Abyssal Monkey Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Hmmm, I personally have a thing for Shin Sekai Yori, and I tout it as one of my all time favorite shows. It was by and large ignored on the season it was released, so you can look into it. There was C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control which I found entertaining because of how out there it was. Some people didn't like it, but I don't regret watching. Fate/Zero is the sequel to Fate/Stay Night that tells the story of the previous Grail War, pretty much a must see if you've read Fate/Stay Night. In fact, UFOTable are fanboys of Nasu's works and anything they animate in the series has stupid high production value, so I'm gonna toss in Fate/Stay Night (UBW 2014) TV series and the Kara no Kyoukai movies in there as well just because of the quality animation. Patema Inverted was a fun movie to watch, and reminded me of the movies I watched as a child. It was disney-like in that aspect. Shingeki no Bahamut was highly entertaining and basically was a shounen that stampeded progress all the way until the last two episodes where it finally became obvious how it was going to end. Like I said before, go to AniDB and MAL and sort by rating. Anything that doesn't contain the "ecchi" tag and is above 8 rating will be a good watch. These shows are pretty much THE gateway anime and are what most of the anime fanbase will recognize in an instant and be able to hold a semi-competent discussion on (as long as it isn't naruto, bleach, or one piece; if you see people talking about them, run!) As for mana there is not much i read but if i can recommend one it would be The Gate http://myanimelist.net/manga/67879/Gate:_Jieitai_Kanochi_nite_Kaku_Tatakeri Hope there is something between there that you like Quote

Zalor Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Since your into visual novels, I agree with the suggestion to watch Welcome to the NHK. Welcome to the NHk does an excellent job portraying the quirks of otaku subculture in a funny, and serious way. The show thus often goes for dark humor. If you're looking for something with really really good story and subtle/sophisticated writing, I would highly recommend Berserk and Monster. Quote

Soulless Watcher Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I would recomend my personal Holy trinity of anime (minus steins;gate cause it's a visual novel adaptation so you should probably go read that first). The other two would be Haibane Renmei- A perfect example of an anime that radically changes in meaning depending on who watches it. There is alot of symbolism and religous undertones that will get one thinking about life. WARNING: As such you shouldn't expect everything to be spelled out for you though, much like religion you have to find answers for yourself. Kara no Kyoukai- First off, good luck trying to find a legal copy cause the price tag is rediculous... however I would almost recomend doing so. The animation quality is GOD TIER, I have yet to see something that even comes close to it, sadly it is hard to find a decent stream of it online. There is alot of great action and philosophy, however if it has one weakness it would be its pretentiousness. It can get kinda rapped up in meaning of life stuff and it can grate on your nerves. WARNING: The movies are released in a non-chronological order, which may frustrate you, but trust me stay with it and you will not regret it. Other great anime that I'm too lazy to write details about. Black Lagoon - Pure action Girls und Panzer - Moe/Tank action Gurren Lagann - Mecha/Soinsaneit'sawesome D-frag - comedy Baccano! - action/story Durarara - action/story Hanasaku Iroha - Slice of Life Monthly Girls' Nozaki-Kun- Comedy Monogatari Series's - Shaft's odd animation style/eccentric characters (LOOK UP WATCH ORDER ON WIKIPEDIA) Quote

I'm more into fantasy and horror tbh though but up watch anything really Baccano, Monogatari, Kara no Kyoukai, and Haibane Renmei can be considered fantasy or horror. If it is horror you are looking for, you should definitely check out Higurashi, Psycho-Pass, and I suppose Another. Psycho-Pass is more like a cop-drama, but I feel like there is enough messed up crap happening that you would like it. I don't want to spoil Higurashi, but i'll just say you will need to stick with it awhile before any of the mystery gets cleared up. Another is a gamble, alot of people like it.... but, if you think about it too much the entire plot starts to unravel. Quote
