Chinese anime dominates this season. Ling Long 2nd Season is a long awaited sequel. Yujin Xingzhe is a very promissing survival adventure in an unusual world, and I'd put even that over the only honorary Japanese masterpiece of the season - Kowloon Generic Romance . 1. Witch Watch ウィッチウォッチ [Bibury Animation Studios] (Finished 2/26) Tags: Shounen Urban Fantasy Comedy, Fantasy Nico Wakatsuki has finished her six years of witch training and is moving back to town by herself. As a new witch, she must choose a familiar to accompany her. However, unlike the other witches, she wishes to pick a non-animal familiar. There's no better companion than Morihito "Moi" Otogi—her childhood friend who happens to be an ogre. Morihito is vehemently opposed to being her servant, but he reluctantly accepts his fate after learning that a curse would revert him into a strange cow-tiger hybrid were he to disobey a witch's order. Due to Morihito's father leaving for a business trip and Nico's mother remaining behind in the Witches' Holy Land, the two teens find themselves living together under the same roof. While Nico is ecstatic to be living with her crush, Morihito finds that her magical antics and overall clumsiness create more problems than solutions. With a prophesied disaster to befall Nico within the year, Morihito must do everything he can to protect her as her bodyguard while also upholding his duties as her familiar. Another nonsense that is supposed to be cute. For the thousandth time - stupidity is not cute. Overall Rating: 5/10 5. Saikyou no Ousama, Nidome no Jinsei wa Nani wo Suru? The Beginning After the End 最強の王様、二度目の人生は何をする? [Studio A-CAT] (Finished 12/12) Tags: Isekai, Reincarnation Fantasy The story follows the strongest king in history, Grey. Although he possesses unparalleled power, wealth, and fame, there is no one who stands by his side…and he trusts no one. One day, Grey suddenly meets his death and is reincarnated as a powerless infant named Arthur in a world of magic. Surrounded by a loving family and companions, Arthur starts to experience joys in this new life that he never knew in his previous one. However, during a journey, his family is attacked by bandits... Thus begins his second life, filled with love and adventure! Above average magician reincarnation anime, but we've seen enough of these, and there's still no clear goal seen ahead, so can't recommend it at this point. Overall Rating: 6/10 6. Vigilante: Boku no Hero Academia Illegals My Hero Academia: Vigilantes ヴィジランテ -僕のヒーローアカデミア ILLEGALS- [Bones Film] (Finished 1/13) Tags: Shounen Super Power Action Living in a superhuman society, it is hard to feel special. Even more so when the spotlight only shines on professional heroes, those legally authorized to use their special powers known as Quirks in public for the greater good. Kouichi Haimawari grew up aspiring to be a hero, but with a mediocre Quirk like "sliding" that ties him to the ground, he soon came to the conclusion that he could only ever admire them from below. Despite this, Kouichi finds contentment in using his Quirk to carry out day-to-day good deeds, such as returning lost items and helping the elderly cross the street. However, Kouichi's tame life takes a swing into the turbulent when he is rescued from a back alley brawl by Vigilante, or illegal hero, Knuckleduster. Seeing hero potential in Kouichi, Knuckleduster enlists his help in tracking down the source of a dangerous drug known as Trigger that boosts the user's Quirk at the expense of their rationality. Set in a time before the events of the original story, Vigilante: Boku no Hero Academia Illegals follows Kouichi as he chooses to don the reputation of a villain and become a Vigilante, operating in the shadow of the law to prevent crimes from taking to the surface. Kowloon Generic Romance 九龍ジェネリックロマンス [Arvo Animation] (Finished 13/13) Tags: Seinen Adult Cast, Workplace Romance, Sci-Fi With its flickering streetlights, moldy back alleys, and noisy populace, the Second Kowloon Walled City, despite the squalor of its already-demolished predecessor, evokes a special kind of nostalgia that its residents find endearing. Amidst the walls of this fading yet beloved landscape lives Reiko Kujirai, a 32-year-old realtor deeply in love with her coworker, Hajime Kudou, who is two years her junior. Though they have their differences, the two get along well enough to experience the joys of the walled city together. However, everything starts to fall apart when Kudou, half-asleep, suddenly kisses Kujirai—seemingly reciprocating the feelings she has yet to confess. But when Kudou explains that he had mistaken her for someone else, Kujirai finds herself drawn into a series of events that lead her to a past she cannot remember. I'm used to the fact that if something clearly says something in the title, it has to be the opposite way in the work. FL image is clearly stolen as I've seen it before at least couple times, still a cool image. The sci-fi element makes it really memorable and distinctive. Overall Rating: 7/10 8. Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman 片田舎のおっさん、剣聖になる [Passione, Hayabusa Film] (Finished 12/12) Tags: Action, Adventure, Fantasy Beryl Gardinant, a self-proclaimed "humble old man," is a sword instructor at his dojo in a rural, backwater village. In his younger years, he dreamed of glory as a master swordsman, but those days are long behind him. Out of the blue, he receives a visit from a famous former pupil who brings him world-shattering news—he's been appointed as a special instructor for the knights of the Liberion Order! With his life now turned upside down, Beryl travels to the capital and reunites with some of his former students: elite knights, an ace wizard, and even an adventurer who's attained the highest guild rank possible. But why do they all want his tutelage?! As far as he's concerned, they clearly don't need him anymore. Can Beryl live up to his new position? And will he ever get a moment's peace away from his adoring students?! The closest thing it has been for ten episodes is harem, and some minor development only happens in last episodes. That's nowhere near enough in story department for a masterpiece. Overall Rating: 6/10 9. Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive? 男女の友情は成立する？（いや、しないっ!!） [J.C.Staff] (Finished 3/12) Tags: School Comedy, Romance A boy and a girl pledge lifelong friendship in a small town junior high school. The relationship between the two, who are destined to share a common dream, has passed two years without any particular development. Himari Inuzuka, a bubbly girl who has yet to find her first love, and Yuu Natsume, a plant-loving boy who enjoys flowers, still spend their days peacefully as best friends in the gardening club in the second year of high school. "If Yuu can't get married, I have to take responsibility." "I'm having trouble now because after Himari said that, your brother began calling me 'My brother-in-law!'" However, when Yuu reunites with his first crush, the gears of their relationship suddenly go out of sync! Will Himari be able to escape her "ideal friend" now that she has found love? Basically, copycat of my dress-up darling, but without otaku tilt or as nice characters, so it really pales in comparison. Overall Rating: 6/10 11. Haite Kudasai, Takamine-san Please Put Them On, Takamine-san 履いてください、鷹峰さん [LIDENFILMS] (Finished 2/12) Tags: Shounen School Comedy, Romance, Ecchi Takane Takamine is great at everything she does, and her magnetic personality makes her the envy of everyone. She gets good grades, excels at sports, and even manages to become student council president during her first year of high school. But Takamine has a secret—she possesses an ability called "Eternal Virgin Road," allowing her to redo past actions and achieve a different result. While this might seem like a decent skill to have, Takamine must pay a price to activate it: she has to strip off a piece of her lingerie. After getting an imperfect score on a test, Takamine begins to remove her underwear during class and is spotted by her average and weak-willed classmate Koushi Shirota, who is bewildered by the sight. However, the very next instant, things reset and Takamine's test is now perfect. When Shirota decides to confront Takamine about her previous test score, she reveals her ability to him and blackmails him into becoming her "closet," making him carry around extra lingerie and put them on her. Her goal is to be able to use Eternal Virgin Road as much as possible in order to stay at the top of the school hierarchy. Left with little choice in the matter, Shirota accepts, starting an oddly intimate type of relationship with the most popular girl at school. As a teasing anime, it does its function, but overall it is absolutely not enough for a masterpiece. Overall Rating: 6/10 12. Kijin Gentoushou Sword of the Demon Hunter: Kijin Gentosho 鬼人幻燈抄 [Yokohama Animation Laboratory] (Finished 3/?) Tags: Historical Action, Adventure, Fantasy After Jinta and Suzune ran away from their home as children, they were taken in by Motoharu—the virtuous sentinel of Kadono Village—and his daughter, Shirayuki. The settlement was ruled by its shrine maiden, Itsukihime, whom only a select few were allowed to interact with. When Itsukihime passed away, Shirayuki was appointed in her place. Wishing to stay in contact with her, Jinta worked diligently for years and was finally selected as the next sentinel. As the protector of the village, Jinta's duty is to eliminate any threats. One day, he encounters a demon in a nearby forest. At the end of the battle, the demon makes a proclamation about the destined ruler of all demonkind. He attaches his severed arm to Jinta, turning him into an unaging demon man. By the time Jinta comes to, Kadono is on fire. Suzune has transformed into the demon from the divination, and due to a series of misunderstandings, she murders Shirayuki and flees. Devastated, Jinta cannot forgive Suzune for her actions; he departs on a journey to find her. As Jinta travels around Japan across the eras, he endeavors to protect as many people as possible from aggressive demons. In his quiet moments, he contemplates what he should do when he once again faces his childhood friend. Episodic detective action cases, something like samurai witcher. I just don't find any interest in here as I see no lingering big story. Overall Rating: 6/10 13. Isshun de Chiryou shiteita noni Yakutatazu to Tsuihou sareta Tensai Chiyushi, Yami