  1. I honestly don't like this attitude from MangaGamer. They got burned on ef not because it was fan translated first, but because they completely failed to adequately market it. ef was a lightly popular anime, they could have tried to get fans of the show to pay attention to the VN release, but they didn't. They could have tried to push it to fans of romance as it's a fairly serious romance title, but they didn't. They could have advertised it at common otaku sites like 4chan, but they didn't. They did literally no external advertising for it whatsoever and only told people about it through their own site and newsletters. No shit it failed. They now use this negative experience to campaign against fan translations in general, claiming they hurt the industry. The failings are on their end. When JAST is given a fan translation, they polish the hell out of it and release it better than ever before (the ef script was barely changed in the MG release) and advertise the hell out of it. You could see Saya no Uta ads at a lot of common otaku-frequented sites. MangaGamer should exercise some self-reflection before criticising others. Their message pretty much comes off as "please stop". Not "don't translate titles from our partners" but "don't release any complete patches for any VNs at all because it makes contract negotiations hard". Meanwhile, Doddler, their twitter idol, is working with Arudoc to release complete translations for multiple games, Maria is working on a complete Rance Quest fan patch, and Cafe ostensibly will finish Aoire Rinne some day. The behavior of their own staff goes against what they say. They should either get their own ducks in a row before standing on a soapbox or shut up, preferably the latter. I will also say that fan translations obviously have very many benefits for the industry. They suggest that all fan translators only translate trials. I would have never read my first eroge, Fate/Stay Night, if there was only a trial patch available. I would never have given any eroge company a penny of my money if it wasn't for multiple complete translation patches that drew my attention. The industry is still so niche that it can't survive without a thriving fan scene. I can guarantee that MangaGamer would be nowhere if fan translations weren't around and they'd be in serious trouble in the future if all fan translations suddenly ceased. They may seem like an evil to MangaGamer, but at the very least they're a necessary evil as they provide the lifeblood of the industry.

  4. Just translated this whole book. It's been a while since i translated anything major, but this was too cute to pass on, and it wasn't too hard to do either with such small dialogue. I'm still not back to full translator work or anything, but it was nice translating something cute for a change. Porno Switch is coming out in a week! https://www.fakku.net/manga/porno-switch-english It's drawn by Hisahi, this guy makes some glorious hentai, I definitely recommend anyone to read his stuf. They announced this book some months ago and it looked really good, it sure took its sweet time to be published. Now I just hope they release Toroke Manako soon after this one. Anyone hyped?

  8. Everyone with finite time has to choose their VNs somehow. Directly or indirectly, you're being influenced by others' opinions unless all you do is browse VNs you've never heard of on a site that carries a large variety of VNs with no bias to any in particular. Without the subjective opinion of others, it's quite difficult to distinguish misleading marketing of an unappealing title from a title that will genuinely interest you, especially if your experience with VNs is limited. Metascores simplify the process of gauging the reaction of others. They simplify the process of ranking VNs of a given type. With 10,000+ VNs to choose from, a score ranking is a pretty good place to start looking for titles that might interest you. Looking at a new brand you've never tried, a score ranking gives you an idea which title would be the best one to start with. While a review or demo might be the tool you use to make a final decision, scores are a quick way to take a list of 10,000 and whittle it down to a few dozen that might be worth your time to investigate further.

