Im sorry, my precious DDs, your fate is in RNG-sama's hands -.- If you want to bet everything on your closing torpedo attack, then sure, go torpedoes. The thing is that DDs go crit at night most of the time, so if you also give them firepower weapons, they can go score you a kill with a critical hit. The usual setup is a primary gun and a torpedo. Something like that. It's been so long so I don't exactly remember.