Healer toshite Tanoshiku Ikiru The Brilliant Healer's New Life in the Shadows 一瞬で治療していたのに役立たずと追放された天才治癒師、闇ヒーラーとして楽しく生きる [Makaria] (Finished 5/12) Tags: Medical Fantasy Life hasn't been kind to Zenos. He was born in the slums, and his dirt-poor background has denied him almost every opportunity. After an encounter with a healer, he throws himself into studying to become one and finally catches a break when an adventurer invites Zenos into his party. Zenos is thrilled—so thrilled, in fact, that he's willing to put up with his teammates treating him like garbage. They fail to appreciate his talents and ultimately kick him to the curb, claiming he's outlived his usefulness to them. Now bereft of money and out of options, Zenos decides to put his self-taught skills to use elsewhere and opens an underground clinic. Word quickly spreads about the brilliant healer working incredible magic in the city's shadowy underbelly. Even the royal palace is taking notice... Can Zenos buck the odds and carve out a life for himself in a world that's spit in his face? And can he save the lives of the patients who wind up on his doorstep in the process? It's purely tertiary recycled material of Party kara Tsuihou sareta Sono Chiyushi, Jitsu wa Saikyou ni Tsuki and A-Rank Party wo Ridatsu shita Ore wa, Moto Oshiego-tachi to Meikyuu Shinbu wo Mezasu after OP protagonist gathers intial harem. By the 5th episode I got overwhelmed by my disgust over plagiatry, so can't even explore and find out if story develops in any good way. Overall Rating: 5/10 14. Shiunji-ke no Kodomotachi The Shiunji Family Children 紫雲寺家の子供たち [Doga Kobo] (Finished 1/12) Tags: Seinen Love Polygon Comedy, Romance The love between brother and sister. The love between man and woman. That which is most forbidden is most unyielding. The two sons and five daughters of the Shiunji family shine like brilliant gems, each with intelligence and beauty in equal measure. And with the pedigree of their wealthy father behind them, how could they not be the talk of the town? Eldest son Arata has spent his life being tossed around by the whims of his colorful sisters, yet a little teasing won't stop him from valuing his family over anything and anyone else. But when his youngest sister turns fifteen, their father reveals a long-hidden secret of the Shiunji "siblings" and knocks Arata's world off its axis... Boring harem. Lack of individuality is pierced right from the start, so I consider even one episode of this trash to be enough. Overall Rating: 5/10 15. Aharen-san wa Hakarenai Season 2 阿波連さんははかれない season2 [Felix Film] (Finished 1/12) Tags: Shounen Love Status Quo, School Comedy, Romance Ever since the quiet and timid Reina Aharen enrolled in high school, she has made new friends and even started dating her classmate Raidou. When the two begin their second year, everything seems to be going well, as they are seatmates once more. Soon after, a transfer student named Riku Tamanaha joins their class. Unbeknownst to Reina, the outgoing and stylish girl is actually a childhood friend she separated from years ago. With Raidou's support, Reina is able to rekindle their friendship. Although they have grown closer, Raidou and Reina still struggle to communicate due to his overactive imagination and her difficulty with expressing herself. Nevertheless, the eccentric couple continues to brighten up the lives of people around them as they enjoy each other's company to the fullest. Sequel. Overall Rating: 6/10 16. He is perfectly satisfied as the party's helper—until the other members kick him out and replace him with a stronger ally. Left without a way to provide for himself, Kurt begins searching for a job. With his job prospects limited by his lack of combat ability, Kurt gladly accepts any work that comes his way. During one such job, he meets Yulishia, an adventurer formerly employed by the royal family. Surprised by Kurt's impressive work, Yulishia discovers that he is no ordinary boy: Kurt possesses an astonishingly high aptitude in a variety of non-combat fields. Due to these talents, a court official tells Yulishia to offer Kurt a high status in the kingdom that would allow him to live in peace for the rest of his life. When Yulishia informs Kurt about his potential rank, he brushes off the offer, refusing to think of himself as above other people. Still unaware of his real power, Kurt continues taking as many odd jobs as possible, which might just make him a pivotal part of the kingdom before he even notices it. OP protagonist again, just in everything non-combat. And again with pretty plagiarized concept. Ventured into second episode to see if any sort of interesting story starts to unveil eventually, but, alas. Overall Rating: 5/10 17. Sentai Daishikkaku 2nd Season Go! Go! Loser Ranger! Summer Pockets [feel.] (Finished 2/?) Tags: Romance Summer Pockets is set on an isolated, rural, and peaceful island on the Seto Inland Sea called Torishirojima, which has a population of about 2,000 people. The protagonist, Hairi Takahara, grew up in an urban setting, but after an unpleasant incident, he uses the recent death of his grandmother as an excuse to come to the island to take care of her estate sale. Once there, he gets to know four girls, who are the focus