yanderechan Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 So new to the forum and i was just wondering... Does anyone read light novels (LN's) if so whats your favourite and a side question to this is, Do you perfer LN's or VN's (judging from it being a VN forum im guessing the latter) Quote
Eclipsed Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I don't necessarily prefer one over the other. I like VNs cuz the visuals, music, voice acting make the reading experience quite enjoyable. LNs, while lacking in the above, allow me to visualize everything in my head and that's enjoyable too. I will admit that I have a harder time 'settlling in' to a LN than a VN though. yanderechan 1 Quote
Abyssal Monkey Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 So new to the forum and i was just wondering... Does anyone read light novels (LN's) if so whats your favourite and a side question to this is, Do you perfer LN's or VN's (judging from it being a VN forum im guessing the latter) We have a thread dedicated to what LN you may or may not be reading. Personally, I like them both. A LN allows for more freedom of imagination while a VN makes things more clear and structured. As I'm typically rolling my BGM from my collection while I'm reading LN's I always get a little giggle when the music perfectly fits the situation. It happens surprisingly more than you would think, because what I pulled my BGM from is typically the same genre as the LNs I read, they match up surprisingly well. Quote
Tenkuru Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I'm a big fan of LNs, though I rarely read popular ones. My all time favorite LN would definitely be Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria. Others such as Gekkou, Sayonara Piano Sonata and Hikaru ga Chikyuu are honorable mentions. As for my preference, it depends on what I'm in the mood for, really. Like Eclipsed mention above, LNs lack colorful visuals along with music and voice acting. However, that also means that LNs do allow more freedom for imagination. Also (shameless advertising incoming), if you want some recommendations, feel free to check out my thread dedicated to under appreciated LNs. Link is in my signature Ayana and yanderechan 2 Quote
LinovaA Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I don't read many LNs... although I really should. I prefer VNs though.. because I love music. A soundtrack will help to engross me 10x more than normal. (Multiplier subject to change~) Quote
mbl Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 The only Japanese light novels I've bothered to read would be the Spice and Wolf series. Most are officially localized. Quote
Nyanko Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I don't read many light novels, I do have a backlog.. -_- The last light novel (if not the only one) I remember reading is Fate/Zero. Let's say that if a story was written in both VN and LN form, I'd go for the VN. I prefer VNs over LNs because I'm actually pretty bad at reading big walls of text. In VNs text appears line by line which makes it really easy and fast to read. I like LNs too, but it takes longer and more effort to read! Quote
yanderechan Posted March 16, 2015 Author Posted March 16, 2015 Fate/zero was my first one i read before Toradora i guess. i guess im basing this one the difference of reading behind a screen or reading on a book. I think both have there advantages and disadvantages but i was interested to see what people prefered. Like Tenkuru Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria is probabaly the corner stone of my LN's at the moment great mystery thriller and the concept of the characters and story is great and looking forward to the final volume when its released (two years laters still saying that) I guess another major point is the waiting on certain VN's series compare to a LN series where most VN's seem to come out all at once. The soundtracks and the voices for VN's i think seem to be a crucial part of what makes me enjoy the VN all that more (cherry on top of the cake) Favourite LN and VN series anyone? Quote
Abyssal Monkey Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Favourite LN and VN series anyone? Second post and yet I feel ignored. Index is by far and large the one I read for entertainment. I actually keep track of ~30 LN/WN series through my phone. Oh shit, I forgot about EC. I don't have a favorite VN series as there are so very few actually translated. If I had to pick a series, it would be SonoBira, ask me what my favorite VN is, and the answer will differ. Quote

Eiji actually mentioned that he's 40% done with volume 7 last November, so we can expect it to be released this year. EusthEnoptEron is also a very fast worker, so the translation should hopefully follow very quickly. Quote

Although i don't know whether it would be my kind of genre despite its massive reviews but yes I seem to read alot on my tablet LN wise and desktop has to be VN so LN is mainly on the go Eiji actually mentioned that he's 40% done with volume 7 last November, so we can expect it to be released this year. Abyssal Monkey Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Rumour had it he tweeted the other day that it had been completed (but he said this in out of context more than anything else) If he had completed it, that tweet would be on the BT forums by now. I think you might have gotten confused about it. He already has the story completed, with notes and plot, he just needs to write it. He's actually had it completed for a long time, he just never wrote it. Quote

