Well it's finally done. In side the spoiler contains a literary analysis of Mai Kawasumi and Sayuri Kurata from the visual novel and anime Kanon. I explore the complexities of their friendship through analyzing them as individuals. I don't want to say any thing more because of spoilers. Speaking of spoilers, if you have not watched the Kanon 2006 anime, or read Mai and Sayuri's routes in the Kanon Visual Novel then you have been warned. However, if you read Mai's route without reading Sayuri's, I personally wouldn't stray away from this paper as Sayuri's route is only around an extra 30 min - 60 min of original text. So I don't think you would be spoiling yourself from much, but in the end it's your choice. This paper does not spoil any other character routes. A few notes about how I incorporated quotes: 1) Non-Directional Translations created the English patch for the Kanon visual novel, so my quotes are of their translation. 2) After I finish a quote I cite the character's route by writing their name, and then I include the in-game day that it was said. For example: if Mai said "I like Usagi-san", and the in-game day was January 15th. I would write it like this: Mai said, "I like Usagi-san"(Mai, Jan 15). This is significant because... (It's not).

I don't think it's my country's fault to sell such limited variety of goods and services. First, anime has little to no coverage. There are no anime focused channels in my country. There used to be one but it was taken down (still don't know why). The only anime that airs here is licensed by some cartoon TV Channels and they're dubbed in portuguese. And these anime are stuff like Naruto, Fairty Tail, One Piece, etc. So it's pretty understandable that the population has little exposure to the medium unless they try searching online on their own. For example I go to a convention and there's literally 50 Narutos and 20 Sakuras and 100 Luffys and <insert other mainstream character>. Because that seems to be the only stuff the majority of people around here watch. And thus the stores reply to their fanbase needs by focusing their merchandise on mainstream stuff. There's just little to no room for variety here because TV Broadcasters are not interested nor does anyone else seem to be. I tried talking to some people at the events too, to see if there was some nice social factor to going there, maybe develop some friendships even, but all most people could talk about was the most hyped shows that are blowing up in the season and get coverage everywhere. You know, the ones that everyone already knows about and everything's already pretty much been said and every discussion becomes incredibly reduntant. The most interesting person I met was this lesbian that discussed yuru yuri and madoka magica with me. I'm serious. It's kind of depressing but it's reality here.

Originally, I had posted the idea for a different game in a thread seeking a translator, however after much discussion with zoom909 (thank you for his help by the way), he and I decided that we will be doing a totally different game altogether. They live with their mother and are located pretty close to the high school he and the twins go to. So, seeing that he'd be living alone otherwise, they decide to have him live with them in the meantime. There's also a prestigious all-female school nearby; this being the case, several students/teachers live in the same neighborhood as the hero's childhood friend; thus the rarely seen male presence begins a bit of an uproar as awkward, hormone-charged interactions begin. EDIT : Ahaha, I didn't need to make this thread XDDD The talented Jiichi, the one behind the cool program Visual Novel Reader, has updated VNR to support PSP games runing on PPSSPP, and Sakimichi made a post on it as well as other tutorials on how to get the text hooker set up. I also managed to make everything work, croll down and you'll see screenshots of my findings. A couple days ago I discovered this program a user on LJ made that works as a text hooker for Daiya no Kuni no Alice ~Wonderful Wonder World~ PSP game emulated on JPCSP. They wrote their own text hook using cheat engine since ITH and AGTH don’t work for PSP games, and I confirmed that it indeed works for the mentioned game. I also tested it for a couple games of other companies, like Idea factory, and even though the text hooker program DnKnATH worked only for that specific game, the lengthy workaround using cheat engine worked for every game I tried. The steps seem simple enough, so I was wondering if any of the programming savvy people here would give the idea of making an universal emulated PSP game text hooker a shot. Such a text extraction program for PSP games would greatly help people who have difficulties playing PSP games without the help of machine translators. (I hope this is the right section to post this. Forgive me if I'm mistaken) 1st pic is of the DnKnATH [program at work, and the other 2 show how text is extracted manually using cheat engine.

