  1. Debut work by teen creators smashes crowdfunding goal in less than two hours, aims to be better than made-by-adults titles. A huge proportion of Japan’s romance video games take place in a high school setting, which ostensibly is to help them feel relatable to teen gamers and nostalgic to older fans. But even if the majority of the industry’s characters are teenagers, the people making the games, of course, are adults. But one noticeable exception is upcoming PC indie game Borderline of the Heaven. The game is being developed by Noer Works, a creative club at Tokyo’s Azabu Gakuen middle and high schools. Noer Works describes itself with: “Our members are boys who aren’t popular during puberty. We have put the romance we wanted to experience into this romance game. We want to be popular, but have no chance to do so, and we dedicate our youth to romance games.” The group seems to have plenty of talent and passion for the medium, but what they don’t have is access to traditional adult-oriented financing. So to help get Borderline of the Heaven made, they launched a crowdfunding campaign on Japanese website Campfire, hoping to raise 300,000 yen (US$2,680). They reached that goal in roughly one hour, and have been blowing past stretch goals ever since. Despite the self-introduction’s reference to “boys,” there are two female members of Noer Works, who’re shown on Borderline of the Heaven’s crowdfunding page Noer Works’ members are all fans of romance games, but they have a shared complaint about recent releases in the genre: romance games made by adults don’t feel like they really capture the emotional quality of teen romance, Noer Works asserts. “We, who are right in the midst of puberty, are best equipped to make a romance game!” the group boldly proclaims. Borderline of the Heaven is centered on protagonist Haruto, a highschooler who, because of a bad experience in the past, doesn’t like getting too close to others, except for his childhood friend Kotone and buddy Take (Take being the only male character for whom any artwork has been shown). Kotone (left) and Take (right) But after a chance encounter with his similarly withdrawn classmate Ciel outside the town church, Haruto finds a connection forming between himself and the blond, twintailed girl. Borderline of the Heaven’s crowdfunding campaign is still ongoing. Reward tiers including a physical copy of the game starting at 3,000 yen, and Noer Works says that since it’s not a for-profit group, it has set pricing on its reward tiers to align as closely as possible with production costs. Noer Works even seems to be taking the international market into consideration. Its Campfire page includes a notice, in English, that “International shipping is available. Please send us an e-mail for more information.” So if you’d like to support the project, regardless of where you are in the world, the Borderline of the Heavencrowdfunding page can be found here. official website: http://noelworks.net source: SoreNews24

  4. I'd probably have the whole fanbase of Nekopara on my door, as cats are the only possible "children" I'd have. I have to say that I thought this was an eroge, and would probably read it. "YOU are the dad of a hot chick whose boyfriend is coming over. She is your piece of heaven, your perfect breed, and since your wife died, you only have daughter-chan to live with. Now he wants to steal her?????? And, what... he is BEAUTIFUL? YOU have to deal with your feelings for your little girl AND her kareshii. Do you want it INSIDE or OUTSIDE? I mean, "him"." I took some liberties here, but yeah, it could totaly work

  5. Hey everyone! After a few months of delays, I am proud to finally release my first full-fledged visual novel. https://alonsobetancor.itch.io/so-long-summer-days (Description taken directly from website) "So long, summer days" follows Enrique "Pan" Domingo on his quest to actually do something. Through a potent mixture of laziness and a somewhat inspiring determination, he's managed to live a jobless life in a nameless suburb since before he even got married. It's worn on his wife and he's not really sure if he's tired of it either. There's something a little sad about this life. Between scrounging for cigarettes or nothing at all, you can't help but wonder if there's anything else. But these dog days will end. Thousands of them lay dead on the shore. He knows he can't linger but he has to watch. Summer can't last forever. Featuring -A valid use of a half hour -Full voice acting and an original soundtrack -Fully illustrated (and entirely hand drawn) Starring Vaughan Farrar Ashley Harrah with Julian Bane Wyatt Manieri An original score by George Buccino with samples from One True God and Xavier Cugat Art by Kelley Karlok Diego de Miguel Ally Godsil and a script by Alonso Betancor (also it's my first post here)

    Identify Umineko Song

This is the one! Thank you so much! Umineko was my first VN ever, and I planned on rereading it for a long time. I have to say that now it is way smaller than before, maybe because I still didn't have the "rhytmn" for Visual Novels then. You should at least try the first Episode, and see if you get pumped to read the others.

  7. Interesting and bold undertaking, but it takes a bit more than just passion and money to create something outstanding. Age has nothing to do with it and they probably have yet to experience it, to truly understand why people make these games. That aside, I wish them all the best.

