Every VN company has specialties, in terms of genre, character types, and art styles. AXL tends to prefer a generally cheery atmosphere, replicating its own art in every VN it makes, and creating an oddly nostalgic atmosphere within its games (though this is probably an accident, rather than on purpose). It tends to have some sort of action, whether it is actual violence or just sports, as part of the story, and the protagonists tend to be capable, if not perfect. Akabeisoft2, which did Sharin no Kuni and formed Akatsuki Works and Shangrila (the makers of the Akatsuki no Goei series), tends to provide a facade of slice of life, with a much darker edge underneath. Their games are mostly story-focused, with a few exceptions, and the general quality is very high. Light is, oddly, a company that is the very reverse. It's stories tend to be dark, with even the brightest and most cheery atmospheres carrying a blood-soaked edge beneath the surface. Exceptions, like Kaminoyu (which was made by the group that eventually was shoved into the Sweet Light subsidiary) are exceptions to the rule. Nitroplus was originally an action-focused utsuge company, but with the advent of Sumaga, their games both changed in atmosphere completely and dropped in quality overall. Muramasa was the last truly great game done by the main team, and the Science series (Steins and Chaos) appeals to a completely different audience and was done by a different team. Clochette is also known as 'Oppai R Us' by some of us English-speaking VN-readers. They produce high-quality fantasy charage with decent stories... and lots of big-breasted girls. Yuzusoft tends to produce a wide variety of games, but their specialty lies in the creation of high-quality meldings of story and charage style. Dracu-riot is a perfect example of this, melding a high-quality story with a strong and amusing cast of characters. Will, which is the largest VN conglomerate in Japan, is responsible for everything from Propeller's action games (Ayakashibito) to the lowest style of nukige. Probably at least a third of all the highest-rated VNs in Japan were produced by this company over the last decade or so. Key... we all know, primarily produces character dynamics-driven nakige. Their games include ridiculous levels of moe appeals, which have contributed to their popularity both over here and Japan. Minori... produces a wide variety of games, but the one major quality they share is a sense of surrealism that produces a sharp difference in reactions amongst readers... in other words, you either love a Minori game, or you hate it viciously. Eushully produces gameplay-VNs, including the famous Ikusa Megami series, Kamidori Alchemy Meister, and they also served as a producer for a much lower-quality maker's games on a number of occasions. SofthouseChara produces gameplay-vns with a strong humorous aspect, which mostly seems to deliberately parody games that take themselves more seriously. Even so, their games seem to possess better stories than the ones they parody, for some reason. Alice Soft, the producers of the 'Dai' series (Daibanchou, etc) and the Rance series, are famous for fusing the ridiculous and the serious in their gameplay-focused VNs. Like Minori, they are definitely an acquired taste, and as many people despise their work as like them. August produces mostly straightforward charage, moege, and nakige, with a slightly more story-focused leaning. However, they've yet to make what is considered a 'kamige', as they always manage to fall just short of what they are trying to achieve through a given game. Front Wing, which produced Grisaia, is normally a nukige company, which made its production of that series incredibly startling. Cotton Soft produces games that range from horror/mystery to simple mysteries, usually with a science-fantasy or Cthulhu Mythos aspect to them. 11eyes produces medium quality fantasy, that tends to be visually appealing but varies wildly in terms of writing quality. Lump of Sugar produces charage, nakige, moege, and story-focused VNs with high-quality art. While some of their games are not all that good, they have quietly built up a list of high-quality games over the last decade. Applique, which produced Fake Azure Arcology, as well as Tasogare no Sinsemilla, is a subsidiary of Effordom soft, which consistently produces high-quality games. Studio Ryokucha, which is mostly inactive, produces middling to high quality moege and charage. Feng produces middling and low quality moege. Until a few years ago, Purple Soft produced mostly middling quality moege. However, with Mirai Nostalgia and Hapymaher, they experienced a sudden surge in quality that startled many. Candy Soft, which is also the owner of Minato Soft (producer of Majikoi) is responsible for a large variety of games, mostly humorous moege. However, they tend to be less than predictable with the themes of their games, so it is a good idea to take a quick look at anything they put out. Pulltop is one of Will's many subsidiary companies, mostly specializing in middling to high-quality nakige and charage. Propeller is another of Will's subsidiaries, producing primarily action VNs, that tend to have really good character dynamics, unusual art styles, and great stories. I could go on forever, but these were the ones that came to mind immediately. Feel free to ask me about a particular company, if you are considering their games. There is a good chance I've at least 'tasted' their games, so I can give you a decent idea of what to expect.12 points