I believe I've found an exciting new VN on Steam, just let me check if it "qualifies." VNDB requires 3 things to be present before a game is classified a "Visual Novel." Firstly, the game needs to use the novel narrative. Secondly, the story needs to continue uninterrupted for a significant length, and lastly it needs to conform to either the ADV or NVL style. Well HAPPY DAYS because "Vlad the Impaler" qualifies on all fronts. Isn't that just awesome! So without further ado, let me introduce everybody to this new visual novel on Steam.

Because I live right next to Japan, there is actually a lot of knowledge and love for otaku stuff. Visual novels have not been heard of though, and there is only a couple of anime/manga/light novel shops, which even so are limited to only funimation dubbed junk. There are no events I can think of over here.

Almost non existent here, there's a couple of shops that sell some goods but they're very limited to mainstream stuff (Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, etc.) So yeah i'm better off ordering from online stores from other countries than trying to find merchandise here. There's 2 major events that happen per year and even those events are very niche with little to no variety in content, I've gone to both and wasn't really too impressed with anything. Then there's really minor stuff that doesn't get much coverage and are more like meets than anything else. Conclusion: It's not nice to live here if you're looking for anime goods or living the otaku life.

i posted this stuff so many times wish people would just randomly view other qeustion topics.

There was a thread a while back that discussed another game which is using a similar engine. A tool called will_con should be able to extract the text from the scripts. You can find it under item 009 over here. To use it, put the game's Rio.arc file in the same folder as the will_con tool and run it. You'll see a bunch of txt files which contain the extracted text from the game scripts. Since will_con can only handle extraction, you'll have to look elsewhere to re-insert a translation.

My reference is directed towards anime subtitles. The fan translation scene for anime is larger than manga and thus you're more likely to run into groups who produce high quality work. Manga scanlations have always been a minefield when it comes to quality and consistency as the task of translation bounces from group to group and some groups translate from Chinese raws. Buying anime direct from Japan carries a much heftier price tag than the U.S. release. The Sakurasou blu-rays from Japan have 3 episodes per disc and each disc runs about $85, while the U.S. is ~$60 for half the series. There is a difference in quality between the releases, but for most folks, it should not be discernable. But if you're buying the direct import, you should have more of a collector's mentality anyway, especially those massive price tags on the box sets (The only box set I will likely splurge on is the Miyazaki one if they ever put tthat together). Even with my income, I don't think I could digest spending $500-$600 for a 24-26 episode series that is only available in Japan.

I'll go ahead and link you (or whoever is helping you) to the Data Extraction Thread, where you can find some tools to extract the data of .arc files. And I'm kind of guessing here, but I've found that se.arc usually contains sound effects. I've encountered se.arc twice I think, and both times it contained sound effects. But I could be wrong. Anyway, good luck with the translation!

One thing that really pops out in that powerpoint are a lot of american flags. This makes this whole operation kind of hypocritical because it's clear they're not really trying to make it available for everyone, just the english speaking countries (or just america it seems) The rest of the world are probably just some random Gaijin to them and they could care less. They figured out america is a big country so it could earn them some more extra revenue. Because they're not suffering from terrible loss, I hate the term loss they used, it's not a loss because they didn't earn it and then lose it, it's potential sales, because the anime industry is earning them money, they're just trying to suck even more money out of it. Because the people who have to rely on fansubs/scanlations probably don't even have the chance to buy their product even if they wanted to, that's the sad reality of things. You know the other day I wanted to buy a limited edition DVD set of Love Live which is one of my all time favorite series. And guess what I got? We're sorry, it's not available in your region. Well f*ck what am I supposed to do? And I can't even import it because the DVD itself literally does not work in my region. I'd have to resort to buying the original Japense DVD that i can't enjoy because i'm not fluent in the language. And this does not end with goods. I'm not allowed to watch a ton of my favorite series on streaming sites like Crunchy simply because of where I live. Crunchy even makes these big announcements on how the rest of Europe (UK excluded) is not going to be available for a certain series sometimes. That's why I am either forced to pirate stuff or spend obnoxious amounts of money I do not have just to import some things since most things are not even available at all. All this fansubbing and scanlation aren't just for america, they're for the whole world. That's why I appreciate them and that's why I use them, because it is literally my only option unless I buy the actual Japanese product that I'm not able to enjoy since i'm not fluent in the language. Taking down fansites and then focusing your supply destribution to english speaking countries only is incredibly hypocritical to say the least.