Ayana Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I most definitely need to start getting more into Light Novels.. especially given the fact that some of the highly-regarded writers in eroge out there are now writing them. For example, I'm currently reading one titled 'Humanity Has Declined/Jinrui ha Suitai Shimashita/人類は衰退しました' and it's by the one and only Romeo Tanaka, who wrote such works as Cross+Channel and Saihate no Ima. Even from what little I've read of Jintai, it's nothing short of an absolute masterpiece, and many others agree. Not to forget mentioning how it's continued success shows with the fact that there's an entire anime adaptation available. I'm then guessing the other eroge writers who saw his or maybe another's success probably decided to jump on that bandwagon too. I mean, I was also made aware of the 'Saekano' series, which is by Maruto (guy behind White Album 2 and Parfait).. and etc. so I'm pretty sure this is a new world revolution or something (笑). In any case, I definitely recommend to the people who enjoyed their experiences throughout the eroge/VN medium to also check out some of the rather lesser known but great works in the Light Novel medium. Hakomari is just one example of that, because there's probably going to be more where that came from onwards. Although I guess it really sucks when you don't get any opportunity to listen to stuff like reading a "novel".. (; ̄д ̄) Yeah uhh, I think I'll stick to playing Japanese Porn Games most of the time in that regard lol. When I finally start another Light Novel, it's likely I'll have some music playing to accent it because I really like music. (music is a big part of what drives me to watching anime or playing these games, actually) yanderechan 1 Quote
Darklord Rooke Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 While I used to read light novels, I was never really a fan of the prose found in them. And because they had nothing else to fall back on I prefer VNs. Quote

ExtraMana Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Light novels in general are usually lesser to other mediums. That said I'm reading the Black Lagoon VN because the hole that end of the series compounded by the disappointing OVA I digress. Revy is the ultimate tsundere. Quote
Getsuya Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 I read both, every day. After quitting video games for good because they were taking up too much of my life I now dedicate most of my free time to either reading or writing. For reading I split my reading time between VNs and LNs. The LN series I recommend very heartily is Kyoran Kazoku Nikki by Akira (I mean you read it Akira but he spells his name 日日日 which I'm fairly sure is cheating). It's an amazing and fun series about a 'family' with one ordinary guy as the dad and his wife and kids are all bearers of cursed DNA from an ancient evil that has promised to destroy the world through one of its descendents. So our hapless hero has to try to make sure his whole family is always happy and content, lest any of them decide it's time to destroy the world. He gets little to no help from his scheming megolomaniac of a wife, and it also doesn't help that, all things considered, his kids haven't had very happy lives up to this point. It sounds a little dark but it's definitely more fun than emo, and it's a great break from your typical high school rom-com LN with a deadbeat loner as the protag. Another great series that's tons of fun to read is Yoshinaga-san-chi no Gargoyle, about a family who wins a dog statue that turns out to be a gargoyle, complete with magic powers. Gargoyle faithfully protects the family, and town, from all sorts of strange hijinks that happen. It's very light-hearted and will make you smile quite often. Quote
yanderechan Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 I guess its a case of whatever floats your boat... With me being out for majority of the time light novels seems to be more revolved around my life than visual novels per se Quote
AlphaCake Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 I can read LN's on my phone with the Baka-Tsuki app. VNs are quite difficult to get on a phone even with VNDS, as it doesn't have many ports. Also, it feels less awkward reading a wall of text than playing a VN in public. I enjoy both mediums, as I can read content a lot faster through LNs, but VNs are a lot more immersive with sprites, sound, and BGM. yanderechan 1 Quote
Nyanko Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Thats a big plus for LNs indeed. I feel more comfortable reading LNs in the bus and train than having a big colorful screen that's constantly moving. Colors and shiny stuff attracts peoples gazes... -_- Quote
yanderechan Posted March 18, 2015 Author Posted March 18, 2015 Especially if it's a hentai VN haha that on the train would be major awkward I feel... Me playing sono hanabira on a train or bus would be a problem to the public more than myself so LNs on public transport via tablet download pdfs from baka tskui and the vns stay on the desktop for home uses XD Quote
phersu Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I'm definitely getting the Kizumonogatari ln when it comes out in November. Quote
yanderechan Posted March 18, 2015 Author Posted March 18, 2015 It comes out in november in which language?! published by whom? Quote
