Warning: wall of words Confession 2: Writing all that was painful, and not just because it was super embarrassing. Confession 3: I overheard a guy in my class saying she isn't pretty once... The only explanation I can think of is that he was either lying, blind, or gay. Confession 4: Despite being happy-go-lucky and a bit of an airhead (if you've seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, she's basically Clem) she could get pissed. When one of my classmates really got on her nerves she hit him with a freaking chair, and it wasn't one of those pussy chairs made of plastic, it was wood and metal. This was a really tough thing for me to witness because I really like the original Pupa manga. It's not a masterpiece by any means, but it had some decent dark and psychological themes and an interesting pair of siblings as main characters. It's a horror story about some of the more grotesque things you could write about, a story about a sister who's forced to literally eat her brother in order to survive and they cope with it as well as the mad experiments going on in the background. But this anime... this anime managed to suck every ounce of life out of Pupa. This is not just a "bad" adaptation, it wasn't just your typical "oh it left out some important bits" or "the pacing was kind of bad", this adaptation, can not even be considered an adaptation of the original Pupa manga. This anime right here is an insult to all adaptations in existence. I was really excited when this was first annouced, but that excitement didn't last long as it dawned on me that the anime would have an episode length of 3 minutes. At this point is where essentially all of my red flags went off and the prospect of Pupa having a successful adaptation was basically already ruined. I tried to think of any possible way they could successfully pull it off, but I just couldn't think of any. And sure enough, as soon as the first episode of Pupa aired, I knew that I was in for one of the worst rides of my life. Anime isn't famous for having good horror shows. The amount of really good horror anime in existence can likely be counted by the amount of fingers one has, and Pupa already started off with the wrong foot by censoring the living hell out of every single meaningful shot. I'm not one to advocate that gore and violence is what makes horror, it's definitely not, but in the case of Pupa, the core of the story lies in the grotesque and brutal violence of a lot of scenes, and by censoring all of them with huge black bars, you're already taking away any "wow" factor the show might have had. And if you're wondering how ridiculous the censoring got at points, just look at this: A man holding a knife!? That's heinous! Censor this madness right now! But don't worry, I re-watched the series in blu-ray just for the sake of getting the most out of it, and even then, it still utterly fails to transmit all the grotesque scenes and all the violence the original manga had. All the entrails are sloppily drawn, nothing feels vivid or impactful, the "gore" consists mostly of ludicrous amounts of blood gushing out of people for no apparent reason. So even in the gore department, this series fails. The one thing they could have at least gotten right, they utterly fail at, and after a horrid 2 first episodes, watching the rest of Pupa was like dragging my dead body across a floor made out of sand paper. Let's quickly go over how the show adapted the story: Yume and Utsutsu go home together one day and Yume is turned into a monster and it's revealed she has been infected with the Pupa virus. This virus grants the host with regenerative abilities, but in return, they cause insatiable hunger. Yume kills her brother by stabbing him but in a sudden twist he comes back and we discover he also has been infected by the virus and can regenerate himself. Though for some reason he doesn't have the hunger thing. Our Onii-chan vows to protect Yume by letting her eat him whenever she's hungry and the anime turns these scenes into laughable moments by having random cheerful music play in the background as Yume eats away Utsutsu's body. This does nothing good for the show and just removes any and all kind of meaningful impact the scenes might have otherwise have. We have some flashbacks to the siblings' past where it's revealed Yume's mother had the virus inside her and that's supposedly how Yume got it. We see Yume as a child eating a bird and being stabbed by her own mother, only to then be revived by the virus, this in turn caused her mother to lose most of her sanity. We also learn that the siblings had a rough past with a really abusive dad, but the show really fails at portraying what is one of the most important plot points of the manga, and that is Utsutsu's dad and his tendency to be violent towards him. Not to mention his role in the story development itself. But I wouldn't expect anything less from such a crappy show. Our siblings get taken