of the story: Shiroha Naruse, who forgot her summer vacation; Ao Sorakado, who is pursuing the legends of the island; Kamome Kushima, a high-class girl looking for a pirate ship; and Tsumugi Wenders, a younger girl trying to find herself. I always try to ignore the fact that authors are from Key so that my judgement is not biased. But if I try to find something similar... it would be Air, as it's again Summer and again MC comes to town with strong deja vu sense, but it's now done in more traditional charage way. And I seriously dislike Air. Summer pockets is nothing but a spree of constant sickening self-repeats. I only hope that Key authors impotency gets acknowledged so that I do not need to give them all those constant second chances that they diligintely screw up with 100% success rate. Overall Rating: 5/10 19. Ore wa Seikan Kokka no Akutoku Ryoushu! I'm the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire! 俺は星間国家の悪徳領主！ [Quad] (Finished 3/12) Tags: Harem, Isekai, Mecha, Military, Reincarnation, Space Action, Fantasy, Sci-Fi In his last life, Liam lived as a moral, responsible person...but died deep in debt and betrayed by his wife. Reborn into the ruling family of a vast interstellar empire, Liam knows that life is divided between the downtrodden and the ones who do the stomping, so this time he's going to take what he wants and live for himself. But somehow, things refuse to work out that way. Despite doing his best to become a tyrant, Liam's decisions lead to nothing but peace and prosperity for the empire under his rule, and he just gets more and more popular! Harems are trash in majority of cases. Concept of selfish tyrant ending up benevolent for servants is nothing new. First three episodes are slow and absolutely non hooking or inspirational in any way. No incentive or desire to explore further. Overall Rating: 5/10 20. Kanpekisugite Kawaige ga Nai to Konyaku Haki sareta Seijo wa Ringoku ni Urareru The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom 完璧すぎて可愛げがないと婚約破棄された聖女は隣国に売られる [TROYCA] (Finished 3/12) Tags: Fantasy, Romance In the kingdom of Girtonia, the Adenauer family has been giving birth to saints for centuries. The eldest, Philia, is considered a prodigy in the field, capable of solving any problem in no time. Meanwhile, the youngest, Mia, is not as extraordinary as her older sister but has charmed the entire country with her lovely personality. Despite their striking differences, Philia and Mia share an unbreakable bond. Sadly, Mia is the only person who truly cares for Philia. Because of Philia's expressionless face and aloof demeanor, their parents always scold her, and the citizens complain about her. Moreover, Julius Girtonia, the second prince and Philia's fiancé, would rather have a more amicable girl as his wife-to-be. For that reason, he cancels the engagement and sells Philia off to the neighboring kingdom, Parnacorta, which has recently lost its own saint. Nice graphics, setting and character designs are wasted on mystery detective with brain dives that have been used in lots of media for decades. Together, they spend what feels like an eternity maintaining the hotel, despite having no guests. As they await the return of their owner and the day humanity reappears. Now, a small miracle is about to change everything for Yachiyo and her robotic colleagues. With a boring setup like this leaving no room for the story, it should be exceptional to impress. There's no interest for me in episodic space hotel stuff. First introductory episode is relatively fresh as has no customers, but second has first alien guest, so starts to feel like remake of 21 Emon. The girls head out to capture the lovely sights of Japan, experimenting with gadgets beyond photography and film equipment, and of course, chomping on the local delicacies along the way! Setting does not really matter for CGDCT as long as process is made fun somehow. Well, it's not packed with events like Lucky Star, not funny as Strawberry Marshmallow, has no music like K-On. All I see is slow boring SOL trying into moe with photo theme that I can't stand. No good humor is spottend in first episodes, so it's being a torture for me. Overall Rating: 5/10 34. Even if her projects get turned down again in the future, Chika plans to journey around Japan with friends old and new. Every single tag here makes my eye twitch. Pilot episode was no good either. One thing is clear: For those without a god to serve as their guardian, life is a constant struggle for survival. Thus begins the epic tale of a young boy's ascent into a vast world filled with magic, bloodshed, and mystery. If I tried to find a comparison, I'd say Utawarerumono with elements of Solo leveling, and both are trash in my evaluation. It's slow, cheezy, sterile and stupid, but at least story seems to be slightly better than that of those two. All the bad factors considered, it's not worth further time investment. When suddenly, a mysterious girl appears... The fated child inheriting Gear blood–and the mysterious girl who despises Gears. Their meeting would shake the world. When he woke up, he found himself reincarnated into a young man named "Liu Fengmang" who is imprisoned in the White Mansion. His sect, Lingxiao Pavilion, was also in dire