Fucking love that game! Almost every year for the past 4 years I replay Castlevania Aria of Sorrow around Halloween time. Symphony of the night is also good, but for some reason I prefer Aria.

Edit: I'm not technically part of the gaming club, can I still post here?

Most frustrating thing in this game was being low in health and dying right before getting into the save room. :amane:

Backtracking isn't overbearing since those yellow portal points take you where you need to go most of the time. I usually kept my distance for a minute or two before dying on purpose so I could learn the boss's moveset. Just beat Balore and am currently at level 45. I never did figure out what that CON stat is all about, I just focused on attack and strength. Just out of curiosity, do the Curly and Devil souls do the same damage?

^CON raises defense

My favorite souls (excuse the poorly translated names, I'm playing the Japanese version so I don't know what they're called in English):

Red - Apprentice Witch: Kitty! And it does tons of damage to any enemy that is moving on the ground

Mini-Devil: This one is okay, but it's mainly fun because whenever Soma uses it he yells 'KIRISAKE!'

Blue - Medusa Head: Stop in mid-air? Heck yes. Makes getting on moving platforms insanely easy and it absolutely wrecks any boss that pauses in mid-air since you can pause right next to him and wail on him.

Persephone: Demon vacuum cleaner! Reminds me of Hunter x Hunter

Yellow - Collector. Nuff said.

I'm obsessed with spears for some reason, so I used the Lance for the longest time until I finally got far enough to start getting the special colorful glowy swords (like the poison one, the ice one etc)

I spent probably like 15 minutes trying to grind out Valkyrie's soul but it never dropped. I even got her rare(?) weapon drop but no soul. Some enemies just refuse to give it up. I even have my super luck-boosting soul slotted (Green Dragon, Luck mid-up) and no dice.

Easily my least favorite part of the game is after you get

double jump/slide

but before you get the ability to

sink in water

. At that point the map is very spread out with not enough teleport points so you have to run for hours just to find a dead end. I was convinced that I wasn't supposed to be fighting Death yet, so I ran around looking for alternate points only to basically explore every corner of the map and discover that yes, he was the only thing I could fight at the time.

I guess what I'm saying is after you get

double jump and slide

beeline for Death because any further exploration will just frustrate you.

Also the underwater section is a huge BS maze with too few saves and too many dead ends. I went about 15 minutes over my 3 hours mainly because I was stuck in that stupid maze for forever. I kept saying 'there's got to be a save just ahead, it'd be a waste to go back to the last one at the beginning' and pushing forward.

Not too mention you have to constantly switch between Undine and Skula when you're in the underwater sections of the map. Kind of a pain to keep having to go into the inventory and switch the souls every five seconds. Should have just been a passive skill IMO.

Here's my favorite souls.

Red: Valkyrie: I can't tell you how satisfying it is to see bones from Bone Pillars fly everywhere from being upper cut by a magical sword.

Red Minotaur: I mean, it's a giant spinning axe, what more could you want?

Blue: Devil: Whenever there's a long hallway, I just tear through everything with this soul! :wafuu:

Yellow: Nothing really. Maybe Head Hunter.

Isn't that what save states are for? Or are you actually playing on the GBA?

I went and bought the Soul Eater Ring that makes soul drops easier before I went soul farming, but even with that, some souls were still a hassle to get.

Incidentally, now that the thread is up are we allowed to plow through to the end of the game now?

I'm pretty sure we could always do that, you just couldn't spoil things.

Yeah, I'm playing it on the GBA. I had the cart lying around so I decided to just go ahead and put it too good use. Are gameshark codes able to be used on the emulator, like for gold and stuff like that?

I wouldn't know, I don't use anything like that.

Yeah, you can blow through the game if you like. Just try to avoid spoilers please. We have spoiler tags, so use them  :sachi:

I fought (boss spoiler)

Balor and Legion

back-to-back. Medusa Head's air-pause makes the first of those super easy since you can just pause in the air by their weakpoint and spam it. The second one was pretty boring. I just wailed on it with Beam Skeleton and it went down pretty fast. Happily I got the thing the above post mentions.

Actually I got all of those before I fought that boss. The weapon really helped since it was a huge damage boost over what I had at the time.

Also... I beat it. Best ending and all that. Huzzah.

It's okay if I post, right? If it isn't, may I please join the club? I have a longer history in these games than in VNs, so I believe I should be eligible in case of any requirements.

Wow, you fought the harder boss first.  That's impressive.  Did you get all the items in the side hallways by the lift after you beat

Balore

?  That puzzle with the D-pad was particularly fun ^_^  The first hallway section from the top really impressed me with how well they used area control to make the player have a very annoying time.  That second hallway section, though...fuck that.  Seriously, that was horrible.  Hated every second of it.

Have to say, so far, the game could pretty much lack a story and I wouldn't care that much.  The story is pretty underdeveloped besides setting up the player for the gameplay.  Aside from the whole "Dracula's mansion" thing and the random people scattered inside, I've yet to see much of anything.  Like I said, though, that doesn't really faze me much, since the gameplay is so fun.  It's a little disappointing, though.

Really? Not everyone fights it first? I always headed for it first thing, I loved beating the crap outta that little shit.

That D-pad puzzle was really fun, especially the last one. it was so exhilarating to find myself so utterly outmatched that I had to take damage no matter what happened. Even so, returning from the room beyond the hallway was the most hellish thing I'd ever experienced.

Seriously, though. The bosses were all so weak. The other Castlevaina GBA games were much harder, and that made it much more fun. However, AoS just has this... this mysterious charm about it, Soma Cruz and Julian Belmont are the best protags ever (SotN's protag not included, that dude's in a class of his own).

It was even more fun facing off against the rival moments before entering the final realm. Truly, the last boss was not even close to good enough. However, the rival was near godly for myself. Having such skills, even having such a smart AI, he actually forced me to take a super potion in the battle. I had yet to even do so once so far.

I just beat

the manticore

Why is everyone so far ahead, lol

Lol, that little shit. Patterns so easy to read, so easy to dodge, so easy to counter. I guess I was years ahead of most of you, I destroyed the game around two years ago.

I'm actually seeing how adept I still am at it, using nothing but Gram to fight all the bosses. Gram is so godly fast (even if its reach is short). Of course, nothing can beat Balmung and Claim His Soal, but that's the challenge. Use not something too weak, but use not something too strong either.

the game: it was kind of easy, just had to find better stuff and kill a boss to win the game.

map: very confusing, am only like 78% and if you want to go somewhere you have to bring a lot of potions to live.

story: i was confuse like the main character and hammer, why doesn't that guy just let us out!

I reached the arena and abysmal platformer skills are finally starting to fail me. I already had to swallow my pride and use potions on the Death fight. I'll probably still finish it, after lots of grinding and dying.

It's still really fun, but man I am bad at these games.

Yes but did you kill

the actual last boss?