This topic has been a bit of circle jerk for obvious reasons, but I'm not entirely sure why everyone thinks that this will have no effect. One of the major causes of piracy is lack of a legal method to obtain the material in question. Another major cause is that the price tag is some obnoxious amount. If the Japanese government is going to be providing legal methods to obtain such material, and going to make it actually affordable, then this IS going to affect piracy. I'm not saying that is going to "stop" piracy or anything like that, but I would be very surprised if it won't at least curb the growth, if not outright eliminate some piracy sites.

Well, I can only say, they are years too late. Today anime is distributed mostly by torrents and other distributed ways. It perhaps worked back when people downloaded things through direct connect. But thanks to pirate-hunters the downloads have left those fields. The torrents will be intact, and new indexing sites will pop up, it's like gardening in a forest. And they'll probably focus on the most mainstream material, which pops up faster. And personally I don't see VN/eroge targeted at all.

The saddest part is that many fansubbers produce a better product than some of the companies that purchase rights. Netflix: I was browsing the limited anime selection they had. Pretty much every anime they had was subpar video quality, no subtitles during the OP/ED (much less karaoke effects) and the subtitles within the actual episode was that atrocious yellow serif font with the black outlines (Took me back to the 1990's subtitles on VHS). Amazon: Same issue with the subtitles. There's also putrid video quality. I was taking a look at Clannad and High School of the Dead looked worse than playing some of my PS1 games on the PS3. Other series were actually completely out of order. Hulu: Larger selections but not that many newer titles Cruncyroll: Simulatenous broadcasts, some niche titles, but the library could be bigger. But I'm 27 and can afford the actual purchase. The only thing I may download are unlincensed works or episodes of shows currently airing. Else, I can push harder and faster to be better at Japanese.

The biggest losers here are the "outside north America" fan base. Let's face it, they don't give a shit about us. I would be highly HIGHLY surprised if they actually did anything for us...

I think it's important to the site's integrity to make sure licensed material stays off or gets taken off, since all that'll ever come from it is trouble. When stuff gets licensed it means Fuwanovel has done it's intended goal of spreading knowledge about the game; The added publicity ensures that the game will be well seeded already - we're not talking about niche games here. What I would propose instead is for Fuwanovel to try and be a more approachable version of both the TLWiki and VNDB: Keep the Grisaia sub page, remove the download link and guest comments and possibly add news regarding the official TL's status. Best of both worlds, since unlicensed games will be available for download, additional traffic will come regarding the official translation, and Fuwanovel makes an effort in trying to be an informational instead of a pirate site. It already doesn't really feel like one since the need to constantly justify the pirate agenda just vanished with Aaeru. It can focus on being all about VNs, everyone's love for them and making sure the culture, games and information about ongoing releases get spread. I'm all for the removal of the torrents, but take this incident and try to refocus over it.

Its clear to me that the site leadership now has its head so far up its own ass it can't realize how a basic economy works. Steve, Fuwanovel will be cutting into sales from Sekai, sales they can ill afford to lose as a new company. Provide a free option, and I promise you most people will go for the free option. Only the people with principle will actually buy the priced option. Kaguya, just because people will pirate these games, doesn't mean Fuwanovel should aid them. Let them go other places. Fuwanovel wants to be different, but right now, TL Wiki is doing more than Fuwanovel ever did. At least they have the common sense to remove licensed stuff. Rest assured I will not stop fighting you guys on this until I am either banned, or things change. Last summer I could not afford ef, so did I go and pirate it? Absolutely not. I saved up enough until I could buy it. Same with Kara no Shoujo. Hell, I bought 4 total Steins Gate Limited Editions for people among other VNs. These things are a luxury and not a right.