Ever 17

Ever 17 Ever17 is the tale of seven individuals who come to be trapped 153 feet within the underwater marine theme park, LeMU. During an apparently normal day at the park, a massive accident happens, placing almost half of the facility underwater. The path to the surface and the communication lines are cut off. In addition, LeMU is under constant assault by severe water pressure, limiting time to find a means of escape to 119 hours. Escape is not the only concern, however; many questions arise as to the legitimacy of the accident and whether or not those trapped there were brought there for a purpose. Walkthrough Info If you want to avoid using this walkthrough as much as possible then my advice is to focus on one girl and try to be as nice as possible to her all along while ignoring the other. This is usually not very hard with conversations, but when you gets to choose where to go around in LeMU on a few occasions it can be hard as you dont know where each person is. So use Quick save and quick load before each choice and just reload the last save if you don't go to the area where your chosen person for romance is. The same way is applied to avoid the second possible romance which you should avoid meeting then. ***Game Routes*** Here is some general information about how the routes are laid out and why certain choices were made. Tsugumi Happy Ending Sora Happy Ending You Good Ending Sara Good Ending Coco True Ending Other Route Endings Takeshi's Endings The Kid's Endings True Ending This Walkthrough is based on this written by Denethor0 with small improvements made by me. Thanks and props go to Denethor0!! I hope you guys enjoy this wonderful game.1 point -
From what I heard, even though Monobeno is rather high on sexual content overall, the majority of it comes as omake/after stories in the Happy End (it's a sort of a remake/fandisc combo). The base story shouldn't be that hardcore. I got the Happy End release though, for obvious reasons. ಠ‿ಠ1 point

This is my first post to this topic, and since it concerns video games, i'll contribute myself. I've seen many, many wonderful games, but if i had to speak about my favorites one, i have a short list. In no specific order : -Command & conquer : Tiberian sun. The sequel for one of the first RTS, created by westwood "RIP", the best command & conquer and one of the most satisfying RTS ever made, a good story with two factions struggling in a desperate world, worth the play even if you aren't fan of this genre. -Halo CE; The first game i've received with my old xbox, and even if don't play that much now in consoles, i still like this game, this game is like a journey...a great journey. -Fallout 2. One of my all-time favourite RPG, the story is good but this game has far more things to deliver than just a main story, the secondary quests are A-WE-SO-ME, you have a lot of possibilities to do in the game, you can also play like Mahatma Ghandi and still finish the game if you want. -Spec Ops : The Line. A generic TPS? another game about war? always americans who save the world? you play a hero? forget everything you know about shooters, and welcome to the hell of war, the shooter part is decent and the brutality of the kills is cool, but the story is well developped, and filled with plot twists, do you believe that war is a game? play Spec Ops :The Line and uncover the psychology of a Delta Force member and his team, and don't forget to enjoy your visit of Dubaï. -Half Minute Hero : SMNCUB and Half minute hero : the second coming. Bored of neverending rpgs? Of grinding for 5 hours in order to aquire an iron stick? then try this : save the world...in 30 seconds. This RPGs is a big 16-bits parody of RPGs and is more like a runing game, you have to stuff yourself, do some quests, grinding and finally beating the evil lord...in 30 seconds, but don't worry, you'll be granted a wishful help..from a money-loving time goddess, fun and enjoyable as hell. -Steins;Gate. Do i need to say something? So that's all folks, i'm sorry if my post is too long, since it's my first post in this topic, but video games are a passion for me and i want to spread my love of this medium.1 point -
My best guess personally is they use an average reading speed, a constant, let's say 200 words per minute (below average adult, middle/high school level) and then by knowing how many words are in the vn they calculate the length it'd take to read which would be equal to: number of words divided by wpm. The reason why you take less time often is because the average reading speed is lower than the average adult's reading speed. That's my personal theory. Auto mode uses a set wpm speed, hence why it's not wrong to say they use it as well.1 point

