GIF, Graphics Interchange Format, how do you pronounce it? An eternal question that despite having a defined answer by its very own creator, people still tend to defy.

I wanted to know how many people here pronounce it as GIF with a hard G as in Gate, and how many pronounce it as JIF with a soft G as in Giraffe.

In English, as you should be familiar with, G is usually pronounced /g/ when preceeding either A, U and O vowels and pronounced /dʒ/ when preceeding I, Y and E

Exceptions are usually only related to loan words, which is most certainly not the case for the acronym GIF.

So even though this is a general rule of the English language, how come you more often than not hear people pronounce it as GIF and not JIF.

Some people argue that they get the hard G sound from the word "Graphics".

But if this were really the case then JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) would be pronounced JFEG due to "Photographic".

So yeah, how do you pronounce it?

PS: I am extremly bored and don't have better means to entertain myself.

I pronounce it 'jif' meaning with a soft G. The whole reason for pronouncing an acronym as a word instead of reading it out as G I F is for speed and making it less of a sore thumb in a spoken sentence. I don't care what the creator or 'experts' say about rules they've made up for slang ways of pronouncing acronyms, I'm not going to dirty up my speech by pronouncing a hard G before an I when I don't have to.

Gif as it.

God knows if it's right or wrong, but who care...

There is no right or wrong, the very concept of pronouncing GIF as a word is slang. People just come up with rules to argue why their slang is better

An acronym is not spelled out, though. You're meant to say jif as a word.

What you're referring to is an initialism in which initials of words are spelled out individually when you read them out loud.

An acronym is by definition pronounced as a word.

If i were to pinpoint a problem it'd be that people don't even know what an initialism is and just call any abbreviation with initials an acronym.

Since GIF is an acronym, you're meant to read it as a word, just like JPEG.

My wording was a bit bad there. At the very least, it is still slang, and there aren't proper rules for slang.

But I included you in my Epic story that I wrote for batman's recent thread. You were not amused? =(

I pronounce it /gif/ not /jif/.

What if I just say G I F, each letter individually?

You're clearly the spawn of Satan.

I pronounce it /gif/ not /jif/.

It wasn't a high school love comedy, i was severely disappointed.

I'm disappointed in myself for not thinking of that either. You'll be in one in the sequel.

I give girls getting geysers gynecologic gifts.

In all seriousness, JIF is peanut butter, not a picture.

It's interesting to see that, while gif being pronounced jif is a 100% irrefutable fact, the rule of thumb for most people is to still say gif.

I wonder what caused this.