away by some random organization we never heard of (10/10 context!) and Utsutsu gets experimented on for some reason. Yume manages to break free using her monster powers and Utsutsu escapes with her, leaving behind a trail of dead bodies. After this, the anime pretty much ends with Yume once again eating away at her brother and the credits rolling. Sounded fun right? No? Hmm, I wonder what might have been missing... Oh wait, every fucking thing was missing. This show provides absolutely zero context for why most of the events are happening. One of the main villains, a scientist called Maria is introduced early on as some sort of mastermind behind things, and at one point they even mention she's going to impregnate herself using Utsutsu's sperm and Yume's egg cells in an attempt to give birth to another monster, and we even see her with a pregnant belly! But what happens after that? NOTHING. Absolutely fucking nothing. We never see or hear from this lady again, we're just supposed to accept she disappears I guess. But if you're going to make her disappear, why introduce her in the first place?? But that's not all, Utsutsu's father, who even appears on the very first manga chapter, is rarely shown in the anime, and he has a very present role as he's the motivation behind a lot of Utsutsu's reasoning and he's also the one who gave him all his scars, but the anime doesn't even bother to explain anything related to it. In the episode where we learn about Yume's backstory, her mother seems to be an important character and we even see her in the present day talking to their father. And then they never appear again! Ever! Why are you showing your viewers things that won't matter later on? Lastly, when Utsutsu and Yume get kidnapped, not only do they make everything look ridiculously stupid by having Yume and Utsutsu, two people who have regenerative abilities, lose in a fight against one single guy with a pocket knife. I mean, who looked at this show and thought "let's make a series about two siblings with a weird virus in them and then never utilize the virus in any of the scenes where it could have been useful". We also never know who the organization that kidnapped them is or why they're doing what they're doing, we're just shown, and very briefly so, some of the torture they're performing on Utsutsu, but most of the actual gorey scenes are never actually shown. It's like they decided to make a horror and then strip it of any scenes that might make a horror show good in the first place. Couplethis with terrible and incosistent writing and you got yourself a big pile of crap. Or in Pupa's case, a small pile of crap, because this anime only lasts for a whole 30 minutes if you combine all the episodes, so at least it's not like your eyes will be subject to the atrocities this show has for long. And after all the completely random nonsensical events I just described above, this anime has the audacity to have one extra episode at the end with absolutely no connection to the previous episodes whatsoever. This last episode is just a cheerful scene with Yume and Utsutsu going shopping for a new teddy bear for Yume. What's the point of it? Give me consolation after all the shit I've had to deal with when watching the show? Because if that was the intention, I'm sorry to say it only prolongued the suffering. It's like the final nail in the coffin before this series is buried for eternity to never be seen again. And let's not forget the god awful product placement, because don't think I didn't see that, then again it was hard to miss given how out of place it looks compared to the rest of the shot: Yeah, letting a child read Pupa, a manga full of gore and violence. 10/10 product placement To wrap this up and so people stop asking me to watch this show, Pupa is a complete and utter mess with no sense of direction, no writing consistency, bad dialogue, bad art direction, bad gore, bad story, bad everything. This show does not have a sole redeeming factor, not even for the lovers of pure gore, I do not think it is physically possible for someone to watch Pupa and think "huh, that was cool". You would have to stretch it, and I mean really stretch it, just to call Pupa "average". The other shows I've ranted about before this don't even come close to the level of garbage that is Pupa. Do not watch this. I repeat, do not watch this, you will lose brain cells at a 10 times faster ratio in the 30 minutes you'll spend watching this show. Please, I'm caring for your health here, do not dare to touch this show with a 10 ft pole. If you're curious about Pupa in the slightest, at least do yourself a huge favor and read the manga, because at least that's tolerable and knows what it's doing, but for the love of everything, do not lay eyes upon this monstrosity of an "anime". Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to spray lemon juice in my eyes and pretend Pupa, just like the Tsukihime anime, never existed.