straits. In order to find out the truth about the backlash of the spirit Kun and revive his sect, Fan Lingxiao takes his existing spirit pets and embarks on a new adventure with Gu Ling, Cheng Xi, and Yue Tong. Only trying since animation is not CGI, at least not entirely. But all those sects, spiritual pets duels and reinarnations are so alien to me that can't swallow this bs. Overall Rating: 5/10 55. I Byeol-e Pil-yohan Lost in Starlight 이 별에 필요한 [Climax Studio] (Finished 1/1) Tags: Adult Cast, Space Romance, Sci-Fi Nan-young is a scientist whose astronaut mom failed to return to Earth when things went awry during her Mars probe. Nan-young has always dreamed of exploring space too and longs to go to Mars in hopes of finding a trace of her mom. Her dream comes true when she is selected as one of the astronauts for a Mars probe project. Before she blasts off though, she meets Jay, a musician who also fixes retro sound instruments. It's all thanks to an old turntable that Nan-young inherited from her mom. Had higher hopes for Korean Netflix, but this is horrible. Overall Rating: 5/10 56. Ling Long 2nd Season Ling Cage Season 2 灵笼 第二季 [YHKT Entertainment] (Finished 3+/12) Tags: Action, Sci-Fi Second season of Ling Long. The best Chinese series got sequel after so many years - very surprising and thrilling. Still great and promising even though impact can't compare to original. Overall Rating: 8/10 57. Xian Chong 仙宠 [Thundray] (Finished 1/18) Tags: Historical Fantasy, Romance One hundred years ago, in the battle of Mirage Land, the fairy Tianjuan killed the Lord of Mirage with her own hands. However, Tianjuan's soul was incomplete and she lost her memory of the war. After the war, Tianjuan came down to earth and to serve as the landowner in Cangshuo. She adopted the fairy pet Li Xiao, which looked like a little black bird. Then the war goddess and the little black bird teamed up to solve a case. Behind a series of strange murders, they found traces of the mirage monster returning to the land of Cangshuo! As Li Xiao transforms, Tianjuan discovers that there is a possible connection between her dead lover Shao Weili, Li Xiao, and the Lord of Mirage whom she killed... All I see is mystic detective. Overall Rating: 5/10 58. Shinsei Galverse 新星ギャルバース [S.o.K] (Finished 1/1) Tags: Space Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi Long ago, harmony across the galaxy was maintained by a sacred star known as the Mother Planet. But that peace was shattered when the Mother mysteriously exploded and vanished without a trace. In the aftermath, the galaxy plunged into chaos and conflict. Yet from the scattered remnants of the Mother Planet, new beings were born—sentient fragments known as the Galverse. Now, these Galverse girls, each imbued with extraordinary powers and an unstoppable gal spirit, rise to confront the evil organization "Space End Society." As they battle across the stars, they begin to uncover the truth behind the galaxy's collapse—and the fate of the Mother Planet itself. I've little interest in style, and plot of this sci-fi action mahou shoujo is far from outstanding. Overall Rating: 5/10 59. Takopii no Genzai タコピーの原罪 [Enishiya] (Finished 1/6) Tags: Shounen Psychological Drama, Sci-Fi A squid-like creature, known as a Happian, leaves his home planet with the desire to spread happiness across the universe. He lands on Earth, but quickly finds himself in danger of captivity by its inhabitants. Fortunately, he is found by an unsmiling little girl named Shizuka Kuze, who feeds him and names him Takopii. Feeling indebted, Takopii decides to do everything in his power to bring a smile to her face. The task is easier said than done, however. Shizuka is bullied by her classmates, she does not have a father, and her mother is never home—though the gravity of these issues flies over the naive Takopii's head. Even so, Shizuka does have one source of happiness: her dog Chappy. The connection Shizuka and Chappy share only increases Takopii's desire to make the girl smile. While Takopii's attempts to lift Shizuka's spirits lead to unintended consequences, he is determined to take things into his own tentacles, test his understanding of human beings, and achieve his goal of spreading happiness. Bullying and cycled time travel are two horrible concepts. Add to that suicide, and I don't want to touch this poo ever again even if only first episode is this harsh. Overall Rating: 5/10 60. Ke Jin Wanjia Wealth and Wonder 克金玩家 [Qingxiang Culture] (Finished 1/26) Tags: Video Game Action, Fantasy In the future world, the virtual game "Epoch" developed by Chu Group has attracted worldwide attention for its perfect immersive experience. However, on the eve of the game's official launch, the game developers Chu and his wife disappeared mysteriously. In order to find clues about the whereabouts of his parents, the rich young man Chu Yi, under the guidance of the humanoid AI Chaos, spent 30 billion krypton gold to enter the game upgrade adventure. In the process, Chu Yi gathered a group of player partners who fought side by side. After several efforts, he finally found out that his parents' disappearance was related to the Fantasy World Organization. In order to find the whereabouts of his