    hello there

hi, im noelle. surprised the username was available i lurk the vn subreddit frequently and every once in a while ended up here. i saw that there was a decent amount of activity here so i decided to join. im quite used to forums like this (used to frequent an unrelated board that also happened to be powered by Invision Community,) so im quick to learn things like board culture and expectations in posting etc. made sure to read the rules before making this thread i think ill lurk here a bit before contributing to get a feel for the culture of the site. im on the discord and its been pleasant so far. - some relevant weeb stuff about me: favorite vn is g senjou no maou, followed by wonderful everyday. favorite anime is higashi no eden, mostly cus saki is wholesome - some of my personal interests: i study economics in college, and on the side i study politics philosophy physics and psychoanalysis. thanks for reading and i hope to make cool friends here.

  2. Here is a list of VNs officially released in english, I will likely not update this list anymore after August 2021 as I don't see much of a point in it anymore with improvements to the search function of vndb. Orange text means confirmed for an official english release while yellow text means that a part has been released but not the entire VN. I have also made a list with the ones with physical release, this list is sorted the same way as this but also has info on where the titles can be bought and if it is available List of physical english releases of VNs MangaGamer (Store) Sekai Project (Homepage)/Denpasoft (Store) JAST USA (Store) NekoNyan (Store) Frontwing (Homepage) Sol Press (Store) Shiravune (Loves DRM, especially Denuvo) Visual Arts Fruitbat Factory (Store) MoeNovel (Burn in hell) Cherry Kiss Games (Homepage) Winged Cloud Degica Aksys Games (Store) XSEED Games (Store) NIS America (Store NA, Store EU) PQube Others (Japanese) Others (not japanese) Himeya Soft (Bankrupt) Hirameki International (Quit the VN market) SakuraGame/Paradise Project (Machine translated, do not buy from them)

  3. It's hard to say, to be honest, because, like I said, all of them have pretty depressive parts. For me personally, Michiru's route was the saddest, and Amane's... is more messed up type of depressive. On the other hand, Sachi's route is also pretty sad. Makina should be the least depressive if you avoid the bad ending.

  4. Wow this is tough. Everyone else seems to be linking multiple so I guess I will too; This one feels obvious to me. It was the first song in a VN that really made me really emotional, I guess it helped that I found the novel amazing too. If I were forced to pick this would be my number one. Umineko holds some true masterpieces in its musical collection in my opinion, in fact in hindsight some of my favourite songs came from the music played in that game. This one and the one for going with the other ending though were just top notch, this one in particular I feel is something that goes way beyond what you would expect a normal VN would have, but I guess it is Umineko so I it does not really qualify as a "normal" VN. This song was one of, if not the best intro song for a VN I have heard, for me it is a clear top runner among my favourites.

    Hi everyone

Hi guys, I'm Johnson here. I play English, Chinese VNs from various companies across a lot of genres (mostly love romance novels though) Started playing VN around 2 years ago when I stumbled across this review of Rewrite. Listened to the scattered flower youtube link and was fascinated by it. Told myself that I would get a copy of it and try out VNs. For whatever reasons (which I can't remember), Edelweiss turns out to be the first VN I tried. I got goosebumps and felt disgusted by the crap translation at the beginning; left a very bad impression on me and I wanted to quit the game and VNs in general. Stuck with it, though, because I didn't want to waste money, and by the time I finished Haruka's ruote (my last), I was very glad I preserved. Since then, I played stuff from a lot of companies, such as Frontwing, Key (yes, rewrite), Ensemble, Saga Planets, a bunch of Nukige,( this my fav ), a bunch of cat-based VNs, Moonstone (cherry), Alicesoft, Pulltop (mainly the crappy translated IMHHW), and Yuzusoft (my personal fav), among others. Felt like contributing back to the community recently and loitered around VNDB or around 1 month. Hope to contribute as much as I can here. Looking forward to interacting with you guys

  9. Have now added all the VNs from Mangagamer, took a long time, will start at Sekai Project tomorrow and add developers on the Mangagamer VNs.

  10. Hmm.. that makes both choices rather hard to advice. I would not say that they are depressive bad, but they are certainly neither merry nor jolly towards the end parts. I guess in comparison to Yumiko's route Sachi and Michiru's routes would be a step up on the sad scale, but both end rather happily so I guess if you are willing to overlook some emotional parts, either would be alright.