Aaeru's Fuwanovel was intricately entwined with anti-copyright advocacy. It shaped the site, its community, and how Fuwanovel was viewed by the visual novel community at large. The linked thread was one of many skirmishes between Aaeru and her supporters against what they saw as external aggression--the demand for respect of intellectual property. I think this thread was notable in that it's the first time (I'm aware of) that such arguments succeeded in achieving a level of respect and recognition within Aaeru's own community, or that a person publicly argued toe-to-toe with Aaeru on her own level without simply dismissing or demonizing her. I noticed that Aaeru's stance against copyright subtly softened over the course of our arguments, showing that Aaeru wasn't as rigid and unthinking as many of her opponents made her out to be--it was just that no one bothered to actually challenge her views in an effective manner that she could relate to.

apart from having misstranslations, i consider a translation beeing bad, when it sounds hollow whilst reading - means no strong words beeing used, no emotions beeing triggered, etc. its the same like in movies when the voice actor absolutely doesnt fit the character., it ruins the whole experience. & i know that not every word in japanese has its english equivalent, so you have to think your own way around, same goes of course when it has one, but its impact is way less in english, so you have to find something else for not killing the atmosphere. i have nothing against making (very) minor changes, compared to the actual meaning, when its neccessary (nothing plotrelevant though) to improve the atmosphere or the reading experience in general

No, it doesn't work that way. I tried doing just TLC at the beginning of common route (and that was the least screwed up part of the entire VN). The outcome: mixed up writing styles, minor errors that were overlooked, grammar that wasn't entirely fixed - all that added up to a crappy end result, despite my efforts to fix bigger issues with the TL. I went back to them later on and re-translated them from scratch just like everything else in the end. TLC is applicable only when the translators know what they are doing, only lack some experience and occasionally mistranslate an idiom or something. TLC-ers are only supposed to check the TL and fix just a few mistakes. When they have to fix everything, it doesn't qualify as "TLC" anymore. So no, the only thing you can do with bad translations, is throwing them out of the window and re-doing everything from scratch. It's not a chance to get a translation, but a bad translation. A crude, borderline-unreadable fanfic. And, like I stated earlier, it can't be fixed - it needs a re-translation, and that just won't happen. Nobody will touch it, because it would require just as much effort as working on something that wasn't translated at all. When a VN doesn't have a TL, there is always a chance that a competent group could pick it up. When a VN has a bad TL, it has no realistic chances of getting a proper TL. That's all well and good for people who can read it in Japanese anyway, but everyone else can most definitely forget about a real translation. And people who won't swallow mistranslated BS, obviously won't even touch MTs (unlike a part of audience that accepts bad translations). But, are they actually helping out? Because they do plenty of harm - not only they ruin the VN, but also reduce the chances of it ever getting a proper TL to zero. Imagine such situation: Somebody is sick. Very Nice Person with absolutely no medical knowledge gives him some random drugs. Those actually worsen patient's condition and end up killing him. Was the Very Nice Person helpful? He really tried, but his incompetence caused far more harm than good... What would you do? Tell that Very Nice Person that he is doing great job and watch the patient die? Encourage him to continue and start digging a grave in the mean time? Or, as you suggested - desperately try to treat the harmful side-effects of the drugs he is administering, so that the patient won't die, but "merely" end up as a paralyzed vegetable? No. The first and most obvious response that you mentioned, is the only response that actually makes sense. First - stop him from causing damage. This won't guarantee that the patient survives, but hey, at least he will have a chance. Second - tell that Very Nice Person, that if he really wants to help, he should study medicine. Or do something that doesn't require specialist skills. Translations work just like that. If somebody doesn't have the skills necessary to translate, their attempts will cause nothing but harm. Stopping them is the only option. If they really want to help, they should either put some more effort into studying, or try to do something else - editing, proofreading, hacking, whatever. Misplaced effort can cause harm, and half-assed translations kill VNs. I hate localizations in general and Americanizations in particular. But in the end, the whole point of translating, is making things understandable for the Western reader. When said reader has to look a lot of things up, it will distract him form the story. I like the translations to be as faithful as possible and all, but there is a certain limit. Leaving references to an anime that's completely unknown on the West wouldn't make much sense, and some things are just impossible to translate to begin with. Also, not everything can be simply looked up on non-Japanese sites (like some weird 2ch slang for example). Personally, I like to mention everything that ended up rewritten in TL-notes. That way, various obscure cultural references won't be getting in the way while reading, but people who care can still fine them.

I feel like Ferdinand the Hair Stylist is trying to imply something here, impart an important message, but for the life of me I can't figure out what it could be...

the problem with translating into english is, that its considered a global language. so you´ve to make the desicion from the get go to either make it more appealing to a wider audience, which means lesser use of slang, uniqueness & stuff - means english light, or doing it stricly for those who´re native english speakers - means going full out, with a heavy use of prose, slang & whatoever comes to mind. for those who want the best translation possible, only the 2nd way works, but from an economical point of view the 1rst one is the better, cause non native english speakers wont feel arkward whilst reading & therefore rather buy the full version. In the end its up to the company/fanlators to decide, if they want the best possible product done, or the one which ensures greater mainstream compatibilty on cost of quality.

Dark psychological shows can wait, idols are more important than that pseudo BS.