parents, fight against the Fantasy World Organization, and "save" the Era World, Chu Yi launched a series of ridiculous and unimaginable krypton gold operations, embarked on a journey of playing the pig and eating the tiger, and a wonderful battle between good and evil began. Huangshen Lu Zhi Linglong Shan The Ruins of Kunlun Linglong 荒神录之玲珑山 [Niceboat Animation] (Finished 1/12) Tags: Adventure, Fantasy Story of a young boy Xiaoyu who accidentally enters Linglong Mountain, a place where people can "resurrect the dead", in search of a master. Together with the elephant master Tianyi he uncovers the truth about the strange transformation of the fairy grass. Bright nonsense. Overall Rating: 5/10 62. Yujin Xingzhe Embers 余烬行者 [D.ROCK-ART] (Finished 5+/15) Tags: Action, Sci-Fi On the planet after the disaster, the young boy Ye Yu went to Embers City for an assessment in pursuit of his dream. He faces numerous murderous intentions and mysteries, and the truth behind them is impossible to unravel. Post-apocaliptic Sci-Fi survival in complex world is my sweet spot. So far Embers looks very similar to Swallowed Star. It's definitely entertaining enough so far and has a story, something that's neglected so often nowadays. Overall Rating: 7/10 63. Lao Ma Yu Xiao Bai 老马与小白 [-] (Finished 0/1) Tags: Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi Lao Ma, whose full name is Ma Lei and whose online name is "Ma Mou Ren", is a well-known game planner. Many of his mobile games have dominated the top of the "Lemon Best-selling" TOP list for many years. Lao Ma's production style is actually not well received in the game circle, but big companies are still flocking to him, and the core lies in the word traffic. Lao Ma's games have no breakthroughs in mechanism, and most of the games he planned are just reskins, but Lao Ma has a deep grasp of people's hearts, and often a simple small change can make players enjoy krypton gold. On an ordinary and easy-going morning in 2021, this well-known planner was fatefully transported into the mobile game world he designed himself. At first, he went smoothly with his understanding of the game, but gradually things began to collapse more and more. The bad design he made in order to cheat produced all kinds of amazing and strange changes. Since this comment, I finished Love's Sweet Garnish 2. I am still finding ways to avoid Livestream 2, even though I should have finished it months ago. Love's Sweet Garnish 2 is definitely an improvement over its predecessor. It adds more variety to the plot, puts more time into the scenes that take place at school, and continues to provide me with wholesome scenes. However, it still has its flaws. If you are not captivated by the story or the cute characters, then this VN will bore you as none of its jokes landed for me. The closest this VN was able to get me to laugh was a funny line read from Ciel who has the better route in this VN. Koron's route was a little boring. As for the afterstories, I thought that they were fine. Overall, better than its prequel, but it is not a VN that I will remember for a while. In the end, get the Love's Sweet Garnish duology if you want to read some relaxing and wholesome VNs with little to no stakes. Currently, I have just started reading ACE Academy. It is a VN that I read nearly 5 years ago but stopped for no reason. Now, I want to finish it. Maybe I will finish Livestream 2 first.

Since this post, I have finished Azure Striker Gunvolt and Oneshot. I have nothing new to say about the former. As for Oneshot, I like how it made me care about these characters despite the game's short length. Some of the other games I played are the following: - One Step from Eden (A game inspired by Megaman Battle Network. The gameplay was tough at first. It took many tries before I finally saw one of the endings. It is a good game that I will come back to in the future). - Wonder boy: Asha in Monster World (A fun platformer with mechanics that are easy to understand. I just wish that later events in the story did not make it impossible to go back to earlier levels and collect any missed collectables.) - Hades (The game to take all of my time atm. Like Eden, it's tough at first, which is expected from a roguelike. Now, I can beat the game even if it gives me a hard time during certain moments. The different weapons and endless character dialogue keep me motivated to play the game. There is an epilogue that I need to see. Once I see it, I will move on to another game.) -Dragon's Lair 2 and Space Ace from the Dragon's Lair Trilogy. I can imagine these games being frustrating to play at an arcade since you need to react quickly to the glowing buttons. Dragon's Lair 2 requires you to collect 10 objects to reach the final section. Space Ace is fun with a mechanic where you can choose whether or not to energize Dexter/Ace. This triggers new scenes. Overall, short but enjoyable games that are carried by their visuals. I just started Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling and Celeste. The latter game is kicking my butt. As for Bug Fables, I am captivated by its visuals. Sadly, I have not had time to play Marvel Rivals or any fighting games. The internet at my current place without an Ethernet cord is awful.

