If you want to read Japanese then you have to study Japanese to some extent. Like you mentioned, using a machine translator is no fun, so yeah... studying is basically the only way. However, you don't need to learn the language to a fluent level in order to simply read a visual novel. Reading is simply for your own entertainment, and not for someone else's benifit, so that means you have the ability to start reading at any proficency level. (You are not translating this for anyone; you are simply reading a piece of literature because you want to. This means you decide when you start reading, as it won't have a negative effect on anyone, except perhaps yourself.) Of course it is not easy reading a book in a language you hardly know, so like you said there will be tons of times you simply don't know for sure what you read. But, using Japanese VNs and a program like Chiitrans you can slowly but surely start to learn from reading. (Check out this thread for a guide on how to set up Chiitrans.) If you want to read Japanese VNs, you should first master the kana, then move over to studying grammar like a lunatic. Kanji knowledge is not that important if all you will use the language for is reading at a basic level. Through the use of dictionary lookups and furigana combined with a big vocabulary, you can kind of skip the kanji most of the time. (In your case, Chinese knowledge will also help, as certain kanji retain their reading/meanings from Chinese.) Basically, start studying and read as you do. That way you will slowly but surely start learning, and reading will become easier. If you are currently at the point where simply reading a word like あなた is taking a long time, you have a while to go. But, that still doesn't mean you can't get there.3 points

Trolls try to trigger epileptic seizures - is it assault?
finiteHP and 2 others reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
Oho, 100% legally assault if you can prove intent ... would be my assessment. If the image was just for lulz though, no. But stupidity on the internet is causing us to rapidly move toward a future where there will be a concerted effort to curtail the freedoms and the consequence-free nature of the internet. Didn't have that in the 90s when people were more sensible, now every idiot can get on xD3 points -
Before I start reading, I will change myself in a true Nihonjin. 1. I put on my yukata 2. I swing 10 times with my katana, which is made from true superior true nippon steel. 3. I hug my waifu(dakimakura) and make out with her. 4. I start up the VN 5. at this point I'm a full native and can easily read any VN.2 points

As a Law student, and with the facts you've mentioned above, the "troll" in question is liable for more than just assault. If a smart lawyer handles the plaintiff's case, he could also be charged with psychological harm, which is a touchy area of the law. But minus the surety of his liability, this action, along many others soon to come, may force the internet to have to adhere to a central authority in the near future. Even though the internet isn't as free as we think (there are eyes everywhere), those watcher thrive in the shadow. Continued acts of open violence would grant governments (i'm assuming through the U.N) to create a treaty that allows extensive control over the internet and it's resources. If more an more people answer the question of "Is the internet a dangerous place that needs to be policed?" with a "yes." our freedoms with it, superficial or not, disappear in one go. It's sad that most of those who do things like this never stop to think about it. Jut use their basic logical processing to realize the bigger picture...2 points

Hmm... I am not quite sure, but I have this theory that all of the main girls have some kind of crush on our main character. I could be wrong though, the hints that are being dropped are very subtle.2 points

How do you guys read japanese visual novel?
WinterfuryZX reacted to Akimoto Masato for a topic
Either learn Japanese, like most people do, or use text warping like a pussy (just kidding) either way it goes, the only way to get the best translation is to learn it yourself edit* wow even liquid nitrogen likes this idea1 point -
People above summarized everything quite well, even looking at explanations as a linguist. Human brains is amazing thing. When you read/study/use language you automatically imprint specific patterns into your brain and don't need to translate. In fact, many people who read a foreign language (any language, not limited to Japanese) can easily understand the meaning while not being able to translate it.1 point

Goddammit internet. In my day, you had to actually walk up (20 miles in the snow, uphill both ways) to someone you wanted to assault and punch them in the face.1 point

Da Capo III up for preorder
Deniz reacted to littleshogun for a topic
I think it's okay to play directly there because I think it's charage in the first place meaning there's no heavy plot that required you to read the sequel. Although I guess it could be fun though if you knew the events in the prequel (Da Capo 2), but in the end my suggestion just continue this. About side stories, there's an option to unlock it directly although beware of spoiler though. My advice here would be just unlock the stories naturally if one want to avoid spoiler. Okay, so there's 5 stories with varied length and content. My comment here would be the first one was very important as it was the real prologue for Da Capo 3 if one treat Weather Vane as common route imo, the 2nd was a little romance with Aoi and quite long (1st and 5th side stories were longer though), 3rd and 4th was very short and just tell the stories of side characters (Tomoe and Elizabeth) respectively and most importantly reveal that Tomoe was a hardcore katana maniac XDDD. The 5th was very important to Da Capo 2 veteran because it was belated epilogue for the prequel itself set back at 12 years before Da Capo 3 event (2060, while for other timeline it was at 1950 -1951 at London and 2072 at Hatsunejima again). That's all that I could gather here again. Oh, and Suginami was quite interesting that he never change in either at 2060 or 2072, then again he is one of the biggest mystery in Da Capo universe so it's useless to questioning that.1 point -

In a case like this, that is clearly the meant to do harm, i think the punishment is applicable, but trying to punish unintentional harm(not that case) could lead to some dangerous situations. Cyber crimes are rising year by year and i see how some governments could use they as a excuse to monitor and censure the web, freedom in the internet could be dated.1 point

Fault Milestone Series
Canicheslayer reacted to Chronopolis for a topic
The author said on twitter a while back that StP would be about twice the length of the previous installments. Anyways, I love Fault's combination of stunning visuals and the world view (plus the fact that story is respectable). I'm guessing the story probably will be more involved and psychological than the other episodes, seeing as its Ritona's whole backstory. Looking forward to it.1 point -
I still just use a custom program to keep track of mats, though seeing that I needed around 800 million QP felt bad1 point

From what I've read of it so far (just got started with chapter 1) it would be most enjoyable with the previous two having been read first but so far it's done a pretty good job of setting up and explaining the way the Da Capo world works and previous events that have occured so I would say that yes, it can be read as a standalone title.1 point

Fault Milestone Series
Chronopolis reacted to Soulless Watcher for a topic
Well it seems like the next installment will be the SILENCE OF THE PEDANT which will be out in nearly half a year (sigh), June 20th. I was under the impression that it would just be a "short story", but going by the site it seems to be at least as big as the previous installments of the series. The art looks fantastic and dat tagline "DAMN YOUR LEGACY" , can't wait. Here's de link for the website. http://projectwritten.com/fault/en/stp/1 point -