Shinsekai Yori, unless you have shit taste

For my own 2 cp, Is when the tramslation makes things up, or leaves out obvious lines of dialouge. That really grinds my gears. Often, it's not that it's difficult to translate - but rather, uses more formal and expressive english - which many people seem to run screaming from. So instead it gets cut in half and "dumbed down"(not actually, but for all intents and purposes). Of coruse, sometimes it's the oppasite and a character is using cutesy-stupid talk, but the TL decided it was just that, stupid - and TL's it into "proper english". Thus losing a whole aspect of a characters tone~ The other thing, is when they try to transform a very japanese-specific reference into something "american" (or european, whatever, you know what I mean). A TL should stick to the culture the VN is centered around, not transform it becuase some people won't "get it". Clannad comes to mind as an example - alot of people cried and wailed at something that was translated perfectly, but didn't make much sense to most readers, due to lack of cultural immersion. I took that reference and googled it, becuase I was one of the ones that had no idea what it meant, and waddya know - learning is power! Just my personal experiences and thoughts, anyway~

Hi guys, I've recently run into an error while trying to run a visual novel on Win8 64bit, specifically: "authentication failed unrecognized kernel32 module. / nm" After a bit of digging, I've solved the issue - and I thought I'd share the solution, in case someone has the same problem. All you need to do is download the zip from the following website and extract the dll file into the folder with your visual novel executable. Worked like a charm for me. I had this problem with the visual novel 失われた未来を求めて (Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete), though from what I've read, this can happen with My Girlfriend is the President as well, at the very least. Since there can be more cases like this, I thought I'd leave a topic here. Hope it helps!

So, fun little idea I had. I'm going to let you guys decide what anime I watch for a while. Essentially I'll put forth some anime selections and you vote on what I watch. Options I put forth are things I've been told to watch or have been on my list way too long. I'll either rant or rave, so that will be fun for everyone right? This first selections a fun one: On one hand we have Love Live, the Fuwa favorite I need to watch so that I can understand what on earth everyone's going on about. On the other hand we have Shinsekai Yori, the dark masterpiece I missed in the anime club due to my busy schedule. So, what's it gonna be?

Slowly pushing through the KonoSora common route. There are some likeable moments, but I'm not so sure this was the best idea. Motivation to read dying... Yeah, I also think it's a great shame that Noah is a console only release, it's the definitive version of the story, and the original is quite lacking in comparison. But 5pb. is going to 5pb., they love their console exclusives, and for some reason they love exclusives on consoles who no one owns even more. :/ Thought I'd write up those summaries at least, though it obviously doesn't compare to reading the real thing.

Unethical for me would be if they're taking advantage of their costumers without them knowing it. But Kickstarter is, quite frankly, one of the more honest ways to go about this. They're literally exposing everything they're doing to you and what you're getting for when you pay them and you only pay and support them if you'd like. They're not taking advantage of you, they're trying to involve you in the process of licensing a game and you only chose to support it if you want to. Unlike Jast or MG who only license the titles they feel they should license, SP actually asks their audience what they want licensed by launching a kickstarter and letting the fans decide. They're not shoving this down your throat, and like I mentioned earlier most of their kickstarters aren't even theirs to begin with, they're just indie devs who happened to partner with SP for extra advertisement, SP will likely not profit much off of it. Just because SP puts those kickstarters on their websites doesn't mean SP is the one in charge of those projects, they're just helping them get exposure. I really fail to see how unethical this is when SP is one of the companies that's most directly involved with fans, where the fans decide who to support and where to put their money in. You're saying they shouldn't keep doing it because they should establish themselves as a business by now instead of relying on fans throwing money at them, but I think they already have, they're pretty much an advertisement agency, and all the kickstarters or their page are primarly done by indie developers who are doing their own thing, so SP is just listing a bunch of Kickstarters at once, what's so inherently wrong with that?? This whole "dishonest" and "unethical" talk gives me a headache.

This show had SUCH a great potential, it was completely wasted, wasted away. Amazing artstyle and unlimited budget works didnt gave us a great anime. And Risa is probably the WORST, WORST protagonist ever made for an anime (yes, the anime is clearely centered around Risa and her encountering with the cool terrorists, because terrorists are cool lol )

One of the duties of an established publisher is assuming financial risk and responsibility for projects under their umbrella. In compensation for assuming this risk, they're entitled to a large share of the profit. In Sekai Project's case, they're double-dipping: they're profiting from successful projects, while shifting the risk to the end-users. I consider that irresponsible from a publishing perspective. Developers are free to beg for money to make games. That's what Kickstarter was designed to enable. But publishers, especially established publishers, who do the same are just taking advantage of consumers. Now that they've had their success, it's about time Sekai Project started taking responsibility for their projects and stopped foisting these responsibilities on the consumer.