  8. I have to admit I find the route structure of GGN now confusing as hell, due to the number of options. I've played through most of it and if someone told me that some events and the ending you get (apart from which girl you end up with) were random I wouldn't have many reasons to question that. Not that I cared enough to find out how it truly works though. In general, the game has tons of content and most of it of decent quality, but I really don't like that they didn't do anything to the structure of the game, basically forcing you to replay it over and over again to get through all the sites and events. Moving those new locations to a "second trip" with some romance continuation would be a much more elegant way to do it, but I guess it would take too much work.

  10. Play the reality Nua version of Fate NOT the android version. It is not something so simple as character routes. It's almost secondary. The Fate route does a lot of word building. It definitely isn't the best, but is something that should not be skipped. While it does deal with the relationship with saber, romance is completely secondary. UBW anime, overlooked 80% of the route. It's not good on its own, the only reason I watched it was to see my favorite characters in beautiful ufotable animation. Heaven's feel is probably the best route, at least it was my favorite. If you do plan on playing it, please do not watch the movies first. Fate was made chronologically, Fate->UBW->HF. You were not allowed to skip routes or deviate from this order. This was done for a reason. Many concepts introduced in later routes rely on understanding from previous routes. Events that happen in HF, are a lot more effective and comparisons and contrasts between the shirou of this route and the shirou of the UBW route can be made. This impacts your experience greatly. Having watched the anime, which almost feels like a string of badly executed spoilers, it will impact your experience of the first 2 routes, however enough has been overlooked or changed, that you will probably enjoy the VN regardless. And heaven's feel alone makes it worth it. Play this rather than rewrite because, rewrite+ will come out sometime next year, with better translation/additional routes and content, so wait for that. Also, the chuuni may be a nice change of pace from what you have been reading so far. (slice-of-lifey drama's) @Narcosis The sex in fate is very, very bad. The writer himself didn't want to write the sex scenes. In later games like ataraxia, some one else was hired to write them, and they were at least decent. There wasn't enough sex in fate that you could define it by the h-content though.

    What are you playing?

Played a western vn called Crimson Gray and it was pretty good. It was pretty short but I liked how twisted the girl was. The art was nice and the music was excellent so overall I think it was pretty decent.

    Identify Umineko Song

Oh, man. Umineko is such a masterpiece and I keep meaning to replay it, but it's also so long. I'm a little jealous, ahaha. At any rate, it sounds like you're talking about Daydream's End? I could be wrong, but I can't think of any other 1-4 tracks that quite fit what you're talking about.

  15. The issue with Rewrite is before that "grand" thing happens, you will die from boredom. Rewrite is Key's weakest work so far. As for F/SN, game in a nutshell: You probably need to change approach, if you want to see better stuff. That, or maybe the types of vn's you pick. Drop the popular stuff. Read the hidden gems and things people don't discuss on every single animay forum. What I can recommend right now, based on the feedback you left (no particular order): Cannonball - One of the greatest Space Opera vn's out there. Best main duo in the history of eroge and many memorable characters. Contains a ton of references to many classical sci-fi works and requires such knowledge to be fully understood and appreciated; quite a lot of sex scenes as well. Old school art style and quirks might not be to everyone's taste. Large portion of the vn relies on a racing game and choices made during that time have impact on the storyline; some people loved it, others hated. You've been warned. Along the Edge - Western vn about a young woman, trying to escape from her past. Plot changes massively along with the female protagonist - both appearance and personality-wise, based on the choices you make. Many different endings. Recommended. Dead End Junction - Wild west meets fantasy doujin vn, with a lot of travelling and adventures. Great, likeable cast of characters and engaging plot. Pray for Hizune to write a sequel. Sekien no Inganock - Fantasy steampunk with a captivating story. Magnificent world building and all round good prose, that borderlines on poetry at times. Interesting characters. Beautiful Soundtrack. Highly recommended. Shikkoku no Sharnoth - Another WAB series game by Hikaru Sakurai, as above. Might be even better than Inganock, especially if you like fictional London-based settings. One of the best female leads in history of eroge. Everlasting Summer - Also known as the russian "Katawa Shoujo". Part denpa, part russian sci-fi with heavy influences from 80's fiction. Interesting story, if you're willing to sit through the entire game. Great Soundtrack. Saya no Uta - One of the very best horror vn's, based on Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. Ending the game will leave you speechless for quite a while. Demonbane - As above - More Cthulhu mythos, only with 300% more mecha. As with Cannonball, it's an oldschool game and might not be to everyone's tastes. Al Azif is <3 Those games have far less slice of life and typically focus much more on drama, action and adventure. I could add more, but titles I have in mind contain too much SoL to be taken into consideration (you need a break, otherwise you'll burnout). I'd also advise to stay away from goddamn long games and play more shorter ones; It's more healthy that way.