Interesting seeing that Maeda chose Clannad based on his misunderstanding there, and by the way the Irish word for family is just 'Clann'. As for Kanon, it's the musical term with what I can pick from the Wiki is 'contrapuntal (counterpoint-based) compositional technique that employs a melody with one or more imitations of the melody played after a given duration', although Sayuri did explain it in 2006 anime episode 14 as 'it repeats the same melody and crescendos gradually, peacefully, and beautifully' while Pachelbel's Canon playing in the background. As for why Maeda chose Kanon as the title, well I don't know.

Dungeon crawler vn hybrids were pretty common for a while, with Bunny Black coming to mind as a localized one while Ninetail specialized in the genre, producing the Gears of Dragoon series. As the author mentions, the genre inevitably struggles to tell and sell a story. This is because the gameplay is inevitably grindy (even compared to ancient jrpgs) and repetitive. This is especially the case with games where dungeon layouts are randomized and the plot is primarily enjoyed outside the main gameplay. To an extent, the souls-like games that were made popular by Demon Souls took things in a different direction, actually doubling-down on the gameplay focus while settling most of the story in the form of dungeon-found easter eggs and cryptic statements by the very occasional npcs. On the flip side is the Persona series, which indulges in heavy storytelling while also being a dungeon crawler series (especially 3 onwards). It's parent series, Shin Megami Tensei, is even more focused on dungeon-crawling aspects with the story more minimalized (though V proved the exception). Generally, one needs to keep in mind that dungeon crawlers are an umbrella genre that branched off from traditional rpgs, going in their own direction. The expectation of expansive stories comes in great part from this origin, as many of the people hooked on more modern (post-2000) dungeon crawlers came from jrpg-addict origins and then went evangelistic about them to other gamers after.

Into The Depths Dungeon diving into winding mazes filled with danger and treasure has been a persistent fantasy and a genre of game seemly at odds with visual novels due to its high emphasis on its own mechanics. Looking at titles like Etrian Odyssey might lead to you to believe that this is a genre which does not care about story. However, among them are a subset striving to reach for a greater narrative complexity and these choose visual novel sections as their means of do so. For them its a method of presentation in line with its already regular and orderly construction and can be dropped in and out of without it feeling too out of place. They are uniquely positioned to capitalise on the space between the themselves and their visual novel elements by offering the story progression as an important form of momentum over the long term. Let’s conquer another floor and find out how this hybrid works in practice. Regular And Orderly If there is one thing which defines the Dungeon Crawler it is the way its structure adheres to a rigid framework. From start to finish, everything has a regular and orderly place within the game and it rarely moves outside of these boundaries and relies on these established mechanics to push complexity forward while making the changes understandable for the player. As such the limited presentational elements available to visual novels feel right at home alongside this restrictiveness and slots in as another one of the game’s systems. The way it can be used as a complete narrative tool all to itself or be overlaid on top of the active game world gives it the modular nature to respond to the Dungeon Crawler’s need for story without having to grind everything to a halt. It is also closer to the feeling of the gameplay than more extensive 3d cutscenes since it reflects the orderly nature of the gameplay experience rather than appearing entirely detached from what has come before. Its relatively simple production makes it suitable for the bitty but long narratives these kinds of games like to tell and it provides the necessary flexibility to keep the focus squarely on the Dungeon Crawler half of the game while still having a meaningful tale to invest the player into. The Space Between Not everything a game wants its needs to be spelt out in only either mechanics or narrative, sometimes the gap between each can be played with for an interesting effect. Due to the regular nature of how the parts of a Dungeon Crawler interact and the somewhat abstract nature of their mechanics, there are a lot spaces where the player is asked to imagine what must have happened. For example the grid based tiles, the game does not expect the player to actually believe that the whole party is crammed onto one tile and move one space at a time and instead it is presented as a representation of what is really happening in the world used for the sake of gameplay. It is into gaps like these that some games have chosen to place things implied but never spelt out in order to let them sit at the back of the player’s mind to linger there until it is time to bring them into the light. Let us examine a hybrid which makes use of the technique to see what the practical benefits of it has for all parts of the title. Mary Skelter 2 is a game which revels in the things which are present and absent and the gaps between them. In particular it utilises its re-framing of the timeline from the first game while omitting key elements and making the player question exactly what has gone so wrong to result in this outcome. Here is a place the gaps between the visual novel and the other game systems is put to good use by subtly implying the importance of what is missing in their interaction. The comparison between Jack in the original game and this one is the strongest use of this implication since the narrative presents events which lead up to this change and yet does not directly expand on what that means for a long time. All the while the battle systems showcases the far more violent and temperamental nature of this new Jack and the unspoken gap between these two presentations of the same person creates a tension that