroines. But for me the story is weak and also the writing is not good. Too much length sometimes. And the protag -> really awful...

In the end I want something with a good MC (like LB!, KonoSora) and a great and long storyline (like Rewrite, LB!) ... I don't mind a bit Fantasy and/or SciFi, but it should not be too much and a bit believable.

If you have further questions just ask or look at my VNDB...

Now I'm open for your recommendations... Let's get started.

You want epic? Try Umineko. The two parts together are thought to comprise the single longest VN experience out there. It's freaking epic in multiple ways. It's totally linear and while romance/love is a recurring theme it's not really a romance story, but a mystery, so it differs from the other stuff you've read in that regard.

You can also try Coμ and Ayakashibito for a healthy dose of chuuni. I/O is a pretty good and lengthy sci-fi/cyberpunk read. It also doesn't look like you've read Steins;Gate, this needs to be rectified immediately. It's probably right on the cusp of 30 hours.

In terms of route-based romance stuff, you've read pretty much all of the good, translated, lengthy titles. ef is decent and longer than 30 hours, but is linear. It's told as a series of different romance stories with different protagonists and love interests. Majikoi could also fit the bill but it rarely gets serious and doesn't try to be suspenseful or a tearjerker like the others you mentioned. The complete translation might be finished very soon. Da Capo 2 was also decent, I thought. Although it pales in comparison to everything else mentioned in this post, it's decent route-based romance fare, and it's better than its predecessor by a decent margin, and has a crapload of content. Beyond DC2, you'll kind of be scraping the bottom of the barrel if you keep looking for 30+ hour english language romance VNs.

Well, that's several hundred hours of reading for you.

Wow surprisingly i found everything there except Majikoi terrible. Maybe it's just me but the more flawed or human a MC seems the more i hate a VN, very few cases exist where i bypass a MCs inferiority

If you are looking for romance focused VNs, as seen in your examples, I suggest Symphonic Rain for a medium length and Ef A Fairy Tale of the Two for a long length. Kira kira is also ok if you want some music stuff. Da Capo and Da Capo 2 is on the ok-ish side but I won't place it before the three mentioned. If I have to pick only one, Symphonic Rain of course. The only downside is the resolution (640 x 480) of the VN.

If you want something that deals on society and stuff, you can play Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo. Considering the ratings you have to G-senjou, I don't think this is the one you want but I'll put it anyway since I think it's pretty good.

Well, they're all decently popular and have good ratings so it's not like I'm throwing out crap that's objectively bad or anything. Games that aren't simple romance fare tend to have protagonists with much more developed personalities, it seems like you prefer the blank slate cipher protagonist.

Pretty much. My opinions on a VN aren't the most suitable due to my highly critical tendencies and lack of attachment to any of them

Finish Steins;Gate will ya Ezee 0yoflFm.png

@Snowtsuku wait is SR 640x800? I thought it was 640x480

Thanks for that... One thing I forgot, I kind of don't like NVL VN's... Umineko I don't like the art despite it might be awesome, but for me it's still a VISUAL novel so the art counts quite a bit...

Majikoi I've read all the translated stuff till now and I'm waiting for the translation to be done to start again...

I've read the first DaCapo but couldn't bring myself to the next ones...

At the moment I tend to Coµ, Ayakabishito and Steins;Gate but I'm still open for more...

And @Soverign , please stop messing in that thread if you don't willing to help constructively

My bad. All I know is that there's an 8 on the next one size.

On a side note: Your signature is full of twins -.-

I can relate to Da Capo. Da Capo 2 is better though. Though again, both are on the ok-ish side.

If Umineko's visuals are an issue for you, go for the PS3 patch.  It's available on Fuwa and gives a massive boost to the art in case it's too severe.  If NVL is an issue it swaps to ADV for Chiru, so it shouldn't be much.

The other thing that comes to mind when you say 'epic' would be Fate/Stay Night, something I'd recommend to just about anyone.  It's really good and it has a much wider audience than Umineko.  It's in NVL but the art is good enough that it shouldn't be too bad.  Frankly it gives a lot of freedom to the writing, which actually makes it quite good.

I personally was disappointed by it, but Muv Luv Alternative (after reading Extra and Unlimited) does have pretty *epic* moments and is long as hell.

I've heard people clock over 100-200 hours for Fate/Stay Night. That might be your call.

Ah, you noticed.

Why the long face -.- you gots a problems with twins? :kosame:

I've read the first DaCapo but couldn't bring myself to the next ones...

Sorry for not contributing any other recommendations  :nervous: but can I ask you what'd you think of Da Capo?

Some people suggested it to me when I made my recommendations thread, but lately all I hear about it is that "it's okay" which is already a big turn off since for most other VNs people recommend they at least say "i liked it" or "its good"

You are Eclipsed, you can ask everything here and anywhere ;) ...

It isn't bad but It's also not extraordinary in any part of it. So there is not much impressions you will really remember. If you know what i mean ;) ... Also the fantasy stuff there somehow confused me and the "cast" of the following games (Sakura Yoshino). Most say that DaCapo 2 is much better than the first one, maybe I should give it a try and report to you after that.

Actually, the guys who did the PS3 patch for Umineko also changed the first half to ADV, so it's not an issue at all

As for recomendations, I don't have any haha Umineko and Symphonic Rain should be on your list without a doubt.

So in the last elimination round now are only 2 VN's...

Steins;Gate & Ayakashibito

At the moment I tend more to Ayakashibito, because I think it will be a bit more fitting to me. What can you guys tell me now about these two to make my final decision?

Posted

Steins;Gate is definitely my favored one between those two, but it's a matter of taste. Ayakashibito is a route based game while steins;gate is mostly linear. It has some alternate endings but they're tiny mini-routes that are like half an hour each. Ayakashibito has at least somewhat standard heroine routes with slice of life comedy followed by almost standard eroge-style romance and drama, but of course they throw in a lot of action as well. Steins;Gate is more of a sci-fi thriller. In my opinion, it has more deeply developed characters and a more intriguing overall storyline. I guess it depends on what you're in the mood for.
