Zalor Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 There are a lot of people who debate whether the two you mentioned you played before Saya no Uta are even really VNs at all. I reserve judgment, seeing as I haven't actually played them, though. Edit: That said, most VNs have multiple endings, which are picked up dependent on what choices you make. However, since the reasons why those choices can lead in a certain direction are... less than obvious in most cases, most people just use the walkthrough and treat it like a variation on novels, that happen to have pictures, music, and voices attached. @Grep: I am one of those people who would not consider games like Ace Attorney as Visual novels. As Clephas said, to me Visual novels are a story telling medium, hence the reason why I bolded the word novel. Honestly though, the combination of music, visuals and writing makes for an extremely immersive experience. While VNs are not games, they are stories that make you feel like you are in them. So don't expect most visual novels to be like Ace Attorney (because in many ways it is not a VN), but they are still fantastic and I highly recommend further exploring the medium. grep 1 Quote
Darklord Rooke Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Well like I said, I really liked Aced Attorney serial, but once I started to look deeper, everyone is like "oh sorry man no gameplay". Or Ace Attorney was unique of its kind. I suppose at the end of the day, Ace Attorney is technically considered an adventure game. An adventure game is one which combines a narrative, puzzles and exploration. On the up side there are plenty of them on the DS and 3DS. On the PC you can always start looking somewhere like here: http://www.gog.com/games/adventure##sort=bestselling&page=1 PS: Ace Attorney isn't unique. The only unique thing about it is that most people consider it a VN Quote
Mr. Meogii Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 In any case you'd be better of buying a Rpg man. Visual novels won't be able to provide you with the game play you desire. However like I said. I was also in your shoes once. I remember playing the Love Hina Rpg. It was so amazing that I went out of my way to find more. But unfortunately I did not. So I gave visual novels a try. At first it was weird because I was expecting a choice to come up. But after a while I really got into the story. And the rest is really history. Point is I really don't think you should write of Vns because of there lack of choices. Quote
Clephas Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 What is that you want, precisely? Do you want a game that tells a story? Or do you want a game that happens to have a story glued to it with mushy banana? Quote
Kosakyun Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Tiago's right. VNs are about H-scenes and only about H-scenes and any VN without H-scene is trash that shouldn't be read This guy knows what he's saying. But yeah. Basically, if you dislike simply reading through a story where some choices pop up to give you different endings, then the medium's not for you. You can also try a lot of different things to see if you can actually get into it though. Quote
grep Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 Ok guyz, thx for the full clarification. I decided to finish Saya no Uta and to make conclusions later. Just because I don't like this in the beginning, doesn't mean it wont have something that I like in the end. And I wont abandon my quest for seeking a hybrid ( VN+puzzle+adventure) games. There must be something else under the hood. Quote
Clephas Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Check under adventure games on rpgfan. There should be a list of what you want somewhere on there. Quote

Mr Poltroon Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Welcome to the forums - I am probably the coolest and most useful person you will meet during your stay here. As your post very expertly showcases. But yes, as Clephas said, games like Phoenix Wright aren't one in a million, it just happens that there are many more VN's than there are "adventure games" in Phoenix Wright's style. Quote

I realized you sarcasm and no its not funny or smart. When someone don't understand something, its better to obtain proper instructions, then to wonder around. Clephas Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Umm... no, I was serious. RPGfan does a lot of reviews of adventure games. As a result, there are a lot of such games in their articles. Quote
Darklord Rooke Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Winner: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc I still don't know what Danganronpa means (maybe someone can enlighten me?), but I do know why it was voted as the best graphic adventure game this year. What happens when you lock students who are the best-of-the-best at what they do permanently inside a school and subject them to the whims of a robotic teddy bear? Turns out you get a thrilling murder mystery story with a bit of sci-fi for good measure. Danganronpa's crazy (to say the least) cast are fantastic characters, and not once could I predict where the story would head next. Throw in some Phoenix Wright-styled court case shenanigans (where the accused is executed) and exploration, and Danganronpa is impossible to put down. The abstract visual style only aids the black humour in creating a chilling and unsettling world. Dangranonpa is a game not to be missed. Quote
Clephas Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Danganronpa... 'Dangan' is a 'bullet'. Ronpa is... basically to defeat someone through argument. I think you can guess the rest. Quote

I'd already given you a few suggestions earlier, though. Similar in gameplay to Phoenix Wright you have Dangan Ronpa. Which is a VN...? Probably not, but it's something similar. Some gameplay to be found here. 999: 9 Hours 9 People 9 Doors is another VN with gameplay I really think you would enjoy. At least, I think the two games above go well for Phoenix Wright fans. Looks delicious. Quote

He doesn't come off to me as the biggest of trolls around here. It was legitimate advice. RPGFan reviews PC Visual Novels (like Ever 17) and Adventure games (like Phoenix Wright, Ghost Trick and Hotel Dusk.) You have to dig a little because you can't sort by genre but it's a decent source if you're willing to go through the trouble. @Grep: Ghost Trick was made by the same people who made Phoenix Wright, so be sure to check that one out. Also Hotel Dusk. Both are on the DS. Quote
grep Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 Once I finish with Saya, going onward. Its getting better Quote
BookwormOtaku Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 There is one eroge I've played that's similar to Phoenix Wright, elf's Shin Mikagura Shoujo Tanteidan: https://vndb.org/v1092 http://www.elf-game.co.jp/net_shop/soft/special/mikagura/mikagura.html Not only do you do investigations but (in the main game) you also get to examine in game dialogue to look for clues. There's also some puzzle solving too. Interestingly this game is kind of three games in one as in addition to the main story there's two short games that act as prequels to it that also feature FMV style anime scenes, some of which have events where you need to click at certain spots to advance the scene (the game lets you retry if you fail them). Neither of these two games feature any H content which has me curious if they were either originally on console or were intended for console. The only problem is this game is untranslated (would be nice if someone fixed that officially or unofficially (and yes I have asked MG). grep 1 Quote