causes the player to be more aware of it. Progression As Momentum Providing a sense of forward movement within a game is a major way in which its retains the player’s attention for the long term. For Dungeon Crawler’s this can be a difficult task due to their inherently repetitive nature and the way their structure encourages multiple dives into the same dungeon leading to these aspects blurring into one another in a way which can lead to a loss of momentum. Enter the visual novel sections, these give an important feeling of context and progression to the work the player is putting into the dungeons. By their nature as narratives they have an in built sense of forward momentum as all stories are inherently moving towards a conclusion and so anything attached to it gains the same effect through proximity. Spacing these visual novel chunks over the long term and making sure they are regular enough to be a constant presence but not so frequent as to interrupt the follow of the game’s other systems is key to ensuring the effectiveness of its impact. Here the modular and regular nature of the Dungeon Crawler gives it a helping hand, it is already constantly moving between its distinct and segregated elements so the transition and presence of the visual novel does not seem at odds with everything else and is instead just another of the plethora of options it can dive into. Take Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk for example, this is a highly mechanics focused title where the repetition of dungeon diving is core to its appeal and there is a clear divide between the dungeons and the surface where all the preparation happen. This is title which risks falling into a loop where the player feels as if everything is the same so Coven of Dusk brings in visual novel sections to alleviate this issue. In order to keep them in line with the rest of the game they are mostly confined to the surface sections where the plot relevant characters stay while the puppets they control do all the dungeon exploring. Doing this prevents the narrative from being too invasive into the game’s core appeal while also having access to the sense of progression offered by its inclusion. Coven of Dusk is not a story centric title and yet the inclusion of this element helps the overall package maintain its needed pacing. Conclusion Narrative has always been an element which Dungeon Crawlers have struggled with and so they often turn to visual novels for help. At first it might seem that the two are incompatible due to the regular and orderly nature of the Dungeon Crawler but this actually works well with the limited presentation of visual novels so it can easily slot into this existing framework. Momentum is a key factor in the importance of visual novel sections to the experience since it add a feeling of progression to what would otherwise risk being a repetitive environment. The gaps created between the two halves due to their regular nature work as a great place to interact with what is left unsaid in the narrative or mechanics and imply ideas which come into relevance later. This hybrid showcases how much visual novel elements can contribute even in a style of game which is otherwise mechanics heavy.

ef is an objectively good visual novel that is written well that feels like it has a point even to its most plodding sections. It is a mostly serious story of imperfect people making imperfect decisions based on imperfect information. It has a few standout sections, but also has a few weak sections. The music in particular is outstanding. Reading it is an experience that feels unique, but I struggle to say it was very enjoyable or provided a lessen or food for thought. This will be completely spoiler free, so there will be some parts of the story or bits I outright don't mention, and that is on purpose, otherwise the few spoilers will be marked. The writing is solid throughout, and I'd like to call particular attention to the slow slice of life moments, since they did not feel like they were there just to be filler, but rather to give background and - at times - levity to what is largely written as a serious story. These moments ground the reader in a sense that these are real people living real lives rather than simple characters in a story. I especially appreciate that these people are not perfect, they make dumb mistakes. The younger characters in particular make decisions you often would see or may have made yourself when you were younger. Chapters 1 and 2 in particular (Miyako's and Kei's stories) are ones I particularly enjoyed. There are some stereotypes in these two chapters, particularly surrounding Kei being childishly violent with that being played for laughs, that will not click with everyone though. Chapters 3, 4, and final chapter felt like a tonal shift, so it was clear there was a different writer handling most of it. I'm sure some people would prefer those chapters more, but I found them to be somewhat melodramatic at times and at odds with how grounded the first two chapters were. These were no longer normal, imperfect people dealing with relatable situations, but stereotypical dramatic story beats that were foreshadowed a ridiculous amount of time in advance, to the detriment of the story itself. One part I find incredibly odd is The music in ef is absolutely amazing. Every BGM track adds to the scenes, and I can't overstate how important good BGM is to a visual novel. I had no issues running the game in a modern Windows 11 system. It has high production values, including a lot of backgrounds, sprite variations, lip sync, and sprites that are actually placed in the backgrounds at various depths so you can "see them moving" in the environment. There's even walking scenes where they move around as if they're actually walking next to the person. In particular I was incredibly impressed by the camera scenes where you can see the camera counter counting up in real time as you read. Overall, ef is an objectively good visual novel. But it isn't perfect, and it may not be enjoyable for everyone. If you're in the mood for a serious dramatic story, I'd say give it a try. At least read the first tale and know that the latter tale gets more serious and dramatic than that.