  11. I’m going to respond to Maef’s post here: http://forums.fuwanovel.net/index.php?/topic/8694-important-domain-and-host-transfer/?p=240053. I realize the topic has moved in other directions, but a promise is a promise! Hi maef. As I’ve told you before, I think you do a great job cutting to the heart of the issues, and while I think I’ve answered all of these questions here and there in several different posts, it’s worth the time and effort to collect them all here for your consideration. I look forward to your feedback/input. Here are the questions I’m hearing from you. Let me know if I missed any: What is the objective of Fuwanovel? If it’s still “Make VNs popular in the West”, what’s the new gameplan for doing so? In my (Tay’s) mind, how did dropping torrents affect the site and its goals? What new features are being planned to compensate for loss of torrents? How do you plan on getting new players? What is the objective of Fuwanovel? If it’s still “Make VNs popular in the West”, what’s the new gameplan for doing so? If we’re talking about site stationary, then yes, we’re absolutely keeping “Make Visual Novels Popular in the West” as our tagline : P. If we’re talking about site strategy, let me break it down into short and intermediate-term goals (I’ll leave the long-term goals for another post). Short term goals (6-8 months): A) Keep Fuwa relevant, B ) keep building the house, C) Foster/rebuild relationships, D) (possible) VNTLS replacement A) Keep Fuwa relevant: by building new features and increasing blog draw; optimizing searchability by a complete SEO overhaul; building a resource stream to commission special articles and projects; B ) Keep building the house: get the redesigns up (for all 3 sites); enhance Fuwa Academy content beyond lessons and lexicon; build the PC database to >250 games and get a good start on the mobile database; start getting patching guides up; we have 12 VN reviewers on the hub but I wont be happy until I get the last 2 “big” fish on my list; and finish my Fate/HA walkthrough : P C) Relationships: I’ve started forming partnerships with devs for the reviews team, but there are many more I’ll be approaching soon; outreach to TL teams whose patches were on front site + discussion about ways to help; prep resources for TL teams who want private boards on forums for their projects; outreach and joint projects with other VN communities (in discussions atm); evangelizing anime/FB groups and equal-exchange with bigger anime/manga/LN communities; D) I’m talking with folks like [need to get permission before adding name] about ways we can set up a VNTLS replacement Intermediate-Term Goals: E) Fan TL Academy; F) Fan Creation Academy; G) Special Japanese VN news program (Planning on these 3 projects is pretty far along, but as I haven’t had a chance to even bring them up in the LC, yet, I’ll leave it there for the moment) In my (Tay’s) mind, how did dropping torrents affect the site and its goals? I agree with you, Maef, that dropping torrents was a big deal and a threat to our appeal. I think the most important way that it affected the site and its goals from my perspective, is that it forced me to look at the profile of the average user who was going to stick around even after the torrents went offline, and figure out what keeps them coming back. I came to two conclusions: users who “stay” do so for at least one of two reasons: 1) community, or 2) ease of use. If you’re reading this post, you probably get #1 already, so let’s talk #2: People like Fuwa for how easy it is to access information and resources – and that went/goes for more than just torrents. If you take our walkthroughs as an example: they’re far-and-away the most popular English VN walkthroughs on the net. According to Google (I’ve been spending a lot of time with their keywords tools), our walkthroughs are used more and rank higher than GameFAQs for the vast majority of the “popular” VNs, and almost 100% of the less-popular VNs for which we have a walkthrough. Zaka’s TL updates are the same way. The Ongoing Projects board has been quite popular, too, as it allows people to easily find and track a project. The list goes on. If Fuwa can build products which hit on each facet of the hobby and make it as easy as possible to use, we’ll have staying power and we’ll have growing power. There were tons of other mental changes, too, like the benefits of stability. For me, personally, there was a huge mental shift when I realized that there is no longer the threat of unannounced, sudden destruction: I/we now have control of our staying power: owning our own domain and hosting means that as long as the bills get paid, we’ll be here in 12 months time, or in 2 years, or 3 years, etc. What new features are being planned to compensate for loss of torrents? Reviews hub, possible further takeover of VNTLS role, expanded and commissioned blog content, guest blogging program, possible auto-patchers for VNs (user gets the game, gets the patch from the TL team, downloads our autopatcher, and avoids a headache of installation) (this is just on the drawing board, though, so temper expectations), Fuwa Academy lessons + mentor program + lexicon for new players, mobile VN database, partnerships with big TL companies and big/small OELVN devs for review copies of games for FuwaReviews team, a smokin’-hot new front site design, expanding PC database to >250 of most popular VNs, patching guides for the most popular VNs, VN buying guide written by a new friend who wrote the reddit buying guide. Further down the road: Fan TL Academy; Fan Creation Academy; Special Japanese VN news program; expanded interactive fiction section How do you plan on getting new players? Fuwa Academy lessons and resources; complete overhaul of our site SEO to improve visibility; evangelizing and partnerships with anime groups (where the anime group’s corresponding VN has its own page with lots of info); providing lolis for clephas to sacrifice to the Old Gods; intermediate players via possible VNTLS replacement; Steam curation programs (includes promoting, for example, Meru’s list); I have a handful of other ideas but I think I left that notebook at school and I'm tired The last thing I'll say is that the reviews hub is a good illustration of how I personally function. I think Fuwanovel can be a hub of all the facets of the VN hobby, and that we'll be relevant because we are going to write/commission authoritative guides/articles, host our own stuff, and link and promote external groups/sites generously. I want to get to the point where Fuwa is so easy to use, that people want to use it to navigate the VN landscape just because we make it so easy. My brain got pretty tired writing that up, so I’m sure I missed some stuff. Let me know if an answer isn’t clear or not sufficiently comprehensive for you. I really appreciate your Qs and input, Maef. I see Fuwa as a hobby -- I give the site a lot of time, but that's because I have fun working on stuff with friends here. Yes -- I have a vision and roadmap of where I think Fuwa can go, but underneath all of those ideas is a foundation of fun and cooperation. I want to enjoy myself when I come to Fuwa, and I want everybody else to, too. We need to pace ourselves and make sure we're all having fun, and the improvements will come along.