VN Companies, their nature and habits
overkill373 reacted to Funyarinpa for a topic
Not as a company, but as a writer, Kotaro Uchikoshi's works seem to keep being put on hold/cancelled due to funding(or lack thereof). I heard 12Riven was supposed to be the first of a trilogy, which never happened, Remember11 ran out of funding midway through so it had a ending, and now I need to see that Zero Escape 3 gets released before I die, which is not greenlit by Spike Chunsoft because it is "not profitable enough"... *grits teeth*1 point -

Not stupid at all. The Mass Effect Series changed me as a person as well. In many ways. Very similar to me in that regard, I've played through it many times but I've never been able to do full renegade. Always paragon with maybe a few renegade choices here and there. The renegade interrupt with Kai Leng was pretty cool, I have to say. I chose Tali as well. Tali-waifu for life, man. xD She's very cute and comes into her own in her way. Great character overall. And yes, the Quari-butts are pretty hype. Funny enough, I accidentally saved both races my first time playing ME3 and didn't know that was really hard/rare to do until way later, when I was talking with one of my friends about it xD And you share my same love for Citadel. Best DLC ever made for any game. Pure fan service, but I don't care. In fact, my love for Citadel led a friend of mine to direct me to my first visual novel, because he said it was basically Citadel in a longer game. It wasn't, because you can't replicate that feeling, but you know. I'm also a huge fan of fighting games.I play everything from Street Fighter to Tekken to Soul Cal to Mortal Kombat. Any games you're maining right now? (And a fellow huge fan of the Souls series too)1 point

I don't get you at all. You are making problems where there aren't any. If you are playing eroge, and don't want to read h-scenes- then just skip them, hold CTRL or whatever. It's that simple. If you would translate a VN someday - do a full translation with h-scenes, and let the people choose for themselves. It's that simple. If you don't want to translate h-scenes, just choose a non-ero VN or a full ages version. It's that simple. Why are you making a fuss about it on forums instead? You have too mych free time or what?1 point

It is exactly the same. The ending and the sex scenes are both integral parts of the storyline. And while it may be true that removing the latter is easier and will usually cause less damage, it will cause damage (especially when done by an incompetent translator). Just for argument's sake, I'd say that in your average moege/charage, a well-written sex-scene can actually contribute much more to the story (in terms of relationship development) than a generic happy ending. For me, sex (preferably, but not necessarily explicit) is an integral, and perfectly natural part of romance. Most of the time, relationships that end on holding hands feel incomplete to me (and often they feel unrealistic). In some rare cases, I found them about as unsatisfying as an axed, cliffhanger ending. This is not even slightly sarcastic - that's honestly one of the main reasons why I usually can enjoy a pure romance story in 18+ VN, while in tamer formats, I often find this genre simply annoying. If for you H-scenes are nothing but a fap material, well, that's just YOUR point of view. Now, who is the actual pervert here, huh?1 point

Translating: Is it ok to cut H scenes?
astro reacted to monkeysrumble for a topic
Calm down everyone, this is suppose to be a discussion about cutting h-scenes. Insulting the person you're arguing against isn't the correct way to debate, if you're unable to keep yourself under control you shouldn't be arguing in the first place.1 point -
I don't know what you're trying to accomplish here, but I've only seen you repeating your opinion as answer to every post in this discussion you started to be honest. Personally I enjoy VNs for their story and not the H-scenes, I do not mind them though and just see them as something that is there, they are part of the story in my opinion, even if they do not contribute anything to it. I don't really like how you say pervert, which may actually refer to a lot of people that are in this forum, and how you're basically saying their opinion doesn't matter because they are perverts. If you're not willing to broaden your view, there is no point making a discussion here.1 point

At the same time, this one is for images you "like", as opposed to Steve's collection or "the cutest image you've ever seen". I think it's different enough to work. Here's a few contributions from me : ). Not all VN-themed. (From "Little Bunny Foo-Foo") Inspired by a sudden plot development in the VN Rewrite, which I'm enjoying very much. Inspired by Fate/Stay Night, which I'm replaying on my Android tablet. I love this game to the depths of my soul. This is my experience in Calculus I, Calculus II summed up in a three-strip comic. ( I ended up getting good grades... but holy cow, what a nightmare) Isn't that heartbreaking!?!?!? Inspired by Achebe passing away today.1 point
