Lexyvil Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Watchmojo is a popular channel on youtube that usually uploads "Top 10 (Insert Subject Here)" videos on a daily basis and each video tend to harness quite a lot of views. They upload videos such as: Top 10 Protagonists in Movies Top 10 Retro Games Top 10 JRPG's and many other subjects regarding games, movies, music and more. Their official site is where people can vote for their favourite content on a suggested subject, and if an initial suggestion gets enough thumbs up, there's a chance that a video might be produced based on the top 10 votes. Watchmojo tend to be detailed in what goes into their videos. I'm thinking maybe they'll do a good job at describing what Visual Novels are. From what I saw, there has yet to be a video called the "Top 10 Visual Novels", therefore I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to help form a list of a possible top 10 visual novels or to vote so that we can contribute or provoke Watchmojo to make such a video. I'm also kind of doing this by hoping that 999 gets into that list (this is just a personal opinion, but you can say that I find it to be one of the top 10 best translated Visual Novels). I think if 999 is ever displayed on one of their Top 10's, it could maybe bring more newcomers to the series, raising the chances of having a Zero Escape 3~ But it can mainly help raise awareness of what Visual Novels are; there are a lot of people that never heard of that term or genre. What do you guys think? Quote
Satsuki Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 You know what will happen if an "outsider" try to talk about visual novel right.... I can already imagine what will be inside their list (Phoenix wright, katawa shoujo, F/SN, blah blah....) Quote
Soulless Watcher Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Personally I'm against the idea, people who are not already fans of visual novels have a hard time of understanding and explaining the medium to others. There will also be no solid consensus on a "top 10", vn fans tend to vary drastically in their taste. Quote
Fiddle Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I don't feel like writing lots of shizzle, so I'll just voice what most people's initial reaction would be: VNs are too niche. Also, I watched a few of those videos before, and I forget the reason, but I don't personally like them. It may have been historical inaccuracy or something. Quote
Lexyvil Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 I see, I was kind of hoping something like that would have worked. There hasn't been a lot of votes in that genre the last time I looked however, so I'm thinking maybe this community could be a large portion of the opinions. Then again, since they're not well known, I was thinking more about the ones that had good sales and taking into account the success of the most common ones that are available on the market. Maybe it could be the "Top 10 Recommended Visual Novels" or the "Top 10 Translated Visual Novels" (By that I mean official translations). Quote
OriginalRen Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Japan also calls visual novels "PC games," so the concept of a VN makes no sense to them when I explain it. Everyone views it differently I guess. Quote
Segai Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 The thing with visual novels is that they're a different kind of game with sub-genres. It's nearly impossible to make a top 10 because everyone has different tastes and they are so varied. It's like make a top 10 of games of all time, barely anyone will agree. I'd suggest making a Google survey (new form in Google Drive), listing the most popular/known games and having people select 10. Quote
Lexyvil Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 A Google survey could be helpful to better determine common preferences in what kind of VN people enjoy playing in general, but it's just unfortunate that it won't be mainstream enough to make a "hit" to simply show a handful of the population that there is such a thing as Visual Novels. It might not be as effective to introduce them to it that way so it's why I was thinking of using Watchmojo since they already have a very large viewership. Disregarding the fact that they do go by votes, a lot of their videos tend to be accurate in the end too. Then again, if Visual Novels were to become more popular, it would still probably be a pain for a popular channel like that to form multiple "Top 10 (Insert Sub-genre Here) Visual Novels" videos since there are not a lot of VN that are not meant for all-ages. I guess a problem like that could make sense. My initial idea was to increase the VN fanbase. There are surely other ways to show and teach what they are rather than letting newcomers accidentally discover them by stumbling, word to mouth or letting them find our online articles and reviews. Lexyvil Posted March 19, 2015 Author Posted March 19, 2015 http://www.watchmojo.com/suggest/Top+10+Translated+Visual+Novels I just made a suggestion page on there. It will kind of give an idea on which VNs had a considerable impact in the west based on the general population. I don't think making multiple lists based on sub-genres would be ideal yet since only a small fraction of people know what the initial genre is. Quote
Lexyvil Posted March 19, 2015 Author Posted March 19, 2015 Fun fact: I have played none in that list. Which ones have you played? I recently finished Steins;Gate and I'm now currently on Clannad (I don't know how long that one takes to finish yet) and I'll need to be recommended more of them after it's done for my "Next to play" list~ ^ ^ Have you played any that contains Sci-Fi, Mystery or Thriller/Suspense? These are my preferable sub-genres, but I'm sure I'll love most that's thrown at me ' v' Quote

The only two in that catalogue that I played are Baldr Sky and Unmei Senjou no Phi (both untranslated). Quote