  13. If she left you for someone else, then she isn't really worth your time. Your scenario reminds me of one of my own experiences. I was dating dating a girl for more then a year, When I left to the live at the university in the city, we tried to continue the relationship. I had warned her that I was going to start to put my school work first, and she said that she understood. Every time I would skype with her, she would seem very sad and depressed. It got so bad that one time I almost sent an email to one of her teachers telling her that I was getting worried about her. And then that December day happened. That day, I had came back to my dorm room in tears because my English 200 teacher failed me in front of the entire class, seconds after I told him that I had been suffering through depression. On my way back to my dorm, I received a text message from my ex. She said "we need to talk". Since she was probably in class at the time, I decided to text her back later. After I had calmed myself down, I went on twitter to see what was going on. That's when I saw her tweet. It said " Today's the day I'm going to be free". That's when I started to put two and two together. After spending about thirty minuets in denial, I calmed myself for the second time that day, I began to process my next coarse of action. After waiting for a few hours, I textted her back asking her what she wanted to talk about. My heart was pounding. After twenty minuets of waiting, I finally got a response from her. She told me that she was eating and that she would text me back as soon as she was done. After waiting for over an hour, I got another reply from her. She told me that she was going to take a shower. Ninety minuets later, I was still panicking and I finally got a response back. She asked me if I had had my finals yet. I told her no and asked her again what she wanted to talk about. She told me that she would tell me after I took my finals. That's when I asked her directly if she was going to break up with me. She then said " I didn't say anything about breaking up with you". I couldn't take it any more. I was absolutely sure that she was going to break up with me. Instincts took over my reasoning as I dialed her phone. She didn't pick up, so I left a voice mail saying how I would miss her and all of the things that you would say in a situation like this. Almost immediately after hanging up, I got a text from her. "Do you want me to do it over text, skype or on the phone." The rest of the conversation was muddy and personal. There are things that I cannot recall as well as things that are too personal to say. In the end, I cried for 48 minuets as I waited for my parents to pick me up. After a bunch of other things happening, I ended up leaving the university and going to a community college, which I am proud to say, is almost like my second home. I made new friends, and even became an officer of a club. That summer, my cousin talked me into texting my ex and asking her why she broke up with me for closure. She told me that around the time of the breakup, she started having a crush on another guy, so she dumped me and told the other guy how she felt. The other guy rejected her and after that, her life took a spiral turn down. There were other things that happened to her after that December day, but I honestly don't feel like it is my place to mention them. In the end, she texted me, "I actually regret breaking up with you," . Personally, I found it ironic because, for me, after she broke up with me, my life got better and better. In the end. life isn't about the events that you go through, it's about how you get through them. I'm not saying that all change is good, but I'm also not saying that all change is bad. Good luck out there!

  14. "It’s true that fan-patches for visual novels means that fans might get to play the game in English, but we're now in the age where official licenses are much more common, and quite more likely." Ugh no, still rare as hell. That said, if translation teams and MG can work peacefully together, then I see no harm trying.

Best School: Crimson Squad, best story and characters Best Character: Hikage Weakest Character: Kind of a tie between Imu and Murakumo; the former's great as comic relief (especially if it involves HIkage) but nothing interesting is done with her as a character until the near end of the Hebijo story while the latter has potential to be interesting like the backstory with Yomi and the manga writing but very little is done with either. Hopefully Estival Versus can fix this.

  23. When I was younger, I was a huge proponent of the 'literal' translation. However, as time has passed and my comprehension level has deepened, I've come to realize there are just too many irreconcilable differences between Japanese and English for a completely literal translation to work. Of course, with things that do translate directly with no particularly 'off' nuances (and there are plenty of instances of this, in any language) there is no problem with a direct translation, and at the same time, it is a crime not to translate them properly in those cases. However, the thing you have to grasp is that there are two goals to a translation effort... the actual translation and making it smooth and comprehensible. Of course, where a translation group focuses is their choice. Some will go the 'purist' route, and yet others will go the other way... Americanizing it to the point of ridiculousness (Grisaia's translation tends a bit toward the latter, from what I read of it, whereas FSN is closer to the former). However, it isn't really possible to be one or the other only. A completely Americanized VN is no longer the VN whose name it is borrowing, and a complete direct translation will be incomprehensible, difficult to read, and generally frustrating for anyone born outside of Japan itself. Understand, with my favorite anime and games, I would sometimes spend hours a day for weeks on end considering one or two really complex lines, just to see if there was a better way to get the manner of expression correct than that was done by the original translation crew. In some cases I succeeded (the Kara no Kyoukai movies) and in others I didn't manage to rework it fully to my satisfaction (Cardcaptor Sakura). However, regardless, it is important to grasp that translation, if you take it seriously, can be an extremely complex task. Of course, my viewpoint is that of a translation-checker/editor, as much as a raw translator (people who have good skills in both languages tend to be drafted into that kind of role *smiles dryly*), so it is perhaps one that is a bit out of sync with the average translator. Edit: Understand, I've never encountered a translation group that really does 'literal-translate' things that lasted... this is because no one downloads their releases after the first time. When I first began translating, I didn't seriously consider my audience, I was just being OCD... but as I got older, I mellowed and realized that there is no point in a translation that doesn't both capture the meaning and get it across properly to the reader/watcher/player.

