Hard G Masterrace. Never submit :scottsune:

I've always heard it pronounced "giff", and I will always think of it that way, no matter how many times I'm told otherwise. Not really me being stubborn, it's just ingrained into my mind as "giff". Don't really get why people care if someone pronounces it differently, not like it really matters.

I say GIF. Why do I say GIF? Because acronyms in English (or any language for that matter) should be pronounced with the same phoneme their actual words represent.

You say "graphics interchange format," not "japhics interchange format."

End of story. I'm sorry Steve Wilhite is a moron who doesn't know how to speak properly. I'm sorry he decides to use a Latin/Italian pronunciation but make the acronym itself have an English meaning.

Except thats what the letter J is for... G = Jee

There are only three letters that I can think of that aren't phonologically different than the rest of the alphabet, but instead are a compound of them.

C = s or k

Q(u) = k(w)

X = ks

huh, apparently english has issues with the K sound...

I actually meant Gee = Jee, sorry about the mix up. xD

Pronounced like Geeze so I typed Gee without actually thinking of using J.

But then again J "dzay" in Jelly is "dzeh"..... but I wont pry any further..it's actually ridiculous to fight for this XD

You guys can invent your own graphic format, name it what you want, and then pronounce the name however you want. And once that happens, I'll even pronounce it the same way! Go ahead and get on that.

In the meantime, I'll just be over here, calling GIFs "jiffs", just like the guy who invented GIF and pronounces it "jif".

"Get" is one of the most common words out there. It's also 100% Germanic in origin, the opposite of what could be described as a loanword. The idea of "G" having 2 pronunciations is actually a "loan" from Romance languages.

Anyway, when it comes to English, a rule without exceptions is in itself exceptional. "Gif" just looks like /'gɪf/ to me. Both pronunciations are 100% valid. The guy who made .Gifs isn't a linguist; and, even if he were, that doesn't mean his pronunciation should be given preferrence. 'Authorities' rarely ever prevent the masses from going with what they feel sounds right.

Because it's an acronym, and not a word, it doesn't matter how it's pronounced.  You can simply say each letter individually.

Judging from people I meet every day, a better use of their time would be learning to pronounce English words correctly, such as:

pastoral

comparable

mischievous

volatile

respite

amalgam

and so forth...
