mbl Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Anyone interested in Titan Souls? It's a top-down Shadow of the Colossus-esc game that is being advertised as really challenging.. It's coming out on April 14th but a demo with 3 fights is available now on steam. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AV4Cd7wdpA I was pretty hyped for it and will definitely still buy it, but the demo has left me iffy as to how great of an experience it will be. The demo has three fights, all of which (Along with most of the fights shown in the trailer) follow designs I've seen before in Zelda games. Of the three bosses, two died in one hit and one -which had two phases- died in two hits. There was little puzzle to them, what you needed to do was obvious from looking at them. The difficulty stems from you having a very small window for the shots that kill them and that they kill you in one hit as well. Each of the demo fights took me a couple minutes to complete, with my final fights with each boss lasting a manner of seconds. Not original, not challenging, not memorable, not replayable. Hopefully the actual game will have more original boss designs that require a bit more than waiting for an opening and firing one shot. Even if it doesn't end up being a very memorable experience, from what I've seen of the demo it will still be a fun playthrough. Quote
Homaru Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I've finished the demo it was not what i thought it was going to be, but nonetheless enjoyable to play. Quote
mbl Posted April 14, 2015 Author Posted April 14, 2015 Game is out, and yeah it is about as disappointing as I was expecting. 7 bosses in (Out of the game's advertised 18 bosses) after a 40 minute play session, 10 minutes spent beating the 3 bosses from the demo and 30 spent beating the next four. I've decided to stop there for today, simply because I am more interested in playing... certain other games right now. Graphics: Minimalist pixel-art. Environmental art is as good as top-down, low-pixel art can get. Bosses look good, but out of the 7 i have seen 6 followed designs from other games to a T, and the only original one was noticeably the worst looking so far. Audio: Soundtrack is probably this game's strong suit Story: There is none, you're some kid who randomly spawns and is capable of one-shotting creatures much bigger than you. You run around murdering random titans because that is apparently the only way to open doors in this world. Gameplay: Controls are simple, you run around and fire/retrieve a single arrow, you have one shot to make with each boss which will either kill them or progress to their next phase. All bosses I have encountered so far follow, in some form or another, the "head towards the player. if they touch you, you die" architecture. Pretty much all of the game's difficulty comes from how awkward it is to make the shots you need, and it is pretty sad that I was feeling frustrated by the mechanics of the game after a 40 minute play session where I was making constant progress. The laziness of the boss design has been the most disappointing aspect of this game for me, considering it is a game all about bosses. If you're considering buying the game, definitely try the demo first and only buy it if you consider a game that will have 6 times as much content and little replay value worth $15. Quote