I'm not a big fan of crowdfunding for-profit projects. I find it exploitative. If I'm investing in a for-profit enterprise, I expect a return on my investment--i.e., if I contribute 1% of the funds to create a game, then I have a 1% stake in that game, and I expect a cut of the profits that result from the game's sale. Now, it would be different if crowdfunding was used to develop a game and the game was then freely distributed afterwards. But that's not what's happening. I'll grudgingly support a new developer that needs the funding to get their first project off the ground. But after that? They better start funding themselves using the profits they withheld from investors. I'm extremely skeptical of traditional crowdfunding campaigns, and I would only support them for a product that I really want, or for an innovative cause that I think is worthy of donating to (to date, these requirements have not been met). And more than likely, I would contribute at the minimum level to obtain the primary game assets. Sekai Project's continued reliance on crowdfunding is just one more reason I continue to regard them and their business practices with suspicion. As for a glorified preorder campaign, I'm not necessarily opposed to that concept, though I'd be extremely wary if they said they would charge me in advance for a product that is still in the planning stages with no projected release date. I'm not opposed to preorder campaigns to gauge customer interest (similar to Steam Greenlight). I'm opposed to assuming financial risk for the profit of others--i.e., being exploited.

It made sense at the beginning since they were just starting out and didn't have the funds to translate big projects. Now that they are finally starting to release things that were kickstarted they should start getting enough money to fund their own projects. Okay, I think we are mixing up different standards here. All this talk about style, prose and whatnot, is only relevant to "great translations". Absolutely the best ones out there. I think only the most delusional JP-readers would seriously expect such level from an average Fan-TL. That kind of quality would be nice of course, but it isn't really all that vital. People who seriously care about writing style, or those who simply prefer to experience everything the way it was written originally (like I do), will read most stuff in JP anyway. When you can read in JP, there's just no point in touching translations (other that saving time if your reading pace in ENG is noticeably faster). Now, most current Fan-TL are what I'd call a "good enough translations". They accurately represent the original story and are written in readable English. Nothing more. They don't represent the original prose or writing style, just plot, characters, setting, etc.. And that's all the Fan-TL really needs to do. Of course, the more it does, the better, but that's the acceptable minimum. This really should work just fine for almost anyone who isn't dedicated enough to learn Japanese. If a TL fails to deliver that (due to overly literal writing or some minor inaccuracies), but it doesn't fail horribly, it's what I'd call a "sub-par translation" (Rewrite is a good example here). It doesn't represent the original very accurately, but it's still perfectly readable, and all important details are preserved. Those can be a little annoying sometimes (as Clephas mentioned), but they still work. People who aren't familiar with the original, probably won't notice any errors. Then, there are "bad translations". The main problem with those isn't prose, writing and all that fancy stuff you guys are talking about (though those usually suck, too). The biggest issue here, is that they don't represent the original at all, because they are filled with mistranslations. They alter characters' personalities, completely ruin the atmosphere, or even mix up the events and plot-points. In short, they utterly butcher the original story. Good editor could make them readable (you could probably even reforge a machine translation like this), but they still would be far too inaccurate to actually work. But, I don't think a good editor would touch obvious crap to begin with, so all you get is utterly unreadable garbage in the end. Nobody sane really demands great translations, and nobody sane really complains about good enough ones. Some 4chan trolls, maybe. And you can only really discuss prose and other literary aspects on the "great" vs "good enough" translations level. Bad translations - those that do get bashed (and quite rightly so) - are on a completely different level. The prose, writing and stuff aren't the biggest issues here (those can always be fixed by editors). The main problem is that the TL is completely wrong and butchers the original. Like in Eustia or Monobeno cases. Now, when clearly incompetent people are attempting to rewrite a VN somebody likes into a borderline-unreadable fanfic, it's only natural that some fans get pissed and start pointing out errors. Often in a not-so-civilized manner. JP-readers will always have slightly different experiences than ENG-readers. But in case of "good enough" and even "sub-par" translations, those differences shouldn't be significant. "Bad" translations however, turn VNs into something completely different than their original versions, and are well capable of degrading a nice, enjoyable title (like KonoSora) into something worse than Shuffle or Katawa Shoujo.