  11. Sachi all the way, best route in my opinion. To me it had both a good early-mid and end part, with the end being really emotional. I guess I liked her character as well which helped. It all kind of depends on which character you like though, if you so far during the game have not really liked Sachi's character and have found Michiru's more enjoyable then it might be best to read that route since both routes take quite a long time to read and you will spend quite a while with their specific personalities.

  13. It's not that perfect, since it also lists ongoing projects and future releases, but in your search choose English in the Language tab and Japanese in the Original Language tab.

  18. I was going through some short yuri EOLVNs that were getting amassed in my "to-read" folder lately and finally got to play Butterfly Soup, a small VN that got a weird amount of mainstream attention... And while it's not a masterpiece, I can see while people noticed it. It's a pretty simple slice-of-life story with mandatory LGBT themes, but really managed to make it all charming and fun to read and the message about the challenges of growing up felt very much universal. Plus, it had this line: I just wish sites like Kotaku would give some attention to the VN dev scene more often than once in every two years or so, there are so many better games that never get even fraction of the exposure Butterfly Soup got. :s

  19. Very terribly and poorly translated sound better to you? The translation may have been really bad at points, but it can be understood outside Ageha's route (which was not only poorly translated, it was also rewritten to remove segments. By somebody who doesn't know how to write English). Machine translation cannot be understood. As I recall, Amane's route and the twins were easier to understand than anything else on the VN. Pure machine translation it is not, but maybe it was edited from there at points? I still doubt it. I assume you simply lack experience with translations made by people who don't know English, if you think Edelweiss is nearing the bottom of the barrel. It isn't even close.

  21. The IMHHW translation was of poor quality, but not MTL. A lot of it could be understood, even. I assume it was tackled by multiple translators, and only some had no idea what English was.

Well I was going to wait until the release of Photonmelodies to read Altered Fable since the existing translation patch only covers 3 routes but yeah I guess all the Muv Luv talk here just triggered my PTSD all over again

  36. *Soon after the call was ushered, a fiery pentagram appears on the ground and the figure of the Fuwa's chief heretic materializes before Orakana Newbie* I was summoned, so I've answered to spread the Unholy Cult of OELVN! To be honest though, it's hard to recommend something on the same level as Katawa Shoujo, it most likely is the best Western VN to date - but it's also a very direct imitation of Japanese formula. Another example of a highly rated OELVN that feels like the "real thing" is Lucid9. And if you're not afraid of otome, Cinderella Phenomenon is... Well, quite phenomenal. Both are free. For something more unique, you could try CUPID (free) or Analogue: A Hate Story (cheap on Steam). Also, if you didn't play Doki Doki Literature Club, while that game turned into a meme, there's much more to it than just that. You already saw my Love Ribbon review, but I have a lot more reviews and recommendations on my blog (link in my signature). You can always check it out if you're looking for an OELVN to play - one upside of those is that many of them are free, without feeling like junky amateur games. And they don't take two months to finish. ;p

  37. A little off topic, but as awful as 4kids is, has anyone seen what Bandai did to Escaflowne? *dies* (Now that I think about, I think 4kids also did a dub of One Piece...which I have rather conveniently scrubbed from my mind...) Honestly, though, I'll all for a company that attempts to broaden the audience. Growing up in Asia, I knew a lot of 12 year old girls played VNs and otome games (myself included).

  38. As bad as 4kids are when it comes to censoring and americanizing their content, I think that their dubs are still really fun to watch, especially Pokemon. Moenovel however just should not be acknowledged or thought of pleasantly in any way whatsoever. Really this comparison is just an insult to 4kids. Even EA is still better than Moenovel.

  40. From what I've seen and from what other says, after all the people that were on Fuwa because of the torrents left, the Forums at least offered pretty steady levels of activity. The frontpage got stagnant because of the admin team having no time and main contributors giving up, but the community as whole isn't dying out yet - it might in the future, but there's not so many VN communities after all, not many places to migrate to and I'm not sure if it's that probable that everyone around here will just lose interest. I'm not sure where I would go if Fuwa wasn't there anymore - other options are few and not that appealing. When it goes to purpose, as much as I understand, Tay's vision was to turn Fuwa into a major VN news/review hub. Obviously it would always be smaller than the visual novel subreddit, but that's not the point - Reddit is just aggregating news, not producing them. Fan sites like this are important pieces of every community's life and can contribute a lot to the community. Producing news and commentary is a very different thing than cataloguing media or sharing and ranking external articles. Add to this at least some token effort of promoting VNs among western gamers and we would have just as much of a mission as any site needs - the fact there's no leadership is the real problem. Well, that's pretty obvious at this point, but it's also the most demanding thing to do. Not sure if it's doable at all in current situation, even if we try to overcome the clear limitations (Tay and Nayleen not having the ability to work on it), for example making a crowdfunding campaign and hiring someone to rebuild the site, we would still need more involvement from Tay than he's able to give at the moment. I'm afraid we're not escaping that limbo anytime soon.