  24. there are some opinions about the japaneses seeing the anime's characters like japaneses, and not like whites (for more information, see the link below). So, the characters that we see as "white" are japaneses (so, asians), except for the foreigners (Saber, blonde, blue eyes= white) Why do the japanses draw themselves as white? And for some reason, I just can't think in other couple besides Hisao and Lilly from Katawa Shoujo, I liked them

  26. Shakugan no Shana's first 2 seasons are pretty decent, the 3rd one is really iffy, though and is a huge rocky ride, most of it felt stupid but the ending kinda makes up for the whole journey. It still felt stupid, but at least you get a decent conclusion. I recommend you try out Zero no Tsukaima over Shakugan no Shana, it's similar to Shakugan no Shana in terms of the interactions with the characters, main heroines are both tsunderes as well (Kugimiya Rie voices both the main heroines too), but in Zero no Tsukaima you have a much less rocky ride, the show is a lot more consistent in what it wants to do and the main couple is much cuter, although it also has less seriousness in comparison and although the action is still there and you'll get several magical battles, it's not the biggest focus of the show. I also second Hunter x Hunter 2011, you can't go wrong with that show. Other than that, try the Higurashi series. It's pretty good, an actually decent horror anime adaptation, but there's not much action in it, just supernatural.

  27. You can say that I experienced something similar last summer, except I was pretty much in pain when I thought, for a time, I was with my "special someone" just to be shut out when I tried talking to her, and it kept getting worse as the relationship went on. I was in pain for a few weeks as it was hard trying to move on... But I can understand the feeling of not being cared for as the environment does feel different when you're alone. Knowing that you had more trouble to move on than she did makes it obvious that you're more "human" than she is, and that's normally a trait people look for in a person. And I agree with Zodai, after an end to a relationship, focusing on a passion or doing something you always wanted to do but never had the time for can put you back up on your feet rather faster than if you weren't doing anything~ Hope all turns out better sooner rather than later~

  29. It helps if you understand that all translated VN ratings are inflated upwards, non-rape nukige are generally inflated slightly downwards, moege are always inflated upwards (to varying degrees, depending on a number of factors), chuunige are generally deflated downwards slightly, and story-focused VNs are all over the place (it isn't uncommon for the votes to be concentrated at the top and the bottom with story-heavy VNs)

  33. Scores are there for people who can't be arsed to read actual impressions on the game, and to be frank who cares about them Numbering systems are stupid, and inaccurate. Your prejudices and preferences weight these things (which is why top animes are all shounen crap , which may apply to VNs also) your experience weight these things, your philosophy on review scale affects your score, scores are relative so what you're comparing it to also affects stuff. Basically the accurate stuff is in the text and scores just give a quick impression, and not a very accurate one either. It's not worth stressing out over.

  34. Kinda shocked there's still not this masterpiece : Title: Brandish by Venom and Rusty Soul Genre: Monster Girl, Tentacles, Group, Rape, Futanari, Yuri, Pettanko, Oppai, Shotacon, .... Actually, it would be easier to name what it not there : Scat, Gore and Snuff Summary: Follow the sexy story of the well endowed Succubus Twiska and the legendary shota-hero Theo (and his companions). Details: Complete, 5~6 Volumes IIRC, and 2 OVAs Why You Recommend It: Well drawn panels, with a lot of differents situations there's actually a plot (with a little of effort, but don't expect it to be a litterature award candidate). Like said earlier in the Genre section, there is almost everything in this very complete manga and will certainly please to everyone, plus, who doesn't like succubus ? Opinions: 9/10, still one of my favorites.

  40. Ashleigh Ball as Revy. Doesn't hurt she also voices Rainbow Dash and Applejack.

  41. 1st place: Kana Ueda - has such a sultry voice imo, and has a huge range of moods. Does not seem to suffer from monotone acting. Plus, Tohsaka Rin. <3 2nd place: Whoever voiced Sakura Yoshino in Da Capo 2 (VN) - in the more serious scenes (not spoiling), some of her voice acting brought me close to tears, emotionally. (or an outright flood, depending on the scene).
