First Foray into Untranslated VNs

Man does that title make this seem important. Hate to disappoint, but it is not important at all. ;)

So recently I decided it would be a good idea to finally stop procrastinating on something I have been really meaning to do. I finally got off my butt and got my hands on Akatsuki no Goei and installed it on my computer. With my current Japanese level, I felt it would be a good one to try and work my way through. Not too difficult and not too easy.

I just felt like a moege wouldn't really help me as much as trying to struggle my way through something with a higher level of linguistic complexity. That kinda makes it seem like I am talking about the difference between a moege and things done by the developers Light, but believe me, I make no such mistakes. I am no pleb...

... I just really wanted to say the word pleb. Its like.. my favorite 'word' right now.

I have enjoyed it thus far, that is for sure. Kaito is a freaking AWESOME protagonist. I love him, in the manly not homosexual way.

I think I have spent a total of ten hours reading, but I would be really surprised if I made it even an hour in as far as 100% fluent in Japanese person is concerned. However, I have definitely felt my vocab improving, even if it has only been three days. I have picked up a few new words and phrases, which made me pretty happy.

Incoming Digression:

Now a little confession: I never finished RTK. I kinda... gave up. :wahaha: Nothing past 500 kanji was sticking, so I jumped ship after 1500~ or so. I considered THAT almost done and almost done the kanji pile. Heh heh heh. So yeah, basically the last like... ~1000 kanji are lost on me. It definitely works for some people, but I don't think it is the best learning method for myself.

I didn't really fully give up, I just set the new kanji from 25, to like 3 a day. I had to reset my anki deck so I could account for that. ahaha. I am going to keep it on the backburner though, as I am going to learn the rest of my kanji through VNs, and any of the obscure ones will eventually be mopped up through RTK.

So yeah, its pretty good. Maybe I will do day by day entries about my experiences with it. You can see in post time how bad my Japanese failings are. :sachi: We'll see how I feel after today's playthrough.

It was more of a stumble than anything else. Heh heh. :P

 

The toughest part, other than motivating myself and believing that I was good enough at Japanese to start, was just getting used to reading in an entirely different language. It was so strange to suddenly be going at a snail's reading pace as opposed to my normally quite brisk one. 

 

After I got used to reading in another language, the transition was virtually painless. It's just like, the first five hours or so that kind of hurt.