  41. Personally I would recommend learning vocabulary n5 (or memrise) and then start reading Tae Kim's Guide to Japanese Grammar and as you learn the guide keep learning vocabulary until you die xD (you dont stop learning vocabulary ever) Learning grammar without knowing the vocabulary is not fun, you can do it but it's not something I would recommend. Once you know everything on tae kim's guide use http://www.imabi.net/ (or you can use "a dictonary of japanese grammar" inter and advance) I would say that once you reach the Special Expressions part in tae kim's guide you can read a simple VN without trouble (something like https://vndb.org/v5700), bear in mind that even the simplest vns out there will have some hard grammar parts, for example 120 yen is really easy but there are still some "hard" parts. Learning kanji alone is in my opinion a waste of time at first, I don't recommend it, it didnt help me but then again just because it didnt work for me doesnt mean it'd be the same for you.
    1 point
  42. I would recommend reading (to remember it better you can try taking notes, etc whilst doing so - I did, but on the other hand I found school a fun activity) Tae Kim's Guide to Japanese Grammar. Other than that, you might want to try immersion if you aren't already - for example if you use Twitter, try to read the occasional Japanese tweet you see (something like rikaisama is useful to make this easier). Just by being in weeb enough vn reading communities you can get some immersion; if someone writes something in Japanese (ok, probably broken-ish japanese, but it won't matter much at this stage) try to decipher it, etc. I'm not sure how generalizable this advice is but it's helped me get a baseline level of constant Japanese practice even though I tend to be lazy about anything more formal. There is another route I might recommend if you are a very hardcore person; you could pick up Remembering the Kanji 1 and start going through it, using spaced repetition software such as Anki to revise. The disadvantage is that this will teach you very little Japanese that is functional on its own. You will learn to associate one meaning for each of the 2136 kanji Japanese people learn in (non-uni) school, and to be able to when given this meaning write the appropriate kanji. Association the other way usually follows, if imperfectly. You might end up feeling like you just spent 3 months learning something for little gain, though this was not my experience (note that the author of RtK dvocates not spending time studying Japanese vocabulary, grammar etc before having gone through his kanji course. I'm not sure if that's the correct decision, as the structure of the information from grammar vs kanji knowledge is somewhat different.) The advantage is that a lot of my friends are horrible terrible at reading kanji, and while I'm no expert, I'm at least ok at it. There are also some fringe benefits where you can read handwritten kanji / handwritten-style fonts easier and use handwriting instead of radical kanji search when looking them up electronically (very useful if you want to transcribe manga). I may be an unusual case for other reasons than having done RtK; my long-term memory has always been good, and I am mentally weird. Do not take this as the gospel: what I've just said worked for me, but I'm not exactly a normal person. Everyone learns in their own way and if something isn't working for you try something else.

    To Heart 2 Xrated

To Heart 2 Xrated (https://vndb.org/v20) Game Description Following her graduation from middle school, Konomi Yuzuhara enters the same high school as Takaaki Kouno, her childhood friend. As the new school year begins, they meet their childhood frien Tamaki Kosaka, as well as well as many accquaintaces. Unbeknownst to the group, their encounters with each other will soon lead to many memorable adventures. Ending Guide This walkthrough covers the PC version of the game, that has a total of 9 routes (not including bad ending). There's a total of 9. 6 from the start, 2 unlockables after 1 route completed and 1 unlockable after 2 routes completed. The game has a map system that shows you where the girls (and Yuuji) are. If you want to enter a route you'll need to (basically) stalk the girl you're after. Individual Route Guide The names for places are in JAP so I had to figure out how to name them. Help with this is appreciated. Sentences in " signs are choices. Yuzuhara Konomi Kosaka Tamaki Komaki Manaka Tonami Yuma Sasamori Karin Kusakabe Yuki Lucy Maria Misora Himeyuri Sango/Himeyuri Ruri Kusugawa Sasara Bad End - Kosaka Yuuji Last Words Huge thanks to ittaku for translating this almost 100k lines beast and for the Lucy section.