  16. If so, you may try picking FSN. Imo, both of these VNs have good stories, but they take quite long to get to. If you are fine with spending 10-20 hours on pure comedy and slice-of-life to get to more story-focused parts after that, then picking Rewrite works. (Edit. You aren't, I should've read the first post more attentively.) I personally liked that comedy, but I've also seen some people saying they hated it, so it depends. FSN's SOL scenes, on the other hand, are kind of more evenly spread, but again, the first route you play, Fate, is basically SOL, interrupted from time to time by a battle scene or two. Fate route does have a good story, but it's a general opinion that FSN gets much better at UBW (or even at the second half of UBW). As for the common routes of Rewrite and Grisaia, I didn't really compare them in length, but I think they are more or less similar. On the other hand, in Rewrite it's already decided by the middle of the common route which girl you are going to end up with, and the later scenes are heavily altered depending on that, so you can say it's actually shorter. PS. Oh, I missed that you are going to skip Fate. Actually, I am not sure if I recommend to do it, since FSN is designed to be a linear experience and it's best when experienced as such, but since you already have some experience with the story, then I guess it works, probably. UBW anime, I think, adapts the story of UBW more or less faithfully, so you can try it, and if you're bored, switch to Heaven's Feel. Note however that it has much slower pacing and much less fight scenes, but it's my personal favorite of FSN routes.

  17. Probably not, your best bet is to wait on the re-translation patch at this point considering how close it is to getting completed. As a warning though from what I understand the patch will not be compatible with the English Moenovel version of the VN. Hopefully it remains this way otherwise it incentivizes people to purchase the MoeNovel version of the VN.

  20. It makes sense, but: There are better ways to check if a person bought the game or not. If it's really that they were going for, then it's still possible to buy only one DLC, apply the patch and play the game for a halved price.

The "rape out of love" part is actually something that plagues 18+ josei manga and otomege to a less extent. I once read a VN called Monochrome Heaven that had a hero that "raped the MC to show her that she's his" and she pretty much agreed with time. This is actually kinda sad, seems like she was brainwashed, but the game not even once adressed it like a problem. Needless to say, I hated this guy. One that bored me... I guess I could say Rondo Rondo from Comyu. She's just there to be the token tan girl, her H-scene comes out of nowhere and goes nowhere, she's not even a heroine and everything involving her is just plain uninteresting! And she just kept appering in two out of five routes like she's important! It seems she's just in the game to trigger a important fight in the last route, but even then I found this to be extremely dumb!

  23. I have a review copy and have been playing it for several days, though not very actively. I am still early in the common route (encountered no choices so far). Some thoughts about what I've read so far: The script contains occasional bits of sexual humor. A woman sending the protagonist a picture of her cleavage to cheer him up hasn't been altered. This is something that would have been changed in IMHHW. I don't yet know if stuff like bath scenes have been changed, if more explicit sexual talk is changed, or how the lead-ins to h-scenes and stuff are handled. The translation so far is considerably better than IMHHW. For the common route at least, it feels like a native English speaker actually touched these scripts at some point in the process. There are still occasional grammar errors and the prose is pretty sloppy. I expect a large level of inconsistency from a Moenovel game this big, so other parts of the game may be considerably worse (or better). As of now though, I'd say this translation is a little below average based on what we typically see from official releases.

  24. Good evening Ladies & Gentlemen! Today I'm bringing you something less of a classic, but a game that's once more pretty important for me personally - it was the first fully-fledged yuri VN I've read and it's still close enough to my heart that I'm using it for my backgrounds here and on Steam. Hope you'll enjoy reading about it! When it goes to future, as I've mentioned last week, there are two more reviews coming in December - of a mobile VN I find very intriguing and a mystery/romance VN I find absolutely atrocious to the point I felt like expressing my displeasure to the whole world (or at least to a couple of people willing to read my complaining). For the January though, I'm proclaiming it Western Otome Month, and I'll be bringing to you 4-5 reviews of notable free-to-play, western otome and otome-hybrid VNs, some of which are claimed to be among the best visual novels ever produced outside of Japan. I hope that even those less interested in the genre will be willing to follow me on this journey into the world of sappy romance and disturbingly beautiful bachelors. I'm pretty sure we'll discover some very interesting things there. ^^ EDIT: As all my plans for near future are already presented here, I won't be spamming with any posts next week, I hope you'll follow my blog without a reminder. --------------------------------------- One more thing, if you want to play an good western VN without paying much, Ace Academy is currently on -75% sale on Steam. It's one of the very few good OELVNs which successfully replicate the typical JP school drama formula (although here it's a college/mecha pilot school) with multiple romance routes and full voice acting.